"Poll question: Best political discourse show on U.S. TV"

After being thoroughly fed up w/ the level of discourse presented on domestic networks, I've been watching a ton of foreign news supplemented with Press TV & Vice, and it's fairly astonishing at just how polarized and dumbed down our news programs are. Face The Nation is an absolute atrocity now.

I do think Real Time w/ Maher is markedly more dynamic than any other political show in the U.S., simply because it's the only show which features competitive, open, and unapologetic exchange amongst a (usually) engaging/insightful panel.

Poll result (18 votes)
Rachel Maddow (1 votes)Vote
Bill Maher (Real Time) (8 votes)Vote
Daily Show (Jon Stewart) (6 votes)Vote
Morning Joe (0 votes)Vote
GPS Fareed Zakaria (0 votes)Vote
Other (list below) (3 votes)Vote

Contrary' which deals with women's issues

Both are my political shows to watch...the guests on each show are always informed and provide much more informed and nuanced analysis than what you get on cable news network

Aljazeera is great source for news but I don't get to watch them that often

most importantly they don't have an issue with agreeing with each other occasionally. Sometimes, Pat Buchanan and Donna Brazile agree on stuff.

Has it always been like this? Is it just since the start of the 24 hour news channels?

It seems like all of the US cable news channels (CNN, Fox, MSNBC) are politics almost 24/7 (the morning shows are probably a little less politics heavy).

Their format is straightforward. Introduce some political topic (either through video or short intro by the host).
The talking head talks it to death then solicits comments from others who are unqualified to give real comments.

I hate that shit.
Broadcast tv channels are a little better, but not much. It seems like BBC and Al Jazeera do less of it.

incidentally, that's actually what Brian Williams did - just regular
old-fashioned Walter Cronkite.

At some point, politics became pop culture and profitable to cover,
and that's a good thing -- because it has a very impacting influence
on our lives (i.e. how we are governed/ruled) - but the discourse has
really devolved dramatically.

BBC has been a tad of a letdown to me lately. It seems more CNN vanilla
to me now than from what I remember it to be in previous years.

i haven't watched real time or the daily show in about 10 years, never watched maddow's show, GPS Fareed Zakaria sounds like something on cnn i've never watched, Morning Joe i've channel surfed to and never realized was a serious program

what's wrong with face the nation? i've thought of jumping ship, but i'm still watching meet the press with chuck todd in that time slot (i kinda want to watch this week with george instead, but it conflicts with cbs sunday morning). i preferred david gregory to chuck so far (it's only been half a year), and i did watch far back enough to have seen tim russert. chuck has the knowledge and passion, but as political discourse i think the show has suffered compared with the first few years of david gregory (not the last ditch attempts at improving ratings in his final months). the viewpoints are safer and less diverse, and the pool of guests is really shallow and uninspired, so it feels watered down. there's too much agreement on the panel, and everyone seems like friends. i like chuck's interviews and can tell he's trying, but he can only do so much.

pompous pseudo racist playing the humorist left of center polemical diatribe role. FOH. Stewart ethers that clown in his sleep

my choices right now are John Oliver, Maddow, MHP, and Chris Hayes. Colbert over all of them, when he was still on, which when we think that he, Stewart and Oliver are comedians kind of underscores Vex's point.

but really my bread and butter is on the net The New Inquiry, Jacobin, The Baffler, Vox, Vice, and the Atlantic; though the last three be on that bullshit some times too, but not often

some Amy Goodman (though I'm at work for 85% of her show), Young Turks and Al Jezeera here and there

in the whip KCRW and KPFK, though the former gets very bourgeois angsty after the noon, and KPFK is way too lefist old guard in SO MANY SHOWS

same. if i'm catching her, it means i'm late to work and the local radio station isn't fucking up (i can't tell you how many times they've forgotten to start her feed on time), and i've been enjoying music more than trying to hear half of democracy now during my commutes for as far back as i can remember. it's still the best political discourse on radio or tv. it's left (uh der) but has a full spectrum of guests and gives them a chance to talk in a way most of the tv shows only pretend to at best. amy should be a role model in how to interview guests and run a program.

I know it's not on TV, but obviously, we all have the internet

after the schtick of satire like Maher, Stewart, etc...

and the follow the leader, repeat of headlines from major outlets like CNN and MSNBC

when that gets old

democracy now is where its at.

the video broadcast (of the radio show) does air in some markets. for me it comes on on pbs at the same time i am watching one of the national network evening news broadcasts. in addition, the democracy now web site offers video "podcasts" of each show and occasional extras as well as on their youtube channel.

i definitely think of it more as a radio show...

yeah, there's that too

not much to watch

I usually put it on in the morning

and just listen to it in the background

while I check fb, okp, etc...

democracy now always puts together one hell of show.

And I am not a fan of the crossfire format with it's WWF style of discourse but if it's political discourse you are looking for you'd really need a variety of perspectives given a platform.
