I don't see the point.
But I'm so excited about this album that I'm thinking about doing something I never do.

The stuff about the number of tracks was an entirely separate idea.

at the time of pre-order. thats the only 'perk' i've seen in that regard.
other than that i don't get it either.
it could be just for the label to gauge the interest people have for it before it drops.

>RE: That cover is sick as shit..

The meaning behind imagery is fucking crazy. At this particular time in our country and with all that has been coming to light, that picture made me think of the young bros from the cover being pimped out to the penal system. That judge is the one who sells them out to the system to make his own bread. Judge got a commission on the heads he sent away.

No smashes, well 1 with "I" that grew on me as a single and seems like a no brainer first single I just kinda wish it came out a little closer to the album release tho. Its actually a step back for him as far as making albums at the level he did with GKMC. You are right, less for everyone it makes him more niche than he was before. Song construction and production wise its better than anything he has ever made, especially in the details. It just kinda feels like he over thought it and missed out on what made him so appealing to people who wouldnt normally listen to him. You can argue that was on purpose but regardless whatever the reason is, not a good choice IMO but we'll see. I love the artwork too. Digital booklet was dope to go through.

So for that I fucks wit it.

I like it a lot, but I gotta listen to it again. It's a lot to take in on first listen.

It sounds like a Flying Lotus album.

Best way to describe it is a free-jazz spoken word album. "i" fits in smoothly with the rest of the album.

Only true "hip-hop" song is "The Blacker the Berry".

I can't believe a major label put this out.

My only complaint is that it's a little too long and sprawling for it's own good. But I gotta listen to it again cause maybe that sentiment might change.

I just hope he doesn't break up with himself.

First album was groundbreaking and the follow up was on some "I'm Black as fuck" which turned off a lot of white fans.

I doubt this will turn them off as much but it's definitely an album for US

I kinda figured they did. I'd been trying since about 6 this morning when my barber text me to say that the "pre-order" had been fulfilled. I didn't pre-order but started looking to purchase it then. No haps though.

Once they (whoever) pushed the button and let it go, you can't take it back.
You're just encouraging people to go get it "illegally."

maybe they incentivize sales by modifying/enhancing the tracklist some kinda way. I'd be okay with the current tracklist plus a bunch of other stuff that was not on the inadvertent release.

that is just based off first listen. I am still listening though. I enjoy more of this jazz/funk take instead of hard hitting beats but I am a funk hippy in a way so it resonates with me. Overall, I can't break it down yet since it is still early off of first listen. My favorite track so far is These Walls.

I've heard it all before and he's not doing anything I haven't heard before lyrically or sonically

Name names and thanks in advance.

Because while I hear influences from many great artists/places/eras, I don't have any one guy in mind who's put together all those influences, filtered it through his prism to come out on the other side with an album that's a lot like this......and that goes for rap or otherwise......and I say that as a pretty thorough music-listening-aficionado for the past three decades or so.

So please, bro, let me know where you heard this shit befo.

I mean its hard to tell if someone is authentic on an album like this...so i think thats unfair. Maybe the state of race relations in the America inspired him enough to make this album, nothing wrong with that. I think he couldve done this exact concept but had songs that bumped the way they did on GKMC. This album is cool for someone who is an indie artist but he went into this album making a statement with the Control verse. J Cole made the same type of album as this and was able to still have those songs sonically or lyrically that appealed to everyone sprinkled throughout the album. This album fails to do that. You can say does this album need it? Yeah of course, when you are competing on the level he is claiming to be on top of.

But to say he should have appealed to the masses isn't really fair or necessarily necessary.

I mean, maybe he did make something that "everyone" will like. You like it, and you're part of "everyone." Same with me. Obviously "everyone" is a lot of people but of all the reaction I've seen thus far, at least 80% of people like/love it...which is probably pretty equivalent to the rate of people who liked/loved GKMC.

Why isn't it necessary? Thats what he was able to do with is last album and why it was as successful as it was. Its why an album of that nature was able to do what it did. SMH. Its very relevant especially when this is an album on a mainstream level competing with the Ye's, Hov's and Drake's. Either you know this or you realize its a dope album that cant compete with their next projects coming out...probably both.

Do you think those guys are looking at this album scared? LOL c'mon. They wiill respect the shit out of it tho. But i'll tell you nobody over there are scared of this.

"they will respect the hell out of it"

i have no clue why you're basing your expectation of his album on the Control verse. why does that have to be a barometer for an entire album? he should have just made a diss album? this seems to be what you're saying. you're also saying that he should sit around and be worried about what the next rapper is gonna do as a reaction to the album, or say about him.

finally, if you think he isn't getting at all the rappers YOU think he should be worried about then you should listen to the album again.

i mean, i don't wanna put words in your mouth, and even if i do you'll say "that's not what i meant," because you clearly can't admit when you're wrong, but you're basically saying that you're disappointed he didn't take Control and use it as a catalyst for the rest of the album - and that because he didn't he's failed to compete with these other rappers that he claims to be above (not sure if he actually claims that) or that other people put him above.

you've lost you just don't know it yet.

My point is, there's a difference with Kendrick. every rapper can go out here and claim they the best, but how many get cosigns from hip hop LEGENDS the way he does? No one

So once again, he don't NEED to claim that. It's already been out on his shoulders.

He's on a whole Different level from Drake in terms of immediacy and range. Sorry if that makes u sad

of name-checking social ills on Game Theory when The Roots actually started believing they were a conscious rap group critics always said they were on their earlier, better, non-politicized four albums?

Okay, then(c)Pimp C

At least Kendrick's invocations is thru the prism of different characters, internal monologues chronicling fighting off madness, in the vein of being an artist in the center of the creative zeitgeist taking chances all over the place rather than motivated by Quest trying to maintain a high metacritic score.

I'm over The Roots crew I grew up on and love making boring indie-art-rock half-assed albums while not being able to make concept records or address socio/political/mental/spiritual themes with anywhere near the degree of success of Kendrick Lamar so far.

according to flylo this album took shape during the yeezus tour, but it seems to be an immediate to the fall out of his billboard magazine interview
i think the soundscape is great, didn't expect the heavy jazz influence (low end theory/'reachin') but the sa-ra influence is welcomed and is very natural
i think he purposely did want any turnup shit. i mean gkmc & section 80 had bangers, but i think he wanted to make a singular statement, which could problematic to casual fans
i do feel he lokey 'hijaking' what chance is doing with the social experiment indirectly. they share the same influences so its natural, but...damn
no michael jordan/maad city on here...if you count 'blacker...'

This album was made for the people who loved those albums.

It's kind of strange that some of us are concerned about the commercial prospects of this album. If it knocks for us, who cares?

I'm one of those guys. trust me, i love lwfc, tfa & voodoo of course. i also like other shit as well. k dot had a nice balance on the 1st one to me i loved master splinter/sing for me-dyng of thirst just as much as backseat freestyle/maad city. i think he can make the hype/uptempo/'turnt' with ease, so i'm not mad at him for making a more challenging sound...i do wish he had a few more bangers, but this is a slow burn, still digesting it

i feel like he's a little bit in chance's lane with the band stuff, but you know what...fuck it... both those guys can have bands fuck it...

About Lamar alienating his fanbase or making his Electric Circus is pussy talk.

This Butterfly shit is some put-yo-nuts-on-the-table shit that sticks to its concept and convictions. But it's not just some weird just to be weird shit. The songs work for the most part. And even if you struggle to get pass the first two joints before "King Kunta" this is the type of album people always claim to want. Cool, challenging, dope music. But when they get it they complain, "Where's the hits????"lol

I dig it. A lot...."Kinstitutionized" is some exceptional stuff. "Alright" rides out...There's some serious joints on here. But more than that Lamar is showing that an artist who seemingly has the world at his feet, but still goes left when everyone wants him to go right and is willing to take chances at a time when music is no longer valued on mammoth levels.

Yeah, it won't be for everyone, but so what. I get a kick that this album exists when J. Cole and Drake are killing it. Those three artists will forever be connected. So Lamar says fuck it and goes his own way. This is a dope time to be a hip-hop fan...And that's coming from a old fucking man...

I once said that I'd be listening to this until I died. The same way my grandfather listened to old Al Green when he passed away at 89. And the way my maternal grandma still lsitened to old Bobby Blue Bland and BB King records when she passed away. With releases like these being dropped now while I'm at the tender young age of 43, I am certain of it.

i like the overall direction he went...

lots of funk and jazz influences

but alot of those "left" choices have been done before and much better

my main issue is the songs just aren't strong...

GKMC didn't have "HITS" per se...but it had STRONG fucking songs

i didn't think of the electric circus comparison and i agree it's a poor comparison...i do think this may have tried a bit too hard but it wasn't quite THAT far left...

the stories weren't there the same

the lyrics didn't have as much umph

bunch of left stylistic choices don't make it innovative

it lacked the same FRESH perspective the last 2 outings had

the delivery is becoming grating...

that being said...it's decent output...just nothing to favorite and put on repeat

Let me sport my Air Hyperbole 2010s in peace. (c) ansomble

I think that's the mistake u r making....To me this album is one LONG song....

Shit is connected much in the same as as Sly's There's A Riot....The cool part Lamar got away with it without coming off as pretentious as fuck....

But really, I understand if u just don't dig it. This album is tough to swallow on some "does it make my head bop" shit....

I really liked the album before doing so, but doing so really opened it up for me. It's both narrative and self-reflective. Poltical and personal. It's really masterful.

i blame lupe probably

had a similarly themed album sans funk and jazz heavy handed influences

but lyrically a snoozefest for me...

a few bright spots but the deilvery is getting in the way

drake's lil mixtape was equally unimpressive (WAY TOO SLOW)

this one isn't really slow just...trying too hard in predictable ways

not feeling 80% of the production

i'll be that contrary nigga but after about 2-3 listens i'll probably only hear it on shuffle

there our always detractors but i'm genuinely shocked by what seems to be pretty unanimous love for it

i dont think it's terrible at all btw

i'll wait til the hype dies down a bit bc i completely understood the love for GKMC...liked Section 80

this felt like his "I Am" but this was more cohesive with less standouts...

i can't quite put my finger on it...i'm intrigued by what people like about it though...always makes me wonder did i miss something or just didn't care about it

But I was missing most of the lyrics and especially the subtleties there within.
You can't just throw this on and expect to catch on to everything.

This ain't a collection of 'hot beats' to rock over nor would the business in spots or sparseness in others be able to be navigating as successfully by a lesser rap artist.

some folks goin' out of their way to show their disinterest or dislike of the album. that shit just reeks of lameness to me. i mean, i don't understand going out of your way to shit on something you don't like when it is something as subjective as music. i'm not talkin' about being in a discussion, like this post, and stating your opinions on the music, i'm talking about making unprompted comments/posts/ig posts *cough Mica* just to shit on something. but whatevs. i think the shit's bangin.

I'm not really a fan of those trying to say they like it while giving 100 reasons why they don't.

I can see why people don't like it though, it's not as good as GKMC but it's obvious he wasn't trying to make a GKMCII

This album sounds like he is turned off by the amount of success of GKMC and how people around him changed or said he changed. Feels like he made this album to make sure he wasn't boxed in by GKMC.

It's like De La Soul is Dead meets Buhloone Mindstate.

the thing about him to me is that no he ain't for everybody and yet he is one of those cats that is bound to have something that most will remember and he is really that dude that came from the west side
with having his feet in all directions without having to take
that bullet for the home team.

i feel his vibe and how he flows. he still ain't even close to his peak or prime and he still needs that one knock it out of the park cut, however he is one of those cats that his skills flow and vibe will always keep him a player in the game and he will only get better IMO.

But I do wonder sometimes if some of these more experimental records only work if you're in a fairly specific mind state.

I feel like there's something I'm missing or not connecting with here.

And for the record, I'm the cat that claimed that GKMC was every bit as good as Illmatic.

I feel like I need an instrumental album just to focus on this aspect of the album.

I won't comments on the lyricism, I got months to chew on that.

But the sonic landscape should knock everyone off their feet on first listen.

It's actually shocking that it would be THIS damn unorthodox. It's like he's saying "this is what I'm gonna make...I'm not concerned with catering to your needs as a listener. I'm only using the features I feel make sense, only using the beats that fit the entire sound, and I'm not forcing any more hits since 'I' got a GRAMMY (see what I did there)"

Musically, it appeals to my Jazz senses more than my Rap senses, so I get that some folks won't dig it. And unlike comments I've seen, the Jazz is nothing like Digable Planets or Low end theory....it's much more Spike Lee cut scene than anything. But hearing soooo many influences from music that I love most, all in one album...it's almost unreal. DJ Quik, Outkast, Dilla, and a strong Jazz influence all at once, without sounding forced in any way...wtf.

It's an extremely dark album, and I even wonder if that's really what he goes through, or if it's the character he's created for himself. Either way, I think it's all from the legacy of 808's and So far gone, where these modern rappers are extremely emo at a level that we rarely saw back in the 90's.

I disagree with that last sentence. 808s and So Far Gone's musical DNA is absent here, as well as the type of content Ye and Drake were exploring on those albums. This isn't Kendrick being emo, it's him being evocative. Creating emotionality that caters to the character and community he is speaking with. Outside the middle stretch of the album were the character gets depressed and fights through it, the album's content steps away from self-indulgence.

my seven cents. but otherwise I agree with you

He plays all the new shit that's coming out from the biggest to the smallest names
every weekend, and most of that shit has the same bpm, same shotgun snares, same
drum program, etc etc.
It's unorthodox within the curent scene but not unorthodox to you or I... or to the tradition
of Black music for that matter.
It can be considered "bold" for that very reason... especially when you consider folks like
Heinz who feel that he should be painting by numbers to "compete" with all the guys he
mentioned in the Control verse. Be boldly slapped such critics in the face and made
the kind of album he wanted to make, regardless of what radio would suggest he make.

Outkast musically had a huge change on that 2nd album, but their content wasn't nearly as controversial as Kendrick's is here. And, Outkast wasn't quite as big then as Kendrick is now.

182. "This is BLACK MUSIC. Look, lemme lecture some of yall..."
In response to Reply # 0

specifically those of yall who are calling this album "left".
I'm a fan of BLACK music. I love funk. I love Black American Music (what yall call Jazz).
I didn't hear anything particularly "left" until the song "u".
I mean, if yall mean "left" in comparison to what's going on currently in mainstream Hip Hop,
then ok, but this album is made in the tradition and legacy of BLACK MUSIC, through and through.

This is why I felt him in the interview with Pac when he said "I feel like all we really got
left is music". Throughout this album, Kendrick is unapologetically being his Black ass self...
keeping the legacy of BLACK music alive. Do yall really understand how much this
current music scene is an assault on the "negroidery" and traditional Black elements of music?
They only market and accept them when there's a white face on them. We've seen this movie time and time again.

But no really, DO YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND HOW THE BLACKNESS HAS ALL BUT
BEEN DELETED FROM THE CURRENT SCENE? R&B Is mostly influenced by who?
Drake, the guy who sings everything FLAT. No runs, no real sangin'. This came from US, fam.
Black music is some loops and lacks feeling and improvisation. My god, do yall REALLY
understand where we come from? Our music has ALWAYS been very important and
influential to us. The lack of Black pride in our popular music is DIRECTLY related to
the lack of respect our youth have for THEMSELVES and their lack of awareness and
this idea that we post-racial. And when I say "lack of Black pride", I don't just mean lyrically.
I also mean in terms of traditionally Black music elements! Goddamn that's so important.
It's something that can't even be explained, but for the love of god, tell me there
are some BLACK ppl here who feel that!

You didn't nod your head until "Alright"? Wtf, do you even like Black music?
Wait, nah if you bump this sonically flat soulless singing on the radio today, you probably don't.
Maybe you never liked Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy, etc?
The very first track ain't make you wanna cripwalk?
*sigh*

Mufuckas got me ready to weep for Black music.
Nah I'm lyin, I already did, but this album gave a Negus hope... or at the very least
just made me PROUD that a young Black man cares about his music lineage.
This is important whether you see how important it is or not. This is our music.
This matters.
It's the feeling in the music that can only come from our unique struggle.
Yall don't hear me tho

It's only "falling off" cause White people don't buy it.

But act like this album could be redeemed with some trap and EDM is such fucking bullshit.

considering how the last two - three years have been the years where race is once again brought to the front this album addresses the various states of frustration that have been mounting

this is a perfect response to whats happening

and

considering Kendrick's....outlook this album is right inline with the previous albums. I cant see how this is considered left field.

The jazz element? He has been on it since Section 80, see: Riggamortis

It's not like he just up and randomly took on the POV presented on this album, this is just a progression of his sound and thoughts....

Broke the record for number of streams in one day.
Taylor Swift mad as fuck.

http://www.newsweek.com/good-kid-csh-city-new-kendrick-lamar-album-rakes-over-900k-315498

Hip-hop wunderkind Kendrick Lamar unexpectedly released his second major-label album, To Pimp a Butterfly, on Spotify on Monday morning, a week ahead of its scheduled March 23 release date. By early Tuesday, Lamar had broken the record for most Spotify streams in a single day: 9.6 million times all the way through the album, according to a Spotify representative who spoke to the Los Angeles Times.

Then, on day two, Lamar broke his own record, with 9.8 million full listens for the album, reports The Fader. Previously, the record number of Spotify streams in 24 hours had been for crooner Michael Bublé’s 2011 Christmas album, reports Yahoo Tech. (Because Spotify’s subscriber base of was much smaller then, it’s unclear whether the figures would be comparable, and the streaming service chose not to disclose the Bublé album’s number.)

The next logical question is: With that many listens, what was the bottom line for Lamar? Lifestyle and culture site Hopes & Fears did the math to find out what the artist earned in Spotify royalties within the first 24 hours To Pimp a Butterfly was available online.

According to calculations based on Spotify’s formula for royalty payments, the site said Lamar raked in between $921,600 and $1,290,240 from the Spotify streams in a single day. It’s proof that artists can make serious money from Spotify, even though it has been critiqued by artists for providing paltry royalties.

Some popular artists, such as Taylor Swift, have opted to remove their catalogs from the streaming service altogether. And the funk band Vulfpeck last year went to an extreme in raking in about $20,000 in royalties and in the process tweaking Spotify: It created an entirely silent album and made a video urging fans to stream it on the service.

But given that streaming services beat out record sales for the first time in history in 2014, Spotify may be onto something.

In response to Reply # 222

With every song perhaps?

I get that its his search for identity

However as a 40 yr old with a deeply rooted POV on me and Blackness...I dont need to be explicitly told hey this is abt blackness. I can kinda read into it what I read into it because I'm into it. Again, other then naming the project Black Messiah and the first couple minutes of 1000 Deaths...D made just as big a statement... Without beating the audience into submission with the theme

But I'd rather a rapper was ambitious and trying shit rather then cookie cutter and being mentioned as a companion piece to what I think is the aoty is a good thing

does it really matter?

wonder what bin's doing?

or "preaching" Italianness when referencing Italian gangsters.
A reference of Kunta Kinte and now it's off-putting because he's "preaching" Blackness.
Cmon son.

And to your point.
Proclamation ain't preaching and hell there's not much "proclamation"
just mentions of it, because he's addressing issues related to it.
I don't see how in the world it become "preachy" to mention Blackness when you're
talking about colorism or how the industry manufactures scandal against Black artists.
No preaching about Blackness otherwise.
He makes reference to Black figures.

the first four songs are dr dre all day even though hes not responsible for the music directly

momma is now a new favorite and I am gobsmacked that KNX got a track on this

I am also convinced KNX channeled Dilla pretty hard to make that track....and I never compare KNX to dilla but this is straight up dilla

this album has reignigted my interest in hip hop....i was listening to beats, funk and other shit for the past few years pretty hard.

It's the spine for the whole album. The way he gradually reveals a new line is masterful.

I'll be chewing on this album for months.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.
