"Do women speak out against rape aggressively enough?"
Tue Mar-03-15 12:22 PM by PROMO

Hear me out: I know women speak out every day against rape, but I was listening to this story of this Duke basketball player who allegedly sexually assaulted two female students but they never reported it to the university or to the police, and it got me to thinking that if their stories were true what I'd do in that situation.

I felt like if I was one of those women and I was raped that not only would I be speaking out about it, but I'd be doing so in a much more adamant and aggressive tone than what I generally hear. I'd probably hold a press conference and say something along the lines of "not only did this walking piece of shit rape me, but if the justice system doesn't do something about it then I will." I just feel like we always have these stories where the women are very quiet and demure about the whole situation. I think women should be MORE outwardly angry when this happens like, "yo this shit is fucked up!!!"

Female rape victims always want men to understand their plight better, and I think that approach is something that men can understand a lot more clearly than the current way most of these situations play out. It's more visceral and that usually connects with men better.

Do you think women who came at it like that would be judged more than they already are via the "she was asking for it" type of dickheads out there? I think their clear anger and outrage would speak loudly to those people who react like that.

Ladies, please feel free to come school me. Not trying to be insensitive with this post. Rape is fucked up, and if it happened to me I'd be going HARD to right the wrong and making sure people knew what a wrong it was. This is how I'd like to think I'd react but the reality could be way different if I was in the situation.

mostly, rape victims tend to not be believed and/or they're shamed for it

this analogy isn't super great since we're in the age of cameras taping police brutality but work with me here: you can tell a person "why not speak louder about police brutality?" but what does that accomplish when they feel helpless overall?

with no numbers handy, I'd like to hope rapists are prosecuted more than foul police. but that doesn't change victims understandably being jaded and mistrustful of the world

and i also realize there's a lot of shit that is easier said than done, and maybe my hypothetical is one of those situations.

i was thinking about how much we've been talking about "rape culture" and making men more aware of their actions and thinking lately and i was thinking that a more visceral, aggressive response would connect with men more. i don't know.

thanks for an honest reply.

flash back to your life's greatest tragedy or something that still mentally unnerves you

then imagine someone coming off insensitive about said incident, would you not be up in arms?

you seem to mean well here, but this post is a recipe for disaster since actual trolls have ruined the potential for productive discussion and the dogpile folks are looking the next misunderstanding to heap on

yes, the trolls went in from "go."

i wasn't trying to trivialize anyone's experience, or to question their response. having never lived a rape, i can only speculate how i'd react. as i said, i'd like to THINK this is how i'd react, but who knows.

you know what, you're right. i see the errors of my line of thinking now. questioning how victims react to a tragedy isn't the right way of thinking. but i do still wonder if the natural, outward (to the public) reaction was violent outrage if things would be different.

thanks for the dialogue. at least THAT came from this post. this is why i come to OKP. to actually learn something, whether it's about others or myself. i'm okay being schooled if something comes from it.

Did you ever consider that your story could be true
you could even have evidence
and STILL
no one will give a shit?
This is a case out of Detroit where some rape kits sat for close to THIRTY YEARS before seeing ANY sort of processing: http://www.wxyz.com/news/100-serial-rapists-identified-after-rape-kits-from-detroit-crime-lab-are-finally-processed

How you feel/think isn't and simply can't be a measuring stick for the validity of a woman's rape claim.

>Female rape victims always want men to understand their plight
>better, and I think that approach is something that men can
>understand a lot more clearly than the current way most of
>these situations play out. It's more visceral and that usually

You're operating from a place of privilege. Why do we as women need to "connect" and appeal to men's understanding? Where is the effort on men's side to understand the micro aggressions we deal with on an everday basis, the effort to get to know and respect us simply because we are your fellow human beings?

>

>more than they already are via the "she was asking for it"
>type of dickheads out there? I think their clear anger and

Dude
We get judged for EVERYFUCKINGTHING
for being a prude
for being a slut
for being what society wants us to be
for being what WE want to be
This point is irrelevant.
>
>This is how I'd like to
>think I'd react but the reality could be way different if I
>was in the situation.

This is the most accurate statement in the OP. In summation all the points you've brought up boil back down to no one giving a shit in the first place. I don't like how you're framing your view to fit the "perfect victim" narrative. In trying to understand how rape victims feel, maybe you should ask us why we did/did not report our attacks instead of making it about you and your way of thinking.

Just my 2 cents.

here for dis.

thanks for your reply. gonna re-read your reply and think about it.

as i said, i'm not trying to be an insensitive prick (maybe i am being one though) it was just something that crossed my mind.

i imagine that victims are FURIOUS but i feel like when these cases are reported to the public i don't SEE the furor and i was wondering if seeing it would impact people more. that's all.

Plenty of dudes said the new rules would lead to false allegations.

Well, he appealed, paid ole girl off and she stfu and the case was thrown out. Was it really DV or was it a money grab?

If in a domestic violence case where you got slapped around would you take the money or move forward?

Was she wrong?

you assume that you wouldn't be afraid of the rapist.

that he hadn't threatened to harm or embarrass you if you report what happened.

you assume that you yourself are convinced that you'd been raped. b/c many rape survivors don't even have words to describe what happened. most rape ain't the stranger/danger snatched in an alley type situation. it's very often acquaintance rape. your boyfriend 'took the pussy' when you didn't want sex. or that guy you've been seeing. or your friend. or your cousin. your brother. your father. your grandfather. your neighbor. someone you know and trust. who would never do that to you. so maybe YOU got it wrong. maybe you did lead him on. maybe you shouldn't have worn __. or drank so much __. or agreed to be alone w/him. maybe it's your fault.

all of that ^ and more can go through your head and keep you quiet after you've been raped.

I'd probably hold a press conference and say
>something along the lines of "not only did this walking piece
>of shit rape me, but if the justice system doesn't do
>something about it then I will."

you assume you would be able to fight all of that ^ doubt and stand before a microphone in a room full of ppl and shout w/absolute certainty that your boyfriend/friend/date/husband/relative/et al raped you and you won't stand for it!

I just feel like we always
>have these stories where the women are very quiet and demure
>about the whole situation. I think women should be MORE
>outwardly angry when this happens like, "yo this shit is
>fucked up!!!"

oh yeah, THAT voice is there too. sometimes it's not drowned out by those others. but often it's drowned out.

>Female rape victims always want men to understand their plight
>better, and I think that approach is something that men can
>understand a lot more clearly than the current way most of
>these situations play out. It's more visceral and that usually
>connects with men better.

uh...fuck that.

if men want to connect w/female survivors better then they should try to LISTEN w/o PREJUDICE ((c) George Michael). but for real they should just STFU and listen more. stop defending. stop making it about men and make it about the survivors. STFU and listen more. create a space where women (who aren't the only rape survivors but you and this post ain't ready for THAT discussion) can feel comfortable talking. and just fucking listen. on THEIR terms.

shut.
the fuck.
up.

and listen.

>Do you think women who came at it like that would be judged
>more than they already are via the "she was asking for it"
>type of dickheads out there?

yes. i do. i think plenty men would still attack them w/the same bullshit they use now.

I think their clear anger and
>outrage would speak loudly to those people who react like
>that.

it would probably speak to some as it does now. but most would still find reasons to reject it.

>Ladies, please feel free to come school me. Not trying to be
>insensitive with this post. Rape is fucked up, and if it
>happened to me I'd be going HARD to right the wrong and making
>sure people knew what a wrong it was.

you think so but you don't really know.

This is how I'd like to
>think I'd react but the reality could be way different if I
>was in the situation.

you'd like to think.

fuck you.
