"Brooklyn to the Bay - advice needed"

so I recently moved from my hometown of New York City to the San Francisco Bay Area. I definitely moved just in time, because a cold blast of air blew in right after I had left.

Anyway, I wanted to become more knowledgeable about the recreation, places to buy things for black folk, and the off the radar haunts. so far, me and the lady have visited Oakland once for bunch and the museum, have been to SF a couple times, and only made it to San Jose for a drive in movie.

I am looking for laid back quirky, artsy things along the lines of what we were doing back home: first saturdays at the museum, wine bars, regular bars, Brooklyn Bowl, music venues that cater to okp artists, free concerts, slam poetry, etc.

Also, exactly where do natural sisters get their hair cut/styled? Where is a good place for natural hair car products?(looking for exactly where, not "go to oakland")

Lastly, what about SF and Oakland should I enjoy/avoid?

awesome, thanks for that. Still trying to get a feel for the sound here. I know that the radio has a much greater appreciation for old school. I have heard the bay area stars, but only old stuff, so i dont know whats new other than that Big Sean/e40 joint. I got here when Jacka died, so I heard a lot of him

But I figured you meant shop.
Haven't done underground yet.
Couple places in sunset and Japan town I've done. Nothing spectacular.
But still good and low key.
As long as the dont fuck up the egg I'm usually good.
Yamadaya has maybe my fave kakuni pork belly.

izakaya sozai (sp) was the first ramen i ever had here, loved it. and their crunchy rice sushi was bomb.
havent gone back, i need to remedy that. damn those waits though.

dude i kinda hate Hapa. their stand sucked in my opinion.
maybe it was an off day but their broth tasted like i made it at home.
and i ordered karage with it and they put it in the broth.
what kinda crap is that.
what's the point of putting crunchy food in soup for takeaway (since its a stand)

In response to Reply # 35

I used to hit up their popups at Wing Wings, so it was more of a sitdown environment. If you got the karage they would serve the chicken on the side so it wouldn't sog up. They're a little pricy IMO, but I was always satisfied when eating there.

Non-ramen related, but have you checked out Smokestack yet? This city sucks for BBQ but the shit they have over there is pretty good.

Back in the east bay now

Great place to raise kids, I love that my son is from RC

Boring as shit, but close to downtown Palo Alto,

Halfway between San Jo and tha Sco

Kinda far from Oakland tho but not really 30-45 min drive

What kinda artsy ish you into its a lot to do just spread out

I'm from the city of sun and seas,
wind breeze, money make love turn to enemy, highest crime rate in the vicinity

Well different kind of assholes.
I think it has alot to do with our living situation and the likes.
But we kinda don't want to move back to nyc.
I do miss certain foods and diversity.
Just cause they say diverse they mean diverse for the rest of America.
Has nothing on nyc.
My instagram shows I'm loving it here.

in the last 3 years there everybody i was tight with bounced

the places I loved were closing down with a quickness

suddenly just being a young irresponsible park sitting mission person lost its luster

the area changed and it was now catering to a totally different, well heeled crowd

artist were leaving, the energy was just being sucked out of it

it got very dire

the life blood of a city is the constant influx of new people who mix in with the soup and add their own flavor. what is scary about the new crowd is that they choose not to engage, they built a new empire right on top of what was already existing and that is what fucked up a lot of people. There was no recognition of an existing community. The city became a playground for the new crowd.

oakland for years was where you went if you wanted bay area life but didnt want or could not pay SF rent prices, then the folks in SF left and went to Oakland and drove up the prices

on top of all of that, I was getting over sick of some of the FUNKY ass attitudes of the white folks there. when I would walk into most rooms it would be as if i were an ak47 wielding crazy person.

black people were 6% and I would go days without seeing another black person or if i did they would likely be homeless

there is no black professional presence, when you go downtown the black peoiple you see would just be the craziest looking street people.

furthermore when I would complain about the lack of black people everyone would automatically say "move to oakland!" man...fuck am I doing changing my whole life for that? My house was dope as fuck and thats why i stayed at my spot for nearly a decade.

by the end I got tired of meeting nothing but wide eyed fresh faced newbies who just LOVED the city and they would hate it if you would say "its great but actually......." and you start to give them facts

dating there was fucking horrible. I do alright but I could just tell that that was not my tribe, that was not my target audience by a long shot.

i got tired of feeling genuine excitement for meeting other black people. on some "OH HEY! we should be friends! we gotta stick together!"

NYC has its own issues with displacement but its bigger here and you can escape to other places.

whats funny is that when I was there the big enemy where techies/tech employees because they were making good money. the tech scene in the bay area is full of fucking hubris.

whats funny is that I work in tech in NYC and its TOTALLY different here. its just a job, we arent trying to save the world or be the most clever fuckers in the room.

"diverse" is thrown around so loosely here.
i honestly havent met any native black people here in sf.
all the black people ive hung out with here are all from back east or LA.
i can imagine how crazy the change has been in a decade.
i kinda hate going to the mission cause of how different valencia st is to mission st.
makes me sad and i didnt even know how different its gotten.
i lived in berkley/oakland before i moved to the sunset, i can see myself moving back to the eastbay one day.

Tuxedo (Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One) is doing their album release party this Thursday at a spot called Hawthorn in SF. King Most will be opening up for them in the front room. I'll be spinning in the back room.

Also, Dam-Funk will be here doing a party with Sweater Funk (80s r&b & boogie)in a week or two https://www.facebook.com/events/886345528052846

For live music, keep an eye out on calendars for The New Parish (oak), Brick & Mortar (SF), Chapel (SF). Those are smaller venues that have a lot of on the bubble acts coming through. In San Jose, anything Universal Grammar does seems right up your alley: https://www.facebook.com/UniversalGrammar?ref=br_rs They brought out Taylor McFerrin for a show yesterday.

we're in oakland.

I found the woman who does my hair on yelp... i can ask her for other natural hair stylists as well because i think she primarily does locs and doesn't cut hair.

Black haircare products I've found at a beauty supply shop at the corner of 40th and Telegraph in Oakland. It's a typical big beauty supply store... weaves on the wall behind the counter and rows and rows of different products.

We're still looking for the "black scene" too to be honest. It's a bit weird out here in that regard. That being said, would love to do a brunch or something to get folks together sometime. It's at least a start.

So I am not a clubber or of the 18/21 crowd. And, I am a somewhat older okp( almost 37). Not that I care about age too much,(since I am not chasing 21 year old girls) but where do the 30 somethings go in SF/oak/sj? I will go to a flying lotus or Sbtrkt show regardless if people there are half my age, but i guess i wonder what the night time offers for the 30 something on the reg.

I am always good with all ages events like film screenings, galleries and such but I guess since I am looking to meet new folks in the area I should find my age bracket. Donde?
