"UMass bans Iranian students from science grad programs"

http://gizmodo.com/umass-will-no-longer-admit-iranian-students-to-engineer-1686322842

"The University has determined that recent governmental sanctions pose a significant challenge to its ability to provide a full program of education and research for Iranian students in certain disciplines and programs. Because we must ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the University has determined that it will no longer admit Iranian national students to specific programs in the College of Engineering (i.e., Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering) and in the College of Natural Sciences (i.e., Physics, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Polymer Science & Engineering) effective February 1, 2015."

This isn't banning people of Iranian descent from the program, but banning Iranian Nationals.

This sounds like one of those stories where everyone get's worked up but don't know what the policy has historically been.

Me, I need more info.

I know Iranian science students have more restrictive visas that other Iranian students.

Like once they're here, they can't leave the country and re-enter. Others have multiple entrance visas

iranian nationals, not (presumably) iranian americans or iranian brits or what have you.

i'm not aware of any wave of anti-persian sentiment. seems like a specific policy directed at a specific country.

they are not arabs, but i'm sure US policy has been different toward Iraqi nationals (back in the day) versus Saudis (which is prolly unfortunate).

i doubt anybody w/ a birth certificate from pyongyang gonna waltz up in UMASS and sign up for Nuclear Engineering next semester, either.

i just dont see what Iran has done to warrant that action.

Has there been any evidence of them developing their uranium enrichment program for hostile purposes (if we ignore the usual israeli moans of displeasure)

and even if they are, so what? i almost believe nuclear balancing would bring stability, crazy as it sounds...

" According to recent reports from the IMF and World Bank, Iran has nearly halved its 40 percent plus inflation rate, is stabilizing its previously plummeting currency, and is projected for positive growth after losing 6-7 percent in GDP between 2012 and 2014,” Dubowitz wrote."

Iran isnt *that much* of a rogue state as much as the media wants us to believe

is UMASS prohibiting Saudi's from doing the same? Pakistanis? Egyptians?

i think its suspect, big bro.

UMass' decisions on how to comply w/ said policy.

>i just dont see what Iran has done to warrant that action.

don't make a difference. US sanctions vs iraq were bullshit. US sanctions vs cuba are UBER bullshit. but it is what it is.

company i work for cannot ship or sell certain things to certain countries b/c that is the law.

it's not my company's doing. somebody eff around and sell the wrong hardware or software to one of these countries they going to JAIL.

eff israel (as a political entity and distorter of foreign and domestic policy). but it is what it is. they can spy on us and do all kinds of shit. fact is they not on a prohibited list because there is no law to that effect.

>and even if they are, so what? i almost believe nuclear
>balancing would bring stability, crazy as it sounds...

meh. i think so, too but it ain't happening. no time soon.

all that is immaterial. the law singles out iran (and, i assume, NK). and there's another shit list that china is on for encryption and supercomputers.

egypt and pakistan were allies.

pakistan got the bomba (c) adventure time while the US was busy using them as a front in the war v. afghanistan.

>i think its suspect, big bro.

to play blue eyed devil's advocate, if you have defined xyz country as a mortal enemy, you probably do NOT want them going to school in YOUR country and studying nuclear engineering.

all facts, i just used those examples bc we have far more evidence of those countries being implicitly involved in funding/aiding terrorism.

Yeah it sounds crazy but actually isn't, when I recall Kruschev's rhetoric. It was as bad as what we hear today but we made it through. We would have never gotten Purple Rain without the tension though in retrospect.

these kids aren't policy makers & have little or no part their government's actions.

its unfortunate though, and the Iranian government has to shoulder the blame for some of this (bigoted) backlash against its foreign bound students.

"these kids aren't policy makers & have little or no part their government's actions."

or the citizens of Russia.
nevertheless, sanctions are intended to indirectly and directly pressure foreign governments into action.

this certainly seems egregious, but i understand the logic of it.
I'm curious whether there has been an explicit directive from the government in this regard, to make a private actor treat foreign students this way.
