"Poll question: Have you all smoked weed with your parent(s)?"

Every once in a while I'd have a conversation and people would just nonchalantly say they smoked weed with their parents, and it always seemed so strange, I could never imagine doing that with my parents, then again, they're old school West Indians so that might explain it. I kinda envy y'all, I's like to smoke weed with my father, I'm sure he'd have great stories to tell.

one or two drinks. I'd like to share a J with Dad, but I'd still be needlessly nervous doing it I feel. Something seems strange about it all.

and you get a little pang of awkward and nervous energy? it's not common but it can happen as you are taking in the high?

imagine doing that with your dad.

making eye contact realizing you are both high and navigating some slight paranoia as a result.

hell no. lol

all his friends smoke...

I remember the smell of weed at age 3 or 4. Tops papers were like legos, always one or 2 packs on the table.

first time my wife met him she thought we were on another planet. I took her to cook out in Silver Springs and my dad passed her a j and said he would be offended if she didn't hit it.

Then she came to Pittsburgh for our town reunion where all the Black people "come on home" to chill and kick it with old friends and fam.

We go to smoke and she gets nervous cause older folks are walking towards us. I had to keep reminding her they were just trying to get a hit off the blunt without putting in on it.

Mom and Dad grew it in the back yard... in the burbs.

I was born in the 70's

To me at least.

But then again, if your parents and grandparents generation is okay with it, and it was a distinct feature of your youth, then do you see it as weird now? Do you think there should be inter-generational drug use in the open like that, or should each peer group ultimately smoke with themselves?

It's a small white town/village 15 miles outside Pittsburgh with a strong Black community.

Our grandparents partied together, our parents partied together and all the kids would play together so it was normal.

My grandfather and his crew sat on the bar/VFW steps with their pistols in view.

Our parents would tend bar while we played outside and watched the softball games. My uncle popped the trunk on this white softball team from Ohio who tried to run up on them with bats because my uncle had a whistle and wouldn't stop blowing it. Literally did the "ohhh, so you wanna use bats"

They never came back, we still laugh about it.

I probably had one of the best childhoods ever. Shit was like Wonder Years and Cooley High.

we grew up playing/swimming at a community center right across the street from our Black VFW that had a bar. You could get a double shot of Grey Goose for $3.75 3 or 4 years ago before they realized what was going on. Mini pitchers of Long Island for $6.

Back in the day when Coltrane, Dizzy, etc would play in Pittsburgh at the white clubs, they would come down to our spot to play late night gigs.

Every birthday our parents had was at this bar and we would all show up.

A few years ago before it closed a white friend I grew up with showed up with a friend of ours and this dude didn't even know this place existed. He was blown away when we told him it was her all our lives.

no kidneys and he is watching friends 10 years younger die off.

He told me stories like

The time he couldn't get a ride to a bar so he hopped on the back of a drunk dudes motorcycle... made it 2 blocks before they crashed.

The time he woke up next to a 400 pound beast of a woman...

The time he had alcohol withdrawal, got sent to the looney bin, they let him out and this dude signed himself back in because "they had bitches and good pills"

First time he did acid

tried crack because everyone else in the after hours spot was doing it, said the high was amazing but he loves food too much.. "and them niggas wasn't getting up to eat anytime soon"

Catdaddy is a great name for an old head, and not getting into crack because you love to eat is charmingly niggerish behaviour, I like it a lot.

Must be great to have those stories with him.

Like there's topics I'd never bring up with my parents when talking with them, and I'm really comfortable with it being that way, but I'd imagine that smoking with Dad would melt those barriers of topics, and I'd just start blathering about porn and white women or some shite.

cousin, his wife (at the time), me and pops are bout to roll out to Riverfront (This takes place in Ft. Lauderdale)
Cousin and I spark
Dad and I start joking about him playing dumb. I tell him "You look your way and I'll look mine"
My cousin passes me the blunt and my dad pulled rank on my ass
"I'm the oldest person in the car!"
WTF DAD!!!!!!!!
"BSR, you look your way and I'll look mine"

He didn't like blunts, way too harsh on his throat.

We burned while driving. We had just made it to Riverfront and put the blunt out when a squad car pulls us over.
Cop comes out
starts grilling the shit out of us
Cousin, wife and I are playing the "what did we do, mr. officer?" role...
but my dad is talking CASH SHIT in the backseat.
He almost got us all arrested that night. To this day, I still can't believe I yelled at my dad to STFU and got away with it!
He had to have been high as a kite for that to happen lmao

here for dis.

and even if it did, I'd think it was uncharacteristic for him, and become concerned for him, light-weight try to talk him out of it. I'd cop for anyone else, but I feel like maybe this is something I shouldn't be as intimate with my parents about. That seems uptight now that I see it typed out.

You know what it is? Once my father said "two people that shouldn't be your friends, that's your teachers and your parents." and I guess I took that to heart, and thought everyone else had the same worldview. Huh.

i think once everyone is an adult a real and genuine friendship can be developed. obviously there will still be some boundaries in place, as you definitely recognize. i think the statement above applies more for kids/younger people/still in school etc. but i see where you're coming from and i'm sure there are a lot of parent/child relationships that operate the way you and yours do.

they already knew I could get them the same weight at a VA price vs Western PA price.

I also brought a bag of some loud (KB back then) just to stunt on them.

They get what they get and I show them what I'm crumbling up. My aunt was like "waaaait a minute, why can't we get that?"

When I told her the price she screwed her face up. LOL...

In response to Reply # 24

she grilled me about what other substances i'd tried.

and i was mostly honest but didn't tell the whole truth.

then i asked what she'd done and she was probably only somewhat honest w/me.

it was a good talk.

i've since learned that she was mortified that i smoke cigs and she blamed herself. she didn't care so much about the other substances but the cigs were a problem for her. so since then i've tried not to smoke cigs in front of her.

i've had some drinks around her. we talked on thanksgiving last yr after i'd drank at a friend's house and i apologized for slurring b/c i'd had too much bourbon and she exclaimed 'I didn't know you drink brown liquor!' i lol'd and reminded her i'm almost 40 yrs old and i'm a lawyer - so, yeah. i drink brown liquor. lol

fuck you.

the sort of conversations they have with their coworkers and such to pass the time they never ask children. As a cat in my thirties I'd apologise profusely for slurring too, but we kinda shouldn't have to.

And yeah my mother is fascist with cigarettes. She was a nurse so maybe she saw one too many chest x-rays or something, but she used to smell it on me and chastise me. She hates it more than drinking.

Would you confess your sins in the same room as your parents? I wouldn't, that would seem too rash to me, I'd rather not hear of their scurrilous activities. How do you see it?

In response to Reply # 0

I was out visiting the family in Cali. Me, my Mom, my brother and a few of his friends had gone out to dinner and we had plans to go to a club after... I figured Mom was going to bounce after dinner.

We're back at my brother's house and I'm talking to him like "man, I wish Mom would leave so I could smoke up." My Mom knew I smoked cuz I grown and wasn't embarrassed about doing it, but I didn't feel right doing it in front of her. My brother's like "Mom knows you smoke, my pipe is in the bathroom, just go hit it."

I'm in there smoking and then my Mom walks in... and she reaches her hand out for the pipe! I'm bugging out and I tell her "There's no way in hell I'm passing the pipe to my Mom! I'm done smoking, I'm gonna put the pipe back where it was and whatever happens after that is not my doing!" So yeah, Mom hits the pipe and decides she's also going to the club with us.

Man, it was just weird. Seeing your Mom have the giggles and rolling around.... I just wasn't ready for all of that, especially since I was high myself.

I believe Marijuana is a performance enhancing substance. It relaxes active brain cells allowing you to make the best use of them when doing something creative or inventive. It allows you to streamline your focus into one thing as opposed to using a scattered brain. If I play basketball under the influence of pot, the ball turns into a string of sausages and I into a dog.

it's a delicate balance though

i don't care as much about winning and that's good in video games...

not so good in real life games bc u need a balance of that carefree creativity and killer instinct

although i did get like 6 rebounds on 1 possession once high...it was mainly bc i kept rebounding my own misses lol

one i felt a little less sharp on the court and two i liked the delayed gratification of a huge ass rip when i got done playing.

now where i go play ball there is usually an L or two going around on the sidelines and i never partake.

NBA video games, however, are a different story lol

my dad smoked a few times back in his day but not for at least 35 years and probably longer. my mom smoked once in the 70s and basically just nodded off. altered mind states are not her thing but she has some medical conditions that it would help.

i wouldnt be averse to burning with them. i have been around them while stony plenty of times, they just didnt partake.

My dad used to smoke when he was younger, I found his pipe when I was a kid.

I smoked with my mom for the 1st time after a funeral many years ago. Her cousin smoked all the time and when I saw them sneak off, I busted them and asked to get some. Cousin didn't share joints, so mom and I had to share. She was tripping at first, but got over it quickly. Even though, I've smoked with her plenty of times since then, she still brings up the first time and laughs.

Mind u, I'm early 40s and my mom is a lot more relaxed than when I was young. I rarely remember her even drinking and she lectured me about smoking for a long time.
