this Bombay Sapphire tho *smacks lips* IS HITTIN'!

what's the best way (ie drink) to get the most out of this exquisite libation?

Second (very close) runner up: BeefEater, imho.

It's actually won a few spirit awards, I like the taste better than Beefeater or Sapphire. They tend to be a bit too dry when drinking with a bit of water.

there's a few distilleries and things in BK now

Widow Jane Bourbon/Whiskey in Red Hook. but it's like 60 bucks

Kings County Distillery over by the Navy Yard. theyre pretty pricey too

I know gin usually doesn't cost as much as whiskey but those prices are still insane to me

Greenhook is around 30 bucks

They are based in California and have a few different types.
My fave is the Terroir because it has a stronger pine scent and flavor.

I also like Few out of Evanston, IL and New Deal Distillery out of Portland.

ask for a Basil-ica or a Singapore Sling. The latter is far more popular/infamous but it's also a more complex drink.

Basil-ica:
Chill a cocktail glass and get an orange peel
Fill shaker with ice, rip up a fresh basil leaf
2 oz Plymouth gin
1 oz St. Germain/elderflower liqueur
5 dashes orange angostura bitters

Shake well in cocktail shaker, dump water/ice out of cocktail glass, rim the cocktail glass with orange peel, rest peel on the rim and strain from shaker into cocktail glass

Singapore Sling:
Fill cocktail shaker with ice
1.5 oz Tanqueray
1.5 oz pineapple juice
1 oz lemon juice
.75 oz cointreau
shake mix well and strain into tall collins / pint glass
top with soda water
drizzle .5 oz cherry brandy evenly atop and through drink
float .25 oz benedictine atop drink
garnish with maraschino cherry and orange slice with two straws

it's a very annoying drink if you don't know it. the bar I work at added seven drinks a couple months ago and this was one of them and for most it's easily the most confounding to make, I simply made it a goal of mine to memorize it.

but this is one of those drinks you don't order just anywhere, that's for sure. it has a story behind it but it's no old fashioned.

I don't get how folks enjoy it. For me, with tonic, soda, or in a cocktail only.

That said, some I like:

Martin Miller
Tanqueray 10 (regular is nice, as well)
Ungava

My friends who are gin and gin cocktail diehards tend to go with Hendricks.

hits ya strong initially w/o the build up & the flavor/essence is superb but most importantly there's no hangover the day after, well at least in my personal experience.

My boyfriend taught me about the different gin styles. This clip breaks it down pretty well:

http://www.saveur.com/article/Wine-and-Drink/5-Styles-of-Gin

I personally kinda hate the London Dry style cuz I'm not fond of the flavor of juniper berries. I'm more into the Genever and international styles. Bols Genever and Hendrick's are more my speed.

As for my favorite gin-based cocktail? I like a good Vesper. When a good quality Lillet's in the mix, it's a fantastic and refreshing cocktail. A South Side is also pretty good too.

And there's a pretty cool gin-focused bar here in Chicago called Scofflaw that made me realize I can appreciate a bigger variety of gin cocktails than I previously thought.
