"Fellas: Do You Have A Spending Limit When It Comes To 1st Dates?"

Or "money ain't a thang?" (c) JD

A partner of mine says he never spends more than $50 bucks on a 1st date

Like if a girl suggested the most expensive joint to eat at on your first date would you be feeling some of way in your head abt it?

the first date spot. It seems to be as much about preferring guys who know how to plan as much as it is them just being lazy and not wanting to have to think about any of that kind of stuff.

It really just depends on if he's being cheap or if thats his financial situation. If that's just his situation and he's trying then im cool with it. If he cheap then I'll just eventually stop talking to him. But that's hard to assess from just a first date, cause as you see most guys are not trying to spend a lot anyway regardless of whether they have it or not lol.

14. "yes - as a general rule, I don't spend much money on a 1st date"
In response to Reply # 0
Mon Mar-02-15 01:38 PM by Vex_id

for a few reasons:

~the most important purpose of a first date is to assess the energy and determine if there is a mutual spark - if not - no amount of money or fineness will compensate for that

~I do not want to put forth any notions that I am trying to impress with the amount of money I spend on a first date, nor am I trying to prove a point that I got it like that, as if that's what she's trying to determine on a first date, we won't work out anyway. In fact, one of my biggest turn-offs is when a woman suggests a super ritzy restaurant for a 1st date.

~I don't want to be pinned to a long, drawn out event/dinner on a first date. In the event that there is horrible chemistry, spending 2-3 hours small-talking and pretending to be interested is torture.

To me, the first ideal date is a walk in a park, a coffee/tea house, or some other venue where you can either stay for hours or leave within 30 mins. without it being particularly odd.

Best 1st dates I've had have cost between $0-$15

After mutual interest has been determined, I'm much more inclined to spend more time/money on a second date.

This way, if it's a good date, you pay more. If it's shitty, you pay less and have an easy exit.

A nice dinner on the first date is not happening*

the 1st date shows that i can. the 2nd sees if you're going to just sit there and expect or try and chip in. and if you get mad about it....then you lose.

if the date starts approaching your spending limit you just end the date early or change the remaining segments on the fly
that's another reason why dinners are wack 1st dates. you are stuck there and she can run up the bill with you having no control

A girl I used to date was on a double date with my homey, his girlfriend and my homey's uncle (only a few years older). Said she started ordering all this expensive stuff from *that* side of the menu and he got pissed just watching it. Came to me like "I see why you don't mess with her any more"

Never had it happen to me, but honestly I don't take women out on dates that I haven't adequately phone-screened first.

i think this is a very important part.

i feel like mostly all of the horror stories are from dates with perfect-strangers.

i can't imagine going on a date with someone that i can't even tell will be a horror at dinner, for whatever reason.

I'm not a heavy drinker, so the idea that anyone would want more than two drinks in one sitting is something I have to remind myself of all the time. But yes, I've had it lead to resentment on my end. Resentment that built up over about a 2 month period.

YOU ALWAYS have to be on alert (at least I was) when you go out on a 1st date or otherwise w/one of them...

They'll buy drinks not because they're drinkers but because it's *free*....and you're an American...who can (presumably) afford it lol...they w/o question will want to go to the most expensive restaurant and order enough food to take home to the family lol

I made plans to go out w/a chick this one time when I first got to C.R. and a couple of hours before we were meeting up she called and asked me if her friend could ride w/us...and I was like sure since we were going in a taxi

We get to the club and her girl jumps right out the taxi and goes right into the club *w/o* paying and I'm thinking she must know the dude at the door lmao...and when I get ready to pay the girl at the door charges me for 3 ppl...and ol girl ordered drinks/food that she didn't so much as even offer a tip for

I went off on the chick I was with in the best broken spanish possible lol

I guess because as a guy nothing about dating is free for me - everything is to be earned and/or paid for by me, unless she decides to be nice to me and cover the tip every now and again.

The first 5 or 6 women I ever took out on adult dates, I thought they just all coincidentally wanted drinks. I didn't know that was basically standard.

women hate it when we Americans give a tip when it's included in the bill

That's the kinda stuff that makes them think ALL Americans got it like that...and why they will spend your money up if you allow them...

Yeah, fam, I learned my lesson after that...but I learned the hard way lol

And the doggie bag thing is REAL

An American man going on a nice p, relatively expensive dinner date w/a Latin american female from a 3rd world country?

Yeah she already been instructed to bring back some leftovers for the fam lol...

about sharing which restaurants you like in whatever city you're in.

If there's a second date, now you have a shortlist of places she likes. OR, you might be familiar with a restaurant she's been wanting to try, and you can steer her on the menu also ("the bread and water is really good here, trust me.")

that's more something i do later to mix it up or when i am at that point where we have little to talk about because we do everything together.

drinks or a light meal is a good first date to me, unless there has been a good amount of buildup. then i will do the nice restaurant. i never take a chick to a cheap restaurant really.

or occasionally for a first date I'd make dinner at my house, which would usually run me $20-$30 for good ingredients & wine.

>A partner of mine says he never spends more than $50 bucks on
>a 1st date

Obviously my economic circumstances are very different today but god forbid if I were back on the market I don't think my strategy would change much.

>Like if a girl suggested the most expensive joint to eat at on
>your first date would you be feeling some of way in your head
>abt it?

I had an awful date once I've posted about here before where I let the woman choose the spot.
-Parked in a $20 lot
-Restaurant dinner was $125 + tip at a time when I was making like $30k/yr, not really feasible for me.
-That $125 included a round of drink for her friend and her friend's boyfriend, who were spying on us from across the street and when she saw them my date invited them in for drinks... on my tab. I would have been madder but the friend was way cuter than my date.

There were several conversational red flags as well.

I paid up without complaining, but left the car running when I walked her to her door later that night and never followed up with her.
