"Have you ever met a functioning and successful cocaine addict?"

I have a very successful friend who loves cocaine. He drives a fancy Mercedes, lives in a fancy condo, and is currently working towards an MBA.

I met him several years ago and he loves to party hard. He will consistently stay up from Friday night to Sunday morning drinking and huffing blow, only to get up on Monday morning and go to work. He brags about how long his lines are, sometimes spanning the length of the entire coffee table. His professional life never suffers, and he has received an invitation to study at Stanford in between 3 day cocaine binges. I just don't get it.

I have dabbled with drugs before and I know for a fact that I cannot party and go to work the next day. I need at least 24 hours to get myself to semi ok shape, and it usually takes a few more days before I start to feel normal again. How is this guy staying up for 2 to 3 days every week huffing blow and managing to do so well?

I know another individual who is a well educated Doctor and also a very high functioning cocaine addict. Doesn't sleep on weekends and manages to pull long shifts at the Hospital like it's nothing.

Are these people super human?

One dude has a little row house, a wife, a kid & a car. On paper, he's doing alright but IRL it just seems like he's slowly circling the drain. I know a few snorters too. All functional fuckups. Going nowhere fast.

Maybe if they had better coke they could be doctors too?

That doctor snorting that good stuff can afford it, so it's not really an issue. If they get fired and suddenly can't support that habit then that's when things might fall apart fast.

I've never done coke before, so I'm just guessing here.

I kine of feel like you lose a piece of yourself when you do it. You find yourself in situations you would never consider sober. You've made the right decisions.

You're probably right, affordability is key.

Ive known more then a few high functioning regular cocaine users, much of the stuff we've internalized about drug users is'War On Drugs' propaganda.

That's not to say it's not ultimately a destructive thing to put in your body and requires a good amount of effort (particularly in cash) to keep it going.

It's the same way I know more then a few high functioning gamblers...95% of the time its all good. Then suddenly its like, "Yeah, can't make the trip to Chicago we planned, bad week last week", lol

Totally. I think most of the health problems arise due to the stuff the real drug is cut with. There is a pretty good doc on YouTube called "What's in my baggie?" where a group of guys navigate music festivals and test people's drugs, only to reveal that 85% of it is always bath salts.

>That's not to say it's not ultimately a destructive thing to
>put in your body and requires a good amount of effort

He has the money and we have all tried to get him to stop but he's not listening. He started selling it as well, and I think part of that reason is so that he always has it on hand.

>It's the same way I know more then a few high functioning

Makes sense. I'm really just amazed the human body can take such a beating, for so long.

Be careful man, cocaine is one of those drugs that is super easy to do, that has a high degree of reward, but it's very short lived and you always need more. The higher you get, the easier it becomes to do things you *never* thought you would. It can really strip you off your dignity.

I've known a couple of cats who worked at places like goldman who were in love with the coco. It kind of works because if you are something like a bonds salemen than the partying, long hours are all part of the job...while you are young.

Alot of those cats burn out though. But you can make a lot of money during that period.

Some regular coke users I knew added it to their arsenal. As the younger dudes eventually replace the old fatcats I wonder if its going to change the drugs they use too.

along with all other kinds of uppers. it's especially popular with overachievers and lots of parents get their kids on it so they can do more / study more / be more productive. the amount of work you need to do to get into an ivy league school is nearly impossible for a normal person to do esp on the east coast where you'll have 100 kids in every private school with 95% percentile SATS, but schools will only select 1 or 2 per school.

i dunno, you can use reasonable doses that way but i have never met a regular user that is able to control themselves that tightly for any length of time.

plus you're not just dealing with the effects while you're on it, you've also got to deal with the emotional and physical instability of comedowns and hangovers, or if you're avoiding those by doing it constantly then you're not eating or sleeping well.

coke is more mild than the reagan administration might have you believe but it's not to be taken lightly IMO.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Well said. There is a reason they call cocaine the Devil's Candy. It has the type of high that will twist your judgement and lead you down roads you would never give any consideration to while sober. It's like putting highly energetic blinders on and rolling dice with your life while going "Weeeeeee."

The best experience I've had with cocaine was while dancing to some exceptionally good music. Everything else was lame.

to qualify for what the OP was talking about, you'd have to take it to another level.

i never really had a problem focusing to write papers and things like that but yeah i know some people who used it successfully that way. for me it was more of an experiment thing, had my fun with it and bailed. i saw plenty of pitfalls though.

i honestly dont know how he does it. cocaine swept thru my neighborhood like the plague in the late 80s early 90s. most of my homies started out as petty dealers and because of the access eventually became addicts...started lacing blunts etc.

two of them turned lemons to lemonade and kicked thru several stints of jail and rehab and eventually became substance abuse councelors. i fucked around with caine alil bit here and there over the years but it aint for me like that...i just dont like the feeling that comes the next day so that kept me from really getting into it like that. but my dude been gettin it in on a regular basis for a LONG time

Maybe only 2-3 I would truly consider "addicts." But I'd estimate that 80% of my friends get down with the white under various circumstances, whether frequently (several times a month) or semi-frequently (few/several times a year). All of them are high-functioning, hard working, successful people.

I'm not necessarily condoning it but my mantra has long been to do what you want with your years. So long as you're self-sustaining/not draining the life out of someone else to support your chosen lifestyle, I won't judge. This is "within reason," of course. In other words, I will never, ever tell someone "go for it!" if they present to me that they're considering shooting heroin, or something. But cocaine, in my experience, has a worse rap than it rightfully deserves by and large.

1) It doesn't last if their habit lasts. Eventually it catches up with them in terms of their organization, emotional behavior, finances or all three.

2) Even while it's going on, they could being do even better if it weren't for blow. Doing blow here and there is one thing, but if you're doing it all the time there is no way around its physiological and psychological effects.

You can get a bump (no pun intended) in energy or creativity but again it doesn't last. All drugs and blow especially have that kind of diminishing marginal return quality.

Your friend sounds fairly young, give him some time, his shit will be fucked up.

Cocaine produces euphoria, does adderall?

Reading about it on Erowid right now.

I've never known any black people who used cocaine (not crack), period.

but knowing white people who do it was mind blowing at first, then suddenly "oh I guess that's just how it is"

i know another guy who is a former meth user. he's a lawyer and fairly successful - he runs his own law firm, even.

but the guy i talked about originally works on a tv show and has a second gig working retail at a high end boutique. he smokes everyday.

and i know another guy who works as an admin at a nursing home - he too smokes meth daily.

all 3 of these guys are well put together and show no obvious signs of meth addiction.

of course i also know ppl who've ended up lost and turned out on meth. i dunno which set of folks are the exception.

fuck you.

their drug usage was the worst kept secret since everybody knew.

their "success" was due in part to being connected enough to still be employed when a black or brown person doing the same thing woulda been fired...

sometimes that connection was deep and other times they didn't have any influence beyond being white but it worked...

It seems more underground though then our paler brethren, like you said it's basically everywhere.

Ive been around some artsy boho parties where people are doing drugs and even then they keep it on the extra DL (outside of the pounds of weed smoke)

It is the asinine drug of choice for the YOLO-Millennial-chronicallyunderemployed generation, at least here in Atlanta. It is crazy how big it is now and how bold/forthright people are with their use.

Clubs facilitate and make use of drugs easier by providing grooved mirrors in bathrooms, etc. I've been to a few events where people were doing it casually on the dance floor, not even bothering to go to the bathroom. Movies continue to hype it up and make it "ok" as well.

eventually, "every party has to stop" and that lifestyle catches up in some major ways either financially, professionally or in health. Pretty much every functioning coke head that I've known eventually has let the party get out of control and they crash out. In a way, it may actually be better than the people that slowly burn along as low-level alcoholics.

Recently, they've been conducting a test to see if it's true that dogs take after their owners. They take 3 dogs from 3 different people with completely different lifestyles. The first dog comes from a doctor. They put the dog in the room with a pile of loose bones. The dog makes a skeleton out of the bones, "oh his owner must be a doctor!" the people say. The second dog comes from an architect. They put the dog in the room with the pile of loose bones and it builds a structure out of them. "oh his owner must be an architect!" shout the people. Last, they take a dog from a chef. They put the dog in the room with the pile of bones. First it grinds up the bones into dust, snorts them, fucks the other 2 dogs in the ass and says "can i go home early?"
