We saw it with all the post racial America talk and how many non-minority millenials aka the next generation of politicians and bosses don't see America as racist at all despite ignoring all the signs that the new Jim Crow is judicial and political. The one good thing about the recent run of media paying attention police brutality deaths is that it's been a reality check.

Every time the 'We've gotten better/we've moved past that' talk starts its less about acknowledging how we as a society has moved forward, but more about covering up the mutated forms modern institutionalized racism is now.

as you know all of the drama and protest we saw in the wake of the recent events between white cops and unarmed black dudes happened b/c the authorities at issue didn't act against the perpetrators after the community had asked for action.

Is that true? The recent spat of police brutality issues is less about the actual brutality(because there will always be asshole cops), but the shrugworthy response the police and society at large gave to the point where AS many folks rallied behind the cops because obviously in that kind of confrontation (black male, white cop) of course he had to fear from his life.

The thing is, you can't start giving pats on the back with things as fucked up as they are now.

Yes - that group does exist and needs to be addressed. But
there's also a very large group that doesn't think like that
that exists (yet subsequently gets little to no media buzz).

Definitely has been good to confront it, and it's something that
will need to be confronted 50, 100, 200 years from now. However,
you will *always* be able to find instances of racism - and I don't think
it's productive to always cherry-pick instances of racism and then placate
it all over the news like 'THIS IS HOW AMERICA IS! ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE LIKE THIS
DEEP DOWN INSIDE!" < That's akin to the GOP playbook which only covers
modern-day Islam when there's an ISIS beheading on some "this is how these Muslims
are!! See!!"

We need to balance the narrative out so that it's an accurate reflection of where
modern society really is in America. That includes giving police brutality headline
coverage for sure, but it also includes highlighting stories where progressive culture
does exist - because America ain't all SAE frat-boys singing stories of lynchings, and
we do our culture a disservice when we say it is.

that racism exists and is conscious of the history of race as a control mechanism, but doesn't accept it as a universal law or a reality that is destined to forever plague and divide society. You can't conquer race by pretending it doesn't exist. But you also can't conquer race by legitimizing it to the point where it's posited as an inextinguishable mechanism.

Mostly because a university's policies regarding charter recognition are not extended to all individual students. As individuals, they are subject to the general student code of conduct.

There are lots of things that a greek org can do to get a charter revoked, that when done by individual students results in probation. Charters have been revoked without expelling students, and Ive seen it firsthand a number of times. Underage drinking is the first one that pops in my head. Now something like hazing is usually interpreted as violence against a fellow student, and there is almost always specific language in the code of conduct regarding violence.

All that being said, im not arguing for or against any particular action against these people.

What does a person have to do these days to prove that he is racist? It's not enough to show massive disrespect to the black President. Congress and the Supreme Court get away with that every State of the Union, and they can't be called racist. Thank God Sigma Alpha Epsilon's University of Oklahoma chapter dared to go above and beyond to prove their racism. Thank God they actually sang a song. Because they pretty much could have done anything else without anybody suspending them or even complaining about racist behavior.

Think about the chant: "There will never be a n**** SAE." You think they just came up with that? You think that they just now decided, on a bus, to exclude black people? The national organization boasts about its Confederate ties. From the website:

"Of all existing national social fraternities today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only national fraternity founded in the antebellum South."
Congratulations on all your success.

SAE didn't start being racist this weekend. But if I had suggested that a fraternity chapter in Oklahoma with a Confederate founding might be racist in its admissions policies towards black people, I'd have been accused of "playing the race card." Or "race baiting." Or some other stupid term made up by white people who don't like to think about racism. SAE had to turn their racism all the way up to 11, and get it caught on camera, before achieving something approaching universal condemnation.

David Boren, president of the University of Oklahoma, said:

"All of us will redouble our efforts to create the strongest sense of family and community... We vow that we will be an example to the entire country of how to deal with this issue. There must be zero tolerance for racism everywhere in our nation."
"Redouble" suggests that there are efforts already underway that can be enhanced. I somehow doubt that. I somehow doubt that there is "zero" tolerance for racism. There's quite a lot of tolerance for racism as long as people don't make it entirely obvious.

But there is zero tolerance for the use of the N-word. So I guess that will have to do.

Oklahoma football might already be feeling effects of the racial chant that caused a fraternity to be banned from campus.
Four-star offensive line recruit Jean Delance announced Monday he was decommiting from the Sooners and reopening his recruitment.

Delance originally committed to the Sooners in November, but has seen his stock rise in recent months and several more offers from FBS programs have rolled in. Texas and Texas A&M are considered the frontrunners for the Mesquite, Texas product.

It’s no coincidence that Delance’s decommitment for “personal reasons” came a day after a video surfaced that depicted an Oklahoma fraternity participating in a racial chant. That fraternity was banned from campus on Monday amid protests, which included several football players and coach Bob Stoops.

Bob Przybylo tweeted that he spoke to Delance, who said the video played a role in the decision.

A day before the video was posted to the Internet, Delance posted a couple pictures from a trip to Oklahoma, including a shot of him, his mother and Stoops.

However, Delance noted to SoonerScoop.com that Oklahoma coaches asked if he was still committed after he expressed interest in visiting other schools. Delance said he reaffirmed his commitment to Stoops and assistants Lincoln Riley and Bill Bedenbaugh.

While the football team showed solidarity in standing up against the racist incident and the swift action by Oklahoma president David Boren to disband the fraternity was commendable, it’s clear the football program is going to have to do some major damage control to separate the university from a rogue group of students.

The org was born out of the Confederacy in a way and takes pride in the fact that they are the only national fraternity born in the antebellum south

But my freshman year at Georgia Tech i was astounded during fraternity rush at how many ppl were so willing to drop N bombs in casual conversation. I heard it in maybe 4 houses of the 8-9 i visited and im fairly confident that at the bigger and less academically inclined schools like Alabama, UGA, Clemson, Tennessee...that ratio would have been a lot worse.

Probably a little innocence as well

But i had no experience with that kind of open relaxed racism to that point. I grew up in neighborhood that was majority black with white and indian families sprinkled in, and spent k-12 in a environment that was fairly liberal even for catholic school.

I also kind of assumed that a place like Tech would be above that sort of thing. I assumed people smart enough for that would be too intelligent to be racist.

That illusion was gone before my first day of class.

Still, it could get worse. Oklahoma may not be the only source of embarrassment for the fraternity.

"Several other incidents with chapters or members have been brought to the attention of the headquarters staff and leaders, and each of those instances will be investigated for further action," SAE said.

The national chapter didn't provide details of the alleged incidents or where they are said to have taken place.

their expulsion from the school for words they used that amounted to a violation of the school's code of conduct isn't a 1st amendment violation, i think, b/c the students aren't being deprived of any right by a government actor. if the state school had jailed them for saying 'nigger' then that'd be different. if the state school had seized any of the students' property that'd be different. if the school had fined them it'd be different.

all they lost is a privilege which was granted to them upon their agreement to abide by the school's code of conduct - which i assume details the various punishments to be levied by the school for violations, up to and including expulsion. the school has found they violated that code and so the students are expelled under the agreement between the students and the school.

And I stand by what I said above - the students entered an agreement with OU to abide by the code of conduct or face expulsion among other penalties. Surely OU's attorneys are confident the school's act will withstand any court challenge. And to date I haven't heard of a suit being filed. But if it is a judge (or maybe a jury) will decide if there's been a constitutional violation here. I don't see one but I haven't researched the issue.

I was waiting for this part of it. Like I posted before about the guy on reddit who said he knew SAE guys not from OU who sung the song. Throw in people on twitter coming forward about the song. All those little stories that would just fall on deaf ears if they came out any other time are now adding to the story. Hopefully they dont just "investigate" until people forget.

"I heard the words. Unbelievable. This is not... this is not SAE," she said.

Monday evening, the Daily Oklahoman published a video of what appears to be Gilbow chanting "n***a" seven times as Trinidad James' "All Gold Everything" plays in the background.

The lyrics to the song read "Don't believe me, just watch n***a, n***a, n***a," but the word is never repeated seven times.

Vine user demi stevenson uploaded the video on Feb. 24, 2013. The University of Oklahoma student directory lists a Demi Leigh Stevenson as a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences. Emails to her school address were not returned.

Gilbow was not immediately available for comment.

On Monday, OU President David Boren decried the actions of the fraternity brothers seen in the video and announced the university had "severed" ties with the chapter. He ordered members to vacate the house. A statement from the school read, in part:

To those who have misused their free speech in such a reprehensible way, I have a message for you. You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves “Sooners.” Real Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other and take care of each other like family members.
