Mo'Nique: I'm 'difficult', 'tacky' and was blackballed after Oscar win

Precious star who won best supporting actress award five years ago says Hollywood has shunned her for being ‘tactless’ and that parts in subsequent Lee Daniels movies were offered to her then given to Oprah Winfrey

The Oscar-winning actor Mo’Nique has claimed she was “blackballed” by Hollywood following her victorious turn as an abusive mother in the harrowing 2009 Lee Daniels drama Precious.

In an essay to be published in the 27 February issue of the Hollywood Reporter, seen by E! News, the 47-year-old actor said she only found out a few months ago that she had been deemed persona non grata by studios.

“I got a phone call from Lee Daniels,” said the actor. “And he said to me, ‘Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.’ I said, ‘Why?’ And he said, ‘Because you didn’t play the game.’”

The actor reminded her director that she famously did not campaign for her best supporting actress Oscar win in 2010.

Mo’Nique goes on to suggest that her absence from the screen - the actor has just a handful of relatively minor film and television credits between 2009 and last year’s Blackbird - is because she is “difficult,” “tactless” or “tacky”, adding: “That’s why I have my beautiful husband because he’s so full of tact. I’m just a girl from Baltimore. But being from that place, you learn not to let anybody take advantage of you.”

Mo’Nique cites two roles eventually taken by Oprah Winfrey, that of Forest Whitaker’s wife in Daniels’ The Butler and that of Richard Pryor’s grandmother in a forthcoming Daniels biopic, as examples of parts she was initially offered but later discovered she had lost. “They all just went away,” she said.

Daniels issued a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, which reads: “Mo’Nique is a creative force to be reckoned with. Her demands through Precious were not always in line with the campaign. This soured her relationship with the Hollywood community. I consider her a friend. I have and will always think of her for parts that we can collaborate on, however the consensus among the creative teams and powers thus far were to go another way with these roles.”

Oh, you’re *that* person?

Cool. You’re replaceable. Bye.

It’s troubling how she confuses being ‘tactless’ with letting people take advantage of you.

I mean, shit, I get it. I’ve traditionally been the guy who said what he felt exactly how I felt it, or, at best, tempered shit that I wanted to say that was too awful to get away with into something that allowed me to speak my mind without going too far over the line.
Well, guess the fuck what? That shit didn’t help me all that much. Hell, it bit me in the ass at my current job not long ago and I had to really play that game to dig my way out. Sometimes the price of success can be as simple as either keeping your mouth shut or becoming a diplomat who works the angles.

If I’ve learned anything over the years is that winning the argument and making sure people know you’re right and they’re wrong usually doesn’t win much of anything. She doesn’t need to be a doormat in order to utilize a little more tact.

#BasedMayne was a bigger box office draw and a more reliable actor than Robert Downey Jr - remember, this is when RDJ was JUST getting back in the saddle after his period of drug abuse and rehab.

So yeah, Terrence Howard was the highest-paid performer in that film.

When it came time to do Iron Man 2, Marvel intended to pay RDJ a LOT more money than on part 1, as he deserved it, and were looking to find ways to renegotiate Terrence Howard to a lower salary with less screen time (Howard had signed a three-picture deal - at a certain per-picture salary - with Marvel to appear in all the Iron Man films).

Howard and his people balked, and add to this that apparently director Jon Favreau didn't exactly enjoy working with #BasedMayne and he was eventually replaced.

You may be joking and I'll give you that. However, it has often been posited that dealing with surly, disrespectful, difficult women is a sign of strength (especially, but not exclusively in the black community, I'm looking at you Marilyn/Sheryl)

Nah - b

Adults gotta be adults. If you're an asshole, you're an asshole, stop placing the onus on others to 'deal with you' as a show of their strength.

They are a small subset of the Hollywood population. They will have less sway in decisions about productions and casting than producers/directors/writers/studios. Maybe?

Bigger and better have, and still do all the things she refused to do to support the film. Hell, Oprah was ALL UP AND THROUGH those press junkets for Selma.

It's cost of entry and, I believe, is included in contracts with the studios, but don't quote me on that.

Folks are saying she is in the wrong for not doing press for the movie.
She says she isn't getting paid to attend so she didn't go (I think that's the basic story?)

How is this different than the Marshawn situation?
I was pro-Beastmode, but this is making me think and reconsider a little.

are more directly related to duties of an actor than a football player giving interviews. Actors have to promote their projects to the public. Either by giving interviews or appearing on talk shows. That's part of how the movie is marketed and makes money.

It's debatable how much value NFL interviews vs movie interviews add to the company's profits.
I guess maybe the NFL is a stronger brand on it's own and thus doesn't live a die by the amount of media attention brought on any one individual.

But the key thing to focus on is that only other people are benefiting from their labor.
By doing interviews, Marshawn and Monique are not compensated at all. But their labor on the press circuit solely benefits the NFL and the movie.
They are exactly the same in that regard

In response to Reply # 69

require them to do some level of press for the film, like "yes, this is part of why we paid you and you have to do this." The NFL sort of has the same thing - hence "I'm just here so I won't get fined" - but with movie stars and movies it's a far more intense situation; depending on your contract, your ability to promote the film does directly affect an actor's earnings (if they are a producer o nthe film or have a deal that guarantees them backend pay). It also affects your ability to get your next job and the job after that - long term contracts are very, very rare in Hollywood in 2015.

Oscar campaigning - which is what Mo'Nique _didn't_ do for "Precious" - is a little bit different and a lot more intense, because "playing the game" means party, party, dinner, gathering, screening, party, gathering, etc. ad nauseum from November to March. It's technically above and beyond what the contract calls for,m but it's to the actor's benefit if they are the one nominated to go to all these things, press the flesh, and try to win all of these awards for both themselves and the movie.

It's all political, and not necessarily easy, but it comes with the territory of starring in a film that's going up for awards season.

Lupita N played the game PERFECTLY. She wore stunning clothes at minor awards shows and was gracious in heartfelt interviews to build anticipation for the main event - the Oscars. We wanted to see what she'd wear and hear what she'd say in her acceptance speech. That is how to win the award AND set one's self up for future gigs.

Octavia Spencer did a good job too - and she's still working today in part bc of that. Monique fucked up the game.

fuck you.

Marshawn has to do press on a weekly basis from August until January basically - after physically working his ass off at games and practice. You'd get tired of that shit too after six months.

An actor does press for maybe 1-2 weeks before their movie comes out and sporadically during awards season. And popular actors have MAYBE 3 films a year max.

6 months of press is a lot fucking more than 6 weeks of press.

Leading up to the awards

Across cities and around the world first for film fests then for openings
Then comes the six weeks of awards

In a way many I ncluding fassbender for 12 yrs feel like they already did it put in promotional work for the film
And feel silly campaigning for themselves
And want to let the work speak
But it's really even more bullshit more intense on top of the wringer they already went through

That's just not true. They have a couple of red carpets for openings and the two weeks leading into the premier in each country. a smattering of appearances here whether other than that on a red carpet or two. It's no where near the amount of media availability required post game and during training camp for a 1st string nfl player.

here are the awards and press she was present for that i could find with a quick search

frankly she did pretty damn good

heres a timeline going backwards starting from the awards season in 2010:
consider these from Mar to Jan 2010
Academy Awards
Independent Spirit Awards
D.I.V.A Awards
NAACP Awards
SAG
PGA
Golden Globes
Film Critics Awards
Critics Choice Awards

screenings/press
Nov 2009
general press portraits were available for publicity on the publicity circuit
AFI Fest

Sept 2009
BET Awards

Oct 2009
NY Time portraits

she skipped the NYFF she was in Atlanta
was on the phone doing press for a washington post article in May
while lee was at the TFF because she was filming the Mo’Nique show
odds are the NYFF was for the same reason

Jan 2009
Sundance

so...what are they complaining about?

hiatus so that she could campaign, and she didn't want to because she needed to make money. I'm sure that is the key issue, because part of the issue is that she wanted to be paid to campaign.

Because skipping the NYFF probably isn't a good idea.

I also understand that she skipped a lot of the screenings, dinners, parties, etc. she was expected to attend.

and he is fined when he doesn't fulfill his obligations after games.

I could see if BM was on an indie squad trying to drum up a fan base to sell tickets but that isn't the case.

all that being said... if he gets cut and no one picks him up due to his stance on the press, I could see the similarities.

"But, as I've previously noted on this blog, there's been a growing resentment of the Oscar campaign process by more and more Hollywood artists, who are "fed up with the parade of glad-handing that has come to define the fall-to-winter awards season," as GoldDerby.com put it 2 years ago, the last time I wrote about this; the countless events, appearances, interviews, and receptions that are apparently expected from those who hope to make the nominations short lists, as well as win the coveted statue.

For example, during the awards season last year, Michael Fassbender joined the chorus, stating firmly in a GQ interview that he wouldn’t be campaigning for an Oscar nomination for his much-ballyhooed performance in "12 Years A Slave."

You might recall similar previous statements from others before him, made during recent awards seasons:

- David Cronenberg: "Every year I try to be as disconnected as possible... The people who are releasing the movie get excited, they want you to do more, and you understand it because the awards can maybe get more people to see the film… However, it is all bullshit, it is all annoying and it is all very problematical."

- Joaquin Phoenix: "I think it's total, utter bullshit, and I don't want to be a part of it … It was one of the most uncomfortable periods of my life when 'Walk the Line' was going through all the awards stuff and all that. I never want to have that experience again."

- Anthony Hopkins called the process "disgusting."

- Matt Damon: "It's ridiculous … We had Harvey Weinstein with us for 'Good Will Hunting,' and he's the guy who really sees the matrix when it comes to this stuff and I think we did a cocktail party. That was it … It's been really shocking to me to see what's happened , and not all good."

And there's more... but you get the gist.

Maybe one obvious point to note is that these dissenters were all white and male. Could that be something worth considering in all this? The privilege to be able to make these kinds of statements publicly, and seemingly not be censured for doing so - at least, from where I'm sitting. Certainly not as much as Mo'Nique was in 2009/2010.

In response to Fassbender's refusal to play the Oscar campaign game, his "12 Years A Slave" director, Steve McQueen backed his actor, stating, “His campaign is on screen. That’s Michael Fassbender’s Oscar campaign. He’s done his thing. That’s it.”

Mo'Nique said pretty much the same thing when she was nominated, but that didn't help her cause very much"

..no one really wants to do press for films, but its a necessary evil in the business of entertainment.

if you sign on for the role, you should be signing on for the work before, during, and after the filming is completed (including the press/promo work needed). however, that's not always the case. since hollywood is largely a game of favors, its always in their best interest to play nicely.

last time i checked, there was nothing about monique's skills as an actress that put her in the a-list category (not even that oscar for supporting actress).

if she wants it, she can get it. she's just gonna have to put in the work.

if she doesn't want to play the game, that's fine. just stop complainin' about it.

..marshawn lynch doesn't have a rep as bein' "difficult to work with."

while the media has exaggerated his reluctance to give interviews, his rep as a player (on the field & off) are stellar. he's the consummate team player, shows up for work on time & prepared, and all of his peers regard him as one of the best players in the league. even the media admits that while he's reluctant, their interaction with him is always professional & polite. he has never been a disruption to them or his peers/employers.

*anyone trying to compare his situation to mo'nique's clearly doesn't understand the significant differences & details involved with their particular line of work in entertainment. one of the major differences is that the media coverage for each is that while the media is always digging for dirt, press coverage for film isn't typically divisive & disruptive.

every nfl contract has a stipulation that requires a certain amount of time allotted for press. while both industries employ a considerable amount of pr/media to sell tickets, actors aren't always required to do so.

mo'nique, on the other hand, has never had a stellar rep. her personality hasn't endeared her to anyone (peers or media) outside of her inner circle. she's known as being difficult to work with for EVERYONE, including her fellow cast/directors/producers.

its one thing to have the press disappointed at being denied an opportunity to interview you with a ton of redundant questions, but its something entirely different when most of your peers dread having you on set because of the constant drama that comes along with working with you. mo'nique made a name for herself as bein' funny, yet difficult. unfortunately, she's become so difficult that most entertainment professionals avoid working with her because they don't think its worth it overall.

and this is in a business that has a long history of difficult characters & personalities (men AND women). so if she's not gettin' work because of her terrible attitude/demeanor, its far more likely that she's simply burned too many bridges or caused too many issues to be considered valuable to production.

Mo'Nique is essentially an independent contractor.

Marshawn works for a company.

if it's true that doing press was in her contract then it's pretty much no difference
it's also weird that ppl are trying to argue that lynch/monique aren't being paid to do press when everything in your contract is a condition for compensation

of course lynch value to the seahawks/NFL >>>>>>>>>>>>> monique's value to lee daniels right now
that's the biggest (only) difference really

Top-10 talented athletes don't grow on trees. Best believe if Marshawn was a bum he'd have been cut and bounced out of the league. Actresses, on the other hand, are all over the place. Monique must have thought she was top ten, but got cut off the squad. Apparently she wasn't as good as she thought. She should have did the promo if she wanted to further her career.

.... You have way more leeway. That's true even with everyday folks. My uncle was in a position where he wasn't easily replaceable due to being really good at his job, which happened to be a position not just anybody could do. He had enough leverage to where the company would cut him slack compared to the workers that could get replaced. He wasn't the type to abuse his situation but he did have them by the balls to where he could've if he wanted to.

The type of stunt Mo'nique pulled is the thing an A-lister whose starring roles are guaranteed to get butts into theater seats has a better chance of pulling. She must have thought that Oscar win was going to give her leverage. Unfortunately she didn't realize that making these studios even richer is the only way you can pull the diva moves and even then you don't want to go too overboard.

He does the press but he tried to charge Sony for doing a social media post to support a movie he was in.

I think part of it is that studios need to wise up and include ALLL this shit in contract negotiations: a minimum number of press appearances, a minimum for tweets, etc. nix the "mutually agreed upon" language and make the actors sign off on a baseline of support. Anything else is bonus.

Hollywood - like any other industry - has a game you have to play.

Plenty of notable GREAT actors, from Terrance Howard, to Tom Sizemore, have been 'blackballed' for their actions and their ability to work with other people. Nobody wants to work with a shitty person, especially if at the end of the day that person doesn't exactly move tickets. Someone might put up with like, Mark Wahlberg or Jennifer Lopez (no idea if they are bad to work with - just saying box office numbers) because they sell tickets.

Mo'Nique doesn't.

She was a supporting actor with a great role and she played it amazingly.

Take a stroll through Wikipedia supporting actresses to see that's not a golden ticket to get a bunch of other movies.

She seems like a nightmare and she didn't play the game.

Oh well.

Lee Daniels is poppin right now because of Empire.

She isn't.

The story isn't as interesting without his name.

So here we are.

It makes rounds on social media.

She does a sit down interview with someone worth their weight.

May lead to a few things.

Who knows.

She doesn't have much to lose.

but maybe she and her ppl see it where i don't. maybe she'll get hired somewhere b/c of this.

fuck you.
