makes sense. 18 year old legal drinkers would kill mad people.

But, I am open to an exception for military.

BTW, I also think the Pron age should be 21.

and most don't kill anyone.

legalizing drinking for kids aged 18 to 20 will just reduce the # of them who get arrested.

the major problem w/the high drinking age (as you know) is it forces these kids to drink in situations where their consumption isn't monitored or regulated. if they drink in public places like bars and restaurants they can be cut off from service by tenders in licensed facilities (who have a duty to cut them off when overserved). as of now these kids are drinking at private parties and other informal gatherings where no one monitors them.

the kids would still have their house parties even if they could go out to bars but there'd be less of that. and more of them drinking where they can be monitored and controlled.

fuck you.

? 18 year olds able to get tore up right there in the clubs, in the applebees, in the longhorn steakhouses, etc and then leaving... to me is a bad idea when you compare that to 18 year olds drinking at say a college party environment. Could just be me tho.

A bunch of 18yo chicks sharing the same long island iced tea, or a grip of dudes sharing a bottle of henny in the alley outside and not drinking in the club just isn't good for business.

will offer cheap drinks to lure 18 yr olds.

they do it already to get the 18 yr olds w/fake IDs. i've heard of joints selling beers for $1 or $2 regularly.

hell, we already have bars w/$1 drink nights - i regularly attended those when i was aged 21 to 24. and the joints would be packed w/my peers.

The ONLY thing that would keep many of them out of the club is being in college. And that still leaves the summer, the height of clubbing season. Guaranteed. Goofy young girl would get a TON of attention, and they know it.

18yo dudes, on the other hand would stay away. They can't compete with grown men with jobs, cribs, cars, money, nice clothes & more refined personalities.

Just one of those realities.

Can't really see a big downside to 18 being the drinking age, because a lot of 18yos already drink anyway (especially at college). I was 16 the first time I got drunk, 19 the first time a smoked herb and 22 the first time I smoked a cig.

when I was in high school,
alcohol being illegal kept us on the straiht and narrow.

and I am sure new prohibitions on drinking will
not be selectively enforced.

you're doing a great job

no real logical argument for why 18 yrs old (or 21 yr olds really) should be encouraged to start drinking any earlier than they do

i'm not saying they should be encouraged.

but they're already doing it. and they're doing it dangerously. and legal prohibitions don't keep them from doing it.

so let's stop acting brand new and accept that we've lost the fight - 18 yr olds drink booze. let's manage the process and do what we can to keep them and us safe.

>weed and even coke >>>>>>> that shit if we're talking overall
>impact to society

sure.

btw - i'm in favor of legalization of possession and use of weed and coke by adults aged 18 and up.

fuck you.

Most 16yos just aren't responsible enough to handle being behind the wheel of a 4,000lb machine travelling at high speeds with a smartphone in their pockets.

This isn't the 60s when the US was much less populated. The roads are extremely important to everyday life, and also one of the leading causes of premature death in this country. Far too much at stake to just unleash kids on the road that can't go a few minutes without looking at their phones or doing some other dumb shit.

Besides, where's a 16 have to drive to that's so essential? Work? lol

Edit: Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for teens (I think 13-19 for this study):

I must admit that I'm bothered by the idea that as a responsible adult I have to share the road with teens that are legally still children. It's dangerous enough as it is with all of the adults that text & drive or drive drunk or distracted.

Part of why this bugs me so much is because I only own bikes right now (2 road, 1 moto) so "a little accident" for someone in a car could easily be disfigurement, paralysis or death for me.

Yea..

kids are dumb... I did any manner of stupid stuff when I was 17 driving in NJ..

I think we need to prepare young adults in general better to driving on the road...

The alcohol stuff is obviously an issue because of drinking and driving but honestly what are the rates of 18 yr olds getting DUI's vs 40 yr olds..

..no need to raise the age limit, because car accident's aren't specific to age/gender.

*this would include renewal as well.

we all know that far too many people are handed a license without really understanding the vehicles that they're privileged to own & operate.

....until I experienced 18 year olds legally drinking in the Army. When I was stationed in Germany, the Army would let the 18 year olds drink since it was legal there. Let's just say I can see why the minimum age is 21. Cats who haven't had enough experience from being under mom's and pop's thumbs typically don't know how to act when the liquor is in their systems.

I'd say the same for alcohol, but it's clearly too late and people will fight tooth and nail for their booze, even if it kills them.

Like I have been to a lot of countries where the age is 18 and the impact varies greatly. I am a lot less concerned with when we allow kids to drink than when they actually start and how they do it once they start. I wouldn't oppose lowering the age but regardless of whether or not it changes, we need to be a more comprehensive, honest and modest way of educating kids about drinking and drugs. The idea shouldn't be scaring them away from it, but rather how to not be complete fucking idiots about it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
