"Michelle Rodriguez "minorities should stop stealing white superhero role..."

Reporter: "Are you going to be the Green Lantern?"

Michelle Rodriguez: "Hahaha! That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard!"

http://www.tmz.com/videos/0_fq1116yl/

Michelle Rodriguez: "I think it's so stupid for like, everybody because of this, like you know, whole 'Minorities in Hollywood' thing."

Reporter: "Well it's been all over the internet..."

Michelle Rodriguez: "But it's so stupid. It's like, stop stealing, you know, all the white people's superheroes. Like, make up your own, you know what I'm saying? What's up with that?"

See, if she act like she knew there's been a black GL since the 70s, you'd think she actually cares about superheroes, but she's really just promoting white hegemony in mass media. This is just a crabs in a barrel mentality. She don't want to let Donald Glover be great.

Stop stealing the poor white people's super heroes!!!!

Generally I agree. The solution to the white male hero myth isn't to make white characters black on screen, it's to stop making 9/10 heroes in every medium regardless of genre a white man.

That being said, if I'd been standing next to here I would have just slid out of frame. Man, I hope she understands why she's getting a backlash, it isn't really what she said so much as the terrible, terrible way she said it.

openning casting up to race for a character where race doesn't matter isn't bad for anyone.

Eartha Kit played Catwoman, but that couldn't have happened if this need to look exactly like the comic rational was in play.

Also, yeah I don't care what race spiderman is, but the bigger issue that we've got to stick our people in characters that weren't developed or mythologized with our perspective in mind leads me to conclude that despite her backwards logic, Michelle Rodriguez has a point, we do need more of our own superheroes.

Creating characters that command big budget films doesn't just happen, regardless of race. In general, new superheroes just don't do as well, period.

The newest superhero that I can think of off top that went mainstream is Spawn back in the 90s.

TWD grew into a huge franchise but when we're talking about modern mythological heroes, there aren't a lot of wildly popular new ones & they definitely aren't the ones studies are rushing to produce huge movies around.

It's about a 17 year old military genius that unites the gangs of LA against the Police Department.

"What if the most gifted military mind of our generation was in the head of a 17-year old female gang member from Los Angeles. Hannibal, Genghis Khan, Napoleon...Destiny Ajaye."

http://www.newsarama.com/21798-military-genius-17-year-old-female-gang-member-takes-on-top-cow.html

There is a free issue on comixology...

https://www.comixology.com/Pilot-Season-Genius-1/digital-comic/10510

unfortunately, It doesn't seem like the issues have been collected into a single volume yet but the individual issues can be purchased on the topcowstore.com

http://www.thetopcowstore.com/searchresults.asp?cat=91

It's probably as radical as a realistic comic with a black protagonist can be so I'm definitely going to buy the issues soon & probably again when/if they get collected

Hopefully it's all the way on point, Virgil Hawkins is pretty easily one of the best black superhero characters of all time, imo.

look, ain't nobody stealing white people superheroes, she was wrong for saying that dumb shit & blaming actors of color for the few roles they've got that she thinks "should" have gone to a white guy because that's how the source material was drawn before when segregation was still legal

She not saying "make your own" because she wants to see more superheroes of color, otherwise she'd know that they already have them and could make them right now. She's choosing to invalidate those characters without knowing a damn thing about what she talking about

And that might not be general knowledge to her? Furthermore if that particular blk green lantern existed, would they have even considered casting a blk actor for the role? Most likely no.

And overall her point is that brown folks need to stop trying to fit into these white role and create their own. That's easier said than done but she does have a valid point.

Green Lantern isn't a "white role" so why is she trying to convince people it "should" be that way?

Your first paragraph completely invalidates your second one. Her point is invalid because folks have been creating their own. Interesting that a comic about an intergalactic police force is somehow inherently a white role.

Just IMO though.

Yes! Can we discusss GOTG and how ridiculous Rodriguez is? White roles? So how does she explain Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Zoe Saldana in the film? They aren't WHITE, and they're playing characters who clearly aren't White....

Rodriguez's original comment and her weak ass apology just smacks of someone who just gleefully enjoys being misinformed.

She doesn't have a point at all....SMH

jeez

The fucking Civil Rights movement was essentially mass meetings of people asking for decency

beside basic common decency for fellow man being a good thing, It doesn't make business sense for companies to not have a diversity amongst characters to market

not only is your rhetoric over the top, it's dumb as fuck

I thought you were saying something basic like, "You owe it to your fellow man to treat him with respect."

That's what you were getting at right? Cuz this discussion got real angry real fast.

my main point was "everyone owe everyone basic decency" in response to "whites own minorities nothing"

but on the larger point of "minorities" "stealing" corporate owned superheroes, it's just dumb as fuck for companies to not have diversity in in the characters they market

could have said "i'm a woman, the GL is a man..." and let it be that. obviously she's showing her ignorance.

and no i can't agree to this dumb shit, saying "oh she has a point." no the fuck she doesn't. no one is "stealing" anything, if a black person tries out and the director gives that role to a black (or any other minority) how is that "stealing." I never thought it was stealing when roles of black ppl are giving to whites (this only happens with real LIVE minority roles, not fictional super heroes."

it's just hilarious to me that people argue about what race a super hero is suppose to be when they aren't even real so it doesn't even matter.

There's hundreds - maybe thousands - of Green Lanterns. Many of them are females. At least two are female humans - one is Latina (hence why her name probably popped up), the other is...green.

What is this minorities in Hollywood thing she speaks of?

*off to Wiki*

If this chick don't SHUT ALL THE WAY THE FUCK UP about minorities in Hollywood...

*looks into camera*

Bitch you one of us off rip so sit you ass down somewhere. She's sounds like the Tea Party black chick in Utah that spouts these same talking points.

I repeat, THESE CHARACTERS AREN'T REAL. These motherfuckers on that kick the ladder up behind them shit need to fall all the way back talking reckless. I blame Fox News for her conditioning.

Spider-Man is like The Crow or The Slayer, there always has to be somebody carrying the totemic powers of the Spider god Anansi. Pete's predecessor, Ezekiel, even took him to the African cave where the spirit dwells in order to vanquish the evil gypsy moth lady who tried to eat him and ruin his lovelife.

Michelle Rodriguez Clarifies Controversial Remarks About Diversity In Superhero Movies

The Huffington Post | By Lauren Zupkus

Michelle Rodriguez wants to clear the air after her comments about superhero movies made headlines.

When TMZ asked Rodriguez on Friday if she was "going to be the Green Lantern," the actress responded, "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Because of this whole 'minorities in Hollywood' thing ... It's so stupid. Stop stealing all the white people's superheroes. Make up your own."

The 36-year-old took to Facebook on Saturday to clarify the meaning behind her statements. In the video, Rodriguez first apologizes to those offended.

"I want to clarify about my comment yesterday. I stuck my foot in my mouth once again, and I said that people should stop trying to steal white people superheroes," she said. "I guess it got taken out of context because a lot of people got offended ... but I have a tendency to speak without a filter, so sorry about that."

The "Furious 7" star continued on to say that she wants to see more minority writers and producers create their own original characters for minorities.

What I really meant was, ultimately at the end of the day there's a language. And the language that you speak in Hollywood is successful franchise. And I think that there are many cultures in Hollywood that are not white that can come up with their own mythology ... I'm just saying that instead of trying to turn a girl character into a guy or instead of trying to turn a white character into a black character or Latin character, I think that people should stop being lazy, and that people should actually make an effort in Hollywood to develop their own mythology.

Once again, she is a fucking moron. These are fictional characters so it doesn't matter what race they are. When she says people, she means people of color. I hope DC and Marvel take note and not cast her in any of their films.

I'm sorry that I spoke about a subject that I have no knowledge about and should have done my research before addressing the subject at hand"

but since the above suggests a level of intelligence Rodriguez clearly wasn't accessing when she misspoke, she should just say this:

"I'm sorry I'm a dumb ass motherfucker, y'all. I'm talking loud and wrong about superheros and I don't know SHIT about them. I'ma have several seats in the corner over here. (points to the seats next to the trash in the hallway). YEA. RIGHT HERE."

Either way, STFU Michelle Rodriguez.
