if they weren't, would you take their opinions and positions with a 'grain of salt'?

practically speaking:

parents often disapprove of their child's lifestyle (gay, interracial action, party person, artist).

some children fall in line, some don't.

is there any correlation to the success of the parent and the willingness of the child to conform into their approval?

value opinions on different things differently

would i take financial advice from my dad...maybe but would be a better look from my mom
would i take home improvement or work related advice from my mom....maybe but it holds more weight coming from my dad

both are happy well adjusted people who have a wealth of knowledge who had different paths in life

i weigh their opinions in different areas
