"are you actively boycotting any businesses in your community?"
Mon Mar-02-15 02:55 PM by Deadzombie

because you feel like you've been wronged by the business, personally?

i realized recently how weak my boycotts are. i never really stay away. and will go back in the name of convenience.

i have friends who will refuse to patronize a corner/liquor/convenience store directly across the street from their home, because of incidents that happened years ago. i respect their ability to stay strong in their convictions. but the shit sometimes seems so impractical.

usually the incidents are something like this:

at a convenience store, approaching the counter with a (white) customer ahead of you. the white customer gets his groceries bagged up by the clerk. no mention of a bag fee or anything.

you approach the counter, and the clerk doesn't offer you a bag at all. and when you inquire about 'can i get a bag' he huffs about the 5 cent charge.

you explain that you just witnessed another customer get a bag for free. the clerk responds with a stern 'five cent!'.

you tell the clerk 'fuck you, im never coming in this hell-hole again', and then leave.

do you stay away? if so for how long?

OR

a new trendy restaurant just opened up across the street (yes, this is gentrification). the second day it's opened, you walk in with a white tee, jeans and new balance. you head to the bar and sit down.

a few moments later you get tapped on the shoulder and are asked to leave - the reason 'dress code'. you look around and see other (white) patrons wearing tee shirts and jeans and then exclaim 'but that guy ...'. the owner isn't hearing it, and asks you to leave.

do you go back dressed 'appropriately' or do you stay away from the new nice restaurant that opened up right across the street from you?

Broad put my change on the counter at this one vegan spot. That was the last straw. The other people that work there had previously given me weird attitudes for no reason. Haven't been back. Sucks, because it's the only vegan pizza spot I can think of.

There are a few other places I don't patronize because of employee attitude.

Hipsters have no culture other than jacking other people's culture.

Plus, the change was in bills & coins. No hand contact necessary to pass that off. She had to go past my outstretched arm in order to put the change on the counter.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/luannes-wild-ginger-all-asian-vegan-brooklyn

I used to go to this place all the time (mostly carry out), so one summer afternoon I took my vegan Dad to lunch at the place. The service was awful that day, there might have been one other table seated, but the waitress decided to seat us at a table which was being leaked on from an AC unit above the table. Homegirl got pissed that we moved ourselves to an adjacent table. Service was extra slow and partially incorrect. When the food finally arrived, the entrees seemed a bit off, confirmed on the way home by my Dad's apparent food poisoning. Anyway, after the bill came I paid in cash, since they weren't accepting cards, with my tip being $1.50 shy of 20% (which is what I normally tip standardly). As we left, the waitress insisted that the 20% gratuity was required and insisted I pay the remaining gratuity. I was about to refuse, but Pop reached in his pocket and took care of it.

So now I boycott the place.

& reading their very good Yelp reviews while writing this,
I was thinking I might be overreacting, until I saw this review from another black man...

Went to House of Vegetarian in Chinatown instead. Delicious food, takeout, ant the ladies that work there were friendly and joking with me when I went to pick it up. Wild Ginger was actually on my list of places to check out, but I just never got over there.

You have me side-eyeing that place now.

In response to Reply # 0

I only boycott if it's not too inconvenient. I have no conviction over things like this.

The easiest boycotts for me are places like beauty supply stores. There's one on almost every corner so it's not that difficult.

The only place I actively stay away from is this tattoo parlor. They pierced my ear wrong and I had to get it done again. Then I went again for something else and I thought I lost my wallet there and asked if I could leave my number in case it pops up and I got so much attitude like getting my number was just too much work for them. I thought that was weird. So when I got my nose pierced I just went to the tattoo shop walking distance away from my house.

Oh and there is this upscale deli/grocery store near me and one time I wanted to buy some ice cream and one pint was $10 so I just boycott that place now off of principle.

sometimes i think the business might not even notice my little 'boycott', so what point am i really making.

i tried to convince my buddy to go back to the convenience store and explain the way he felt, and why.

i suspected that the clerk/owner doesn't even know what they did resulted in a lost customer. isn't that important?

Indian lady that owns the place was mean as hell to me for about a year. I hated going in there, but it's only a block away and the only store within a mile or so.

Thought it was a lost cause, but suddenly after a year she started being nice to me. Now, it's actually cool to shop in there.

First their gas is always higher then every other gas station in the neighborhood, and I think their pumps are rigged, plus their receipt printers never work. Secondly, they are shady as fuck, dude tried to charge me double for a Sunday paper on Monday and he wasn't joking. Then one time when we had one of these southern snow storms they had signs all over that they were only accepting cash cause their debit system was down, but there had been no outages in the area and everybody else's shit was working. I'm cool on them even though it's two seconds from my house.

Too many bad reviews, and I'm not going. Conversely, I've found some dope places through Yelp also. A few honest reviews (with details) goes a long way.

I had a coupon for some special deal. I called in, made the order and told them I had the coupon. When I picked it up, she told me I couldn't have that deal because it was "the old coupon". The coupon was from that year and had no expiration date on it, but she refused to honor it.

prepared food by-the-pound lunch time places.

they have a special; after 3:30pm all the food is half-off.

i walk in at 3:13 and see that all the food is not fresh at all. i still bought a plate and approached the counter thinking they about to let me slide today. i know it's not 3:30 yet, and i also think i remember getting the same deal at around a little before three thirty.

but that memory is fuzzy.

but today, i'm still convinced im gonna get a hook up.

she doesn't budge - she claims its policy and all that, and im standing in front of her - incredulously. i couldn't believe she didn't want to hook it up.

so i adamantly stand at the counter like, fine - i'll wait this shit out, and she's gonna see how ridiculous this whole time thing is. especially. off of like 10 minutes at this point.

bla bla bla. i call the manager out, lay my case out for him. he looks at me like me like nah - you not getting the hook up. we go back and forth for a while. i try to explain to him that at this point the food is old and thus trash, you might as well be thanking me or wanting to buy it.

he still didn't budge. i slam the food and storm out.

...

i went back the next day. did a lap around the hot bar and didn't buy anything. but i would've - if it looked good.

in an atlanta suburb/OTP, because the bitch at the counter called me out the SECOND i walked in the place, and told me "i couldn't throw away outside trash in their trash can", simply because i threw one small mcdonalds cup in their trash can. i said OK and turned around and walked right the fuck back out.

they are right next to my hair salon and i really want to try them out, but i will never never eat there. i know it's folly to expect good service in a jamaican place, but STILL

LOL it's funny because it's true.

I went to my favorite spot a few weeks ago around 9:30. Homegirl told me we don't have food. WE DON'T HAVE FOOD! When I asked why she said "we are trying to go home. What you want?" I told her jerk chicken and she said oh ok. Fixed it right up. SMH

1 - they make sure that you have a receipt for the shit you bought (and didn't just sneak out) and

2 - they mark the receipt because I guess there's some kinda return hustle that I'm not up on.

The walmarts do it around here. I used to give security major shit about it until I realized that it isn't their call.

they only got me to go back in there by mailing me a $25 gift card

AND

fashion cleaners in omaha, they lost the armpit guards to this dress

and they're stupid expensive like $14 a dress and my korean dry cleaner does $7

because they are some dishonest fucks.

Long story short over a year ago
I went in to buy some coffee for myself while waiting for my mom's boyfriend and his uncle, they were helping me pick up a table I bought off craigslist. I called them while I was in there to ask if they wanted anything. Without even thinking I put my phone down, paid for the coffees and dipped out without my phone.

I walk to the corner, meet them and I go to call the woman I was buying the table from when I realize I don't have my phone. I go right back to the DD and I ask if anyone's seen a grey Samsung Galaxy 3.
Nope, no one saw shit.
I'm freaking out when my mom's boyfriend walks in and calls my phone since I told him that I had the ringer on loud.

Tell me why that shit started running loud as fuck in their prep area?

The looks on their faces switched from regular to OH SHIT SHE GOT US.
I cursed them the entire fuck out as they retrieved my phone from the back. I have not set foot in there since that incident and I make it a point to tell anyone I see walking in that they're dishonest pieces of shit.

here for dis.

they were all up in the news. we've had one for a few years now so decided to never go there even if i had to. broke that last week, what a weird place. not going back. they too open with their religion for my taste, all kinds of crosses and bible quote mirrors.keep it in the closet.

Same with Chik Fil A, never been to one, after seeing them up in the news and them white folks singing god bless america to scare the gays away i realized that aint my kind of joint.\

same as someone posted above, i avoid BP if i can after that oil spill.

also, as a pet owner i boycott pet stores where i see their animals aint being treated right. (i see you petsmart)

You better learn to separate your morals from your chicken consumption.
They could be at the drive thru window in klan hoods and I'll still be ordering that spicy chicken sandwich

Every year the college I attend sets up a big Christmas tree in the middle of the yard and organizations/students are allowed to put ornaments on it. Well, an org. decided to put a silhouette of a black figure with his hands up dressed as Santa, and a sign that said "Don't shoot"

Well, the owner of this bar didn't appreciate some "ignorant person/people defiling a symbol of Christianity" I'm not sure if he was referring to the tree or Santa. Anyway, he made a Facebook post about it on the business page of the bar and said the people who put this on the tree and the ones who agree with it were no longer welcome at his establishment.

I haven't been back since....

"Fuck this shit man"

it was owned by Bears fans, and I went with my Saints fan buddy to watch the game when those two teams were in the NFC title game in like 06 or whenever it was. Some Bears fans tried to start a fight with us...I looked over at the bartender and they quickly looked away. We were clearly being harassed and the management did jack...so I said F those guys, and karma came back as they got shut down by the feds for drugs in 2010.

arguing over the Immaculate reception, had ref whistles and talking all kinds of trash.

A fan of the Ravens in the corner minding his business said "yes" after a good play low as shit.

Manager was walking past him and said "shhh, keep the noise down"

I'm not too picky when it comes to pizza. I never write yelp reviews but this neighborhood place was so bad I had to give them a 1 star. I will never ever order from there again. just thinking about that shitty pizza again makes me mad.

No

Coca-cola products (including their water brands)
Chiquita
Mcdonalds
...

I try not to buy everything in supermarkets.

I try to support small businesses, although I keep away from some places where they weren't polite/respectful/...
