"Bottle service table minimums are for peasants."

"Bottle service table minimums are for peasants."

That's the sign that a bottle service girl held high in the sky at this club called Penthouse in Hollywood that I went to on Thursday. My boy DJ'd and got us in...but it was a typical high end spot. I asked them what the table minimum was...to be way in the back where you have no view of the dance floor or the DJ, minimum is $350, but it's $1,500 in the main room.

Then, I came across this article here: THE SECRET LIVES OF L.A.’S BOTTLE-SERVICE GIRLS - http://firstwefeast.com/drink/secret-lives-of-los-angeles-bottle-service-girls/?utm_campaign=complexmag+socialflow+02+2015&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social

“We make what lawyers make—we just work less hours" - says one of the girls.

I know a few girls who do it, and don't really have a positive or negative opinion on them because I've seen both sides of it. But it's an interesting read. I think this whole bottles culture is getting way out of control though.

I get it in many cases...most newer/trendy clubs don't give you ANYWHERE to sit unless you're buying a bottle, and I know women hate having to stand in heels all night. Also, a good way to celebrate a birthday, Wedding, promotion, etc etc.

But they're really using 80% of the space for tables, so there's no dance floor. It used to be more exclusive, something that you stood out for having...now, you almost need bottles just to enter these clubs, and you only stand out when you spend the $20,000 to get Jesus and Whitney Houston to come down and bring you those ten Ace of Spades bottles.

as far as your statement. I worked at a bar that sometimes had as few as 30 customers a night, and we didn't do anything flair-wise, we had 15 great cocktails but our main sell was Tecate for $2 + a shot of Old Overholt whiskey for $3. My take home for a year's worth of work between hourly and tips was $40,000.

So I can TOTALLY see that being stretched across vastly different incomes, in vastly different populations, adding up to six figures.

Have I met a bartender that hadn't at best gotten their shit together and learned how to plan for ONE BIG THING every year while living a decent life? No, but again, I'm talking about Nebraska bartenders. If you're at some frequented Vanderpump Rules spot or something in the middle of a significantly larger money typhoon, I can see how the money piles up. FAST.

unless it's somebody's birthday or bachelor's eve, you won't catch me at club with bottle service as a main draw. also because i don't really drink, i hate chipping in for shit like that.

have you ever been at a bottle table at a really empty club?
the music sounds too loud and echoey cause there's no bodies to absorb it.
and all the bottle girls look depressed and reek of desperation.
their forced smiles looking so painful to wear
and all that polyester suddenly looks very polyester.
and you start to notice some of these bottle girls don't look so good without the distraction

sometimes the dirty underbelly of clubbing is too raw for me to take in...lol
it's fascinating though

ps i see "poor" people in the VIP section all the time. that's a misconception...lol

to preface my comment, lemme just say that i buy my scotch from the likka sto for $27 for a fif if i'm drinking JW Black and $44 if i'm drinking Glenlevit. And that's with tax.

so the concept of spending $250 for a bottle of likka that i can buy for less than $50 escapes me...

UNTIL

you think about the fact that spots that got bottle service offer limited seating...which means NO FUCKING SEATING.

so the only way you can sit down the entire night is if you got bottle service at a table.

then you gotta think about what you and your crew are gonna spend buying drinks that night.

i'll use me and mine as an example. most of my guys drink that clear. so they're ordering vodka and tequila. the rest of us drink dark so we need cognac & scotch and rum every once & awhile.

to spend all night buying drinks to get nice...that's gonna cost. you better off buying the entire bottle at the inflated rate to get the same effect.

and then you gotta consider the impact on those that are really about that life.

on some hood shit...buying a bottle gives you INSTANT ACCESS TO *CHOICE ASS IN THE CLUB THAT NIGHT...

*choice mean she bad as hell but once you get past the bad body & pretty face you realize she got more prollems than the hotness is worth...

not once ever.
i don't go to the club often but when i do its not to sit down.
for clubs to eliminate dance floor space for seating
it's a simple business move
playing on people's need to feel like they doing something exclusive
even if everybody in the room is doing the same
so where it was once a VIP thing
they're turning it into THE thing and trying to shame people
into joining in on this corny ass thing.

I have a MUCH better time going to clubs with a dance floor. I prefer to get my boogie on in the club - and I'm good at it so I tend to meet ppl when I dance.

And your math just doesn't add up - I drink vodka and so do my ppl and buying a bottle costs us more than buying our own drinks. Bottles != beer pitchers - the mark up is flat out ridic. Buying bottles is not about economy - it's the opposite.

fuck you.

if you're in LA or Manhattan trying compete with white trust fund kids spending someone elses money...good luck
there are plenty of spots where bottle service is $200-500 per and it's "worth" it
i think it's a case by case situation
some of my best club experiences involve VIP/bottle service and i never spent more than $80 toward it
i posted about it before but you can also just ask for ppl's bottles sometimes and get them for free. i did it before in DC

even the spot I did Saturday, $250 for one bottle, maybe $450 for two, and you get ten people in for that $450. And you can basically have your own small room if you would like.

But...spots like Greystone out here, we went six deep, and the table minimum was $2,000, meaning each person is putting in a good $400 mafuckin dollars. My boys covered most of it, but I still put in $250. And when the club ended a hour and five minutes early because it was over capacity and the fire marshall shut us down? And we still had like TOO MUCH liquor left to even give away? AND they wouldn't even let us take a piss? Completely left a bad taste in my mouth.

mainly because the guys we rolled with wanted to be able to sit and chill (because I don't mind dancing), but a table there was like $1000 or $2000 and with 5 or 6 people, it wasn't bad (Though we never paid but I would), and it included two bottles plus soda and juice (unlimited). It evens out, so I get it, you're paying for a service also.

and you know those half empty bottles they probably just put back and used to make mixed drinks later. LOL.

about why shit like bottle service amongst other shit killed night life club culture.

I watch mid 70 disco, late 70s / early 80s hip hop and punk, studio 54 shit, NY and LA footage of clubs in the early 90s and be envious as shit.

modern club culture just seems like one endless waterdown version of early aughts rap videos.

great vibes, great dj's from around the world, dope women, weed, liq, no dumb ass dress code, shit cracks until 5 / 6 am, (though cops have been cracking down in the last year or so)

I wouldn't do bottle service even if I had the bread. Just seems so empty and boring.

Shit just seems way too funnystyle for me. Then again, I've never been to a white party either, I don't go to spots with dress codes, I barely even drink, and I just don't like that goofy fake shit.

Bottle service seems way too shiny suit bad boy for me.

I've had good nights but all the nights out that've been my faves were at dance clubs, loft parties, and raves in abandoned warehouses. and typically i was wearing jeans, a tshirt and some athletic shoes. on a great night i leave the joint having sweat through all of my clothes and with my feet, legs and back a bit sore/worn out from all of the dancing. it has not ever been about (*insert celeb/athlete*) being there. it has not ever been about how cute the venue looks. it has not ever been about how much $ i spent on drinks or food or my outfit. it has always been about the music being so hot i couldn't stop dancing and about at least a few of the dudes being so fine i couldn't stop flirting.

all of my greatest nights out have been that way. none happened in a joint that offered bottle service. none happened when i was posted up w/my folks at some table lounging on a couch getting up every now and then to do a 2-step b/c my jam is on. that shit is cute but not what i'm about when i go out to get my thang on.

fuck you.

once the bottle comes over it feels like the pressure is on them to stay cool at all times.

without it they let loose and we have a blast.

You go ahead and pay $250 for that $25 bottle of Vodka, lol.

it was either they were chillin in the cut
or they were A lister ala Prince
still chilling in the cut
or they were down and dirty with the rest of us
and those nights were awesome
or they were performing

Even smaller lounges and bars do, so it's almost impossible for this to happen in this era. There are still a few after hour or warehouse type spots that can be fun, but even some of those offer bottles.

If you can afford high end bottle service and you 'bout that life', you really should do it. It's instant access to all the shallow shit people love about luxury clubs:

- women (I didn't believe it before I saw it, but yes, women will LITERALLY give you whatever if you have high end bottle service)

- attention
- great service
- no hassles
- no crowds

But again, it's only worth it if you want ^^^ the above ^^^ If you like me and just wanna go dance and have it a good time?

It's a total waste of money

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

you had to buy a bottle of champagne and drink it BEFORE entering the club.

He didn't even touch it... was like "whatever"

Then you have Will.i.am. aka Mr. "No the fuck I ain't buying a bottle at 1000% mark up"

That dude will say "drinks on me" and close his tab after you order 2 drinks. He loves his money...lol.

While everyone else is partying he is breaking down the science behind bottle service and how that money cold be used to fund a new app or some funny looking clothing line.

For NYC, guess where! (although ive been hearing about some beneath the radar stuff in queens).

Output doesn’t fuck around, you aren’t even allowed to take selfies. Id crown it the current king based on pure space and the fact it’s got a rooftop.

Verboden has a solid space, the booking needs to be a bit better (seems they love their 90’s electronic music acts a bit too much).

On mid sized spaces:

Baby’s All Right seems to have a good balance of indie rock acts and genuine dance nights. OKp is throwing a party there in a few weeks, lol

Cameo was killing it with their lineups for a minute. Doing a quick look at their calendar now though, not so impressed, lol

The ‘It’ dance club was Bossa Nova Civic Club in Bushwick, but I have heard rumbles it might be no more…

But as far as pure bang for the buck goes? The cockroach of NYC clubs, Webster Hall, has ‘House Party’ on Thursdays which is by a very very large margin the best hip-hop party in NYC; just blaze and funkmaster flex? It’s a wrap.

Thats not to say NYC nightlife is still thriving. I went to a panel late 2013 that involved a bunch of the current hot crop of NYC club owners that I thought would drop some funny ancedotes and advice on opening your own space. It was more like a funeral, and since then two of the guys involved (glasslands, 285 kent) got their places shut down when fucking VICE took over their warehouses to build their new global headquarters, lol. Here's the link to the video feed.

86. "L.A. actually has plenty of alternate scenes, but they're best when"
In response to Reply # 56

they're kept "secret" for the most part.

It's a tricky ass city. The thing that makes it totally opposite from Atlanta, NY, and DC, especially for Black folks, is that almost all Black folks who go out here are familiar with damn near everything. So if it's the most bougie Hollywood shit, the hood still knows about it and tries to go. While in ATL, you have that bougie spot, and the hood doesn't even consider it or know anything about it. And also, ATL/NY/DC have spots that are like truly Black professional. Happy Hour type events and all, and L.A. only has a few of these...and they're usually for the 40+ crowd more so than 21-35.

But there are a lot of alternate parties, clubs, etc....I mentioned them above. Kiss & Grind is typically OKP's favorite, but it's not consistent. Grits & Biscuits is only twice a year, and has TOO MUCH hype now, but it's dope. School Daze is twice a year as well, but more dressy and I play hella Regional music along with new hits.

Zanzibar has been going on forever. Cherry Poppin Wednesdays at The Room, Re-Lax Saturdays at Melody Bar, The Dime, The Association, a few spots in Echo Park, Motown Mondays, and a good amount of other spots do cater to a whole different demographic that doesn't even attempt to hit these faux high roller Hollywood spots.

one of the tables upstairs, I don't know what that included. I went a few weeks later with some of my friends (one who plays for the NFL) and they got a table downstairs near the back. Man listen I looked at the menu for drinks and they were charging $500 for a regular bottle of Circo. My boy balled out but still...I can't imagine spending $20K in a club on some drinks and a table.

20K just to chill with some drinks
does it come with food at least????

i don't even think i'd do that shit if i were rich.

and I get it to why they charge so much but no way you making $500 off a $40 bottle of Ciroq. At the most you might make $250 (I randomly bartend parties, and if I break down a bottle, that's the average with $10 drinks). You can't make 50 drinks out of a small ass Ciroq. You can't really make 20. They are doing the MOST.

and to be honest, you get the luxury of not standing around, or being able to dance in your own private area without the hounds on you. like i said, i get it...but when i say my boy's bill (the NFL one), his bill at Cameo was less than half at Liv. and i feel like at Cameo we had way more drinks. so its' like...some places are just ridiculous.

I had a friend who a 100K publishing deal. Nigga lives in LA and was flat broke 6 months later. I asked what they spent the money on and it was strip clubs, bottles and drugs.

then the tax man came and snatched 40K from his bank account after he kinda sorta was back on his feet.

I keep telling a them to please set some aside but who the hell am I to tell them what to do with their money? LOL...

he owns real estate, has two homes he owns (not mansions but regular nice sized houses), has a foundation, really good with managing money even before he went to the NFL. He does NOT normally do these things, but it was a party weekend and the end of the NFL season so it was like "why not!"

basically they blew their bonus checks partying that weekend and I can't say I wouldn't do the same...a lot of us get an extra bonus and splurge, the only difference is our bonus checks be like $4K or so and their's are like $50K.

but yeah...I have seen rappers and ball players do this and months later have nothing to show for it. Get that signing bonus and wild out!

How much are promoters paying to bring in Delishish from Flavor of Love to sit in vip for 30 minutes?

I'm assuming there is a return on their investment since I see facebook promo for it everyday.
But does that really increase attendance. It's so hard to wrap my mind around the idea of going to a club because some pseudo celeb may be in the building

I've questioned it for sure, but...to me, it works more so because it's a guaranteed group of folks who come with them, more so than people actually coming to see them.

I did a spot that Draya hosted in 2012 called Rolling Stone, and even with her millions of IG/Twitter followers and plenty of RT's, the club didn't have any special demand that night. Girls don't really care to go to a club and see a model, and guys feel like they aren't gonna be able to pull them since they're just posted in VIP looking bougie. And man, she came in fucking sweatpants and a hoodie for 30 minutes!!!! So underwhelming.

No, there's no bottle guys.

But I'd say 5% of bottles are sold to women, most of the time for a bachelorette party, birthday, or promotion. I know a good number of women who buy them, but they're not spending $2,000 to get a table like guys will. It might just be $500 for two bottles, split between ten girls, which is decent.

Now, I'll say that what makes it way different is that you'll RARELY see any guys at their table when this happens. Guys are extremely intimidated by women who get bottles, and if we don't know them, it's almost no way we're walking up, because the ONLY thing we can even do to "match" what they have is to buy them another bottle.

Alot of times for free or next to nothing cause we know the owner of the spot, or we know the promoter or we are the promoter.

Now I'm no expert but I have done it enough times to know bottle service is great if you follow these rules.

-Invite attractive girls that you know to come hang out that night. Even if they don't want you, other attractive ladies will see you are surrounded by lookers and take note.

-sneak in your own alcohol. How you say? give it to one of those attractive ladies to hide on her body or purse. If you are at a club and they are searcing the women you are about to get shot.

-Vodka. Always pick vodka. Not only is it the cheapest but the bottles are usually bigger. You can mix more stuff with it. Tequila is always the next choice. Gin works but your hangover will monstrous. Stay away from the brown.

-always jump on the couch and dance. dont just sit there and look boring.

I totally understand the utility and aspirational allure of bottle service, but a good manager wouldn't allow other patrons to be embarrassed for the enjoyment of others...no matter how many. That shit is the height of classlessness.

Streets won't let me chill.

It was completely classless and insulting, yet the type of posers who go to these spots either take no offense, or let it affect them by saying "yeah, we can't just buy one bottle here." And basically 80% of the patrons were at a table.

I will say though it seems in clubs in other cities that try to capture that Greystone like aesthetic with nothing but racially ambiguous chicks and extreme price gouging for guys, they eventually end up abandoning that model or going under completely.

Streets won't let me chill.

I did two spots this past weekend, and the Friday one charged $400 per bottle, and $20 entry even at 10PM. They're all going for the same demographic...they had some fine little bottle girls there too, but the spot would work better as a cool lounge than trying to compete with the high end spots.

on the low end cause I had the tables furthest away from VIP because-

#1: I was black working in a mostly white club
#2: I had a full-time job too and I liked to leave by 3am on the weekdays... typically those girls don't get off work until 5/6am

I can imagine girls in LA make a lot more than I did.

But my table minimum was $500 and that automatically included a 20% tip. So I made $100 before I even started ringing shit in. It was rare that anyone just *met* their table minimum cause our job was to keep them drinking. Get them buying us shots and more champagne and shit. Most of the girls that worked until 6am were going home slayed and drunk as shit. Trying to cash out and count money but can't even walk a straight line.

I used to just put all my cash in my glove compartment at the end of each shift and Monday morning I'd open my glove compartment and $1500-$2000 would fall out and I'd go deposit it in the bank.

I ended up getting fired from that job because I was told I didn't flirt enough and my demands to leave by 3am were ridiculous.

I made good money but I was glad to leave. Cause you basically had to whore yourself out if you worked VIP. Those girls were expected to be able to have regulars that would come and buy tables just because they asked them to. And the hours were HARD.. yeah, you only worked 4-5 days a week but you worked from 4pm to 5am... that's still 12 hours and overnight all while wearing 4-5 inch heels. And we had makeup and wardrobe check before our shift... like our manager would come and make sure we had on enough makeup and enough cleavage and were showing enough leg. And you're basically drinking the entire time.

And there's really no longevity in being a bottle girl. You age out of it. Just save up money while you can, pay down some debt and get out before you become the VIP girls who are hoes for a bottle of Patron.
