This serious Peanut Allergy mess was not around when I was a kid. So where did it come from?

at the first sign of trouble people avoid it forever, research has shown if you show symptoms and expose yourself slowly to more, you eventually overcome the allergy to them

In response to Reply # 0

Like 20 years ago the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended waiting until a child was like 2 or 3 to give them peanut products, among other allergenic foods like shellfish. The idea was that a more developed immune system would make them more likely to tolerate exposure.

That was a mistake and now people are being advised to get a skin test for their child and doctors are administering peanuts to borderline allergic babies. Those kids have been less likely to develop full on allergies than kids who dont get exposed at a young age. Which seems rather intuitive to me.

In response to Reply # 52

But giving him that peanut butter may have been good for him in a roundabout way

There are lots of older kids with peanut allergies that peanut butter would do MUCH worse to. Now, by having been exposed, there is some evidence that his allergy may not progress to the OH GOD GET THE EPIPEN stage.

Either way good luck...having a kid with an allergy like that seems like a constant stressor

because they make a point to give babies small amount of peanuts.

there was a study where they controlled for different factors, studied the israeli population.and found this was the issue.

and would not have given zero fucks nor had a reason to

but yea...non-exposure is generally the accepted answer especially since the new studies they've done about early peanut exposure suggests early exposure lessens chance of the allergy significantly

I was trying to understand his logic of "If I've never personally seen something, it must not exist". That was the basis for his claim that nobody had peanut allergies when he was a kid.

That's like a dog thinking it's suddenly night time because you throw a blanket over its head.

It just seems pretty obvious that the purpose of your post is to start a conversation about vaccinations. The anti-vax crowd uses that same tactic all the time- i.e. "I don't care what the science says, I know two soccer moms whose kids have autism because of vaccines". It's faulty logic, and it's fueling a growing problem of people not vaccinating their kids.

That might not be where you were going with this post, but that's how it seems. If not, my mistake.

Do you really think he was asserting "If I've never personally seen something, it must not exist"?

There is enough stuff to argue about without having to make up stuff.

What do you think is different about the peanuts that are being produced today vs. the peanuts fromantic the 70's, 80's, and early 90's?

By the time I was born my parents knew to test me and I had it too

People have told me its cause we were exposed enough to peanuts but in my bros case that's not true we're Caribbean and the one thing that is loved is peanut-nuts in general both my parents ate peanuts around my bro (it took many near deaths before they realized what was up) and me to a lesser extent

Some people say its GMO's I dunno but I will say when I lived in Europe I had no seasonal allergies and random food allergic reactions almost never happened

peanut butter makes my son break out
but a couple of times he was holding an actual peanut
(when we first moved to my dad's house there was always peanuts around. my dad loves peanutS)
and the actual peanut itself did nothing.
didn't stop me from grabbing it up and throwing it outside like a grenade
and washing my son down like he was in a radio active meltdown

some people can't even be in the same room as peanuts
inhaling peanut remnants can send some folks into anaphylactic shock

i just found it weird that the peanut itself did nothing to him
but peanut butter gives him an immediate rash
i'm glad his peanut allergy isn't more severe tho
for some its really deadly

a chipmunk. I basically ended that with small exposures here and there by sneaking them when my mom wasn't looking. She always knew that i had a walnut because I'd swell up fast as hell. After a few years of sneaking them, the swelling stopped being so severe. Now I can eat them and I get only a small reaction, not enough to stay away from them because
I love fucking walnuts.

Unfortunately, because of my reactions my mother made my youngest sister stay away from all tree nuts. Now she has all kinda nut allergies.
