Dope looking job right? There is no use for me even bothering to apply. I'd never get it because they will find someone with that exact experience.

Now imagine if that job was in Richmond, VA. I might apply then because you never know. It's unlikely they would find someone with that sort of experience so in Richmond you'd take what you can get. Heck the job description in Richmond would just be "Lawyer". But because it's in NYC, they can be so specific with the description.

If you're discussing hyper-competitive fields with limited opportunities clustered specifically in that city, then yes, it's going to be hyper-competitive.

like i said below - it's like me stunting that if i can make it Chicago, Illinois i can OBVIOUSLY make it in Rockford. and that ppl from Decatur, Illinois just can't understand what it takes to make it here.

but i'd sound kinda silly saying that about Sydney, Australia. so i don't.

it makes sense.

i'll rule out madrid and london for the special (un?)spoken class system thing i heard about

not that we dont have a class system here

but its (used to be?) penetrable here
LA...
how the houses are built and the car culture
its harder
or...different?

but the i've had friend move there and um...they seem to be doing their thing

we really do have the rich and famous walking around here
accessible on a regular basis
so thats one thing i guess

it puts the hustle on a totally different level i think

for MOST industries NY is more competitive than anywhere else
besides the sheer NUMBER of people here, this city also attracts the best and brightest, unlike other big cities that are just...big.

i don't think people who fail out here would nec. "make it" other places
but if you can make it here, most other cities should be a cakewalk for you

In response to Reply # 9

Sticking to the entertainment biz for the purposes of this...

NYC is a center of the entertainment business along with London, L.A and a handful of other cities worldwide. If you "make it" outside of these places, you're likely to only be big on a local scale... I'd argue that doesn't actually constitute "making it" on anywhere near the same level.

Competition is higher, but standards are higher too. The person who became a local hero in Greensboro doesn't necessarily have the quality to become a hero nationally or globally... but a person that becomes a local hero in NYC probably does.

You can earn and live well anywhere; I don't think that's in dispute. I thought the OP was asking if you can get to the top of the pile in NYC, does that qualify you for top of the pile elsewhere and does the reverse work too?

I've worked for major banks in London for the last 10 years and 'breaking in' was the most difficult bit when I moved from Bristol despite having worked in financial services there too (equiv Richmond > NYC move, I guess) - if I were to go back to Bristol, I'm pretty confident I'd walk straight into any financial services organisation and, within reason, pick my salary just because of the 'glamorous' and 'trusted' companies that are now on my resume.

My take is that if you're an executive at Goldman Sachs on Wall Street you can send your CV to any other bank in the world and your foot is already in the door.

If you're an executive at Capital One in Richmond, you're going to have to prove yourself a bit further if you want that job at Goldman.

The "NYC homeless dude = another town's business owner" is sensationalist bull though.

There are more opportunities in NYC than most other cities. It's easier to meet people who are in a position to help you because "influencers" are more accessible.

NYC also has CUNY which is an INVALUABLE resource...low cost, non-selective institutions that actually provide a quality education. CUNY is a big part of the reason that NYC has such high upward mobility.

I'm not talking about elite schools. I'm talking about good schools that accept almost everybody. Peasants aren't going to National Autonomous University of Mexico unless they're exceptional. Any nigga who gets a hs diploma or GED has a shot at a decent education at a CUNY school and it won't cost them much.

it's easier for a person of humble beginnings to move up a class or two without being exceptional in NYC than in most other American cities. Easier than in London or Seoul too. Can't speak on the rest of the world.

i hear this mostly from hrm
people who have "made it" elsewhere
thought they knew how things worked here
turns out they didn't
maybe not hard but different?

but if you fall on your ass here
it can get very ugly very quick with out a support system
so maybe that level of hard

i thought about being homeless in santa monica or in the carib
the food grows on trees
and the weather is awesome
i am doing the grass is greener thing though

if your connections are tight, doors will be open for you even if you aren't qualified. There are a ton of opportunities. They just close very swiftly. Its usually a connection that will get you noticed in the 1st place.

If your connections aren't together, you could be the most qualified dude in history, but no one is even going to see your resume.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

when it comes to more creative endeavors? yes
but there is a chance to break through without connections. it just will take longer and require you to start at the very bottom

there are lots of stories of folks who are now well known in their field but started at the bottom

i see those folks. cats you saw working stock at a sneaker store now producing their own gear

but there's always that person also making their own clothes but didn't have to go that route b/c they knew the right people

but if you can make it in Singapore, can you make it in NYC?

factors like industry and competitive do matter of course but generally speaking if you are trying to be the peak in many fields, NYC is the place to go even if there may be another city that may have an edge in a particular industry

a place like Hong Kong is rife with transplants. seems like someone from NYC would do just fine there as far as potentially having the experience desired and even just the ability to transfer as they already work for that firm and want to work in a branch office. that was the original question, no?

Houston or Riyadh is probably the better move but again, i didn't deny that industry isn't a factor. depending on where in oil you want to work, NYC might be the place. or Alaska might be the place.

>>a place like Hong Kong is rife with transplants. seems like

>as a foreigner. being a New Yorker is enough.

lots of foreign offices of banks require english. i worked for a german bank. didn't have to learn german. they had HK offices too and calling them up for things wasn't a problem communication-wise. i would imagine a new yorker trying to work internationally would either aim for a company where a second language wasn't a high priority or they would have that language under their belt already. just like if someone from Tokyo wanted a NY job, they may be skilled enough where they can accept the lack of language skills, or they may have to just learn english

i have a friend in fashion and she wanted to work in Paris so homegirl learned french and moved there and worked in fashion. not easy but possible and especially possible because she was coming from NYC. if she was coming from london with the same credentials i'm sure that could have worked out for her as well as London also has a large fashion scene but i don't think saying that if you can make it in NYC you can make it everywhere necessarily means that the same can't be done in these other cities you are mentioning.

overall there are places that are better than NYC to be but that depends on the industry and your aspirations within that. however, speaking generally there can be an advantage to starting out and reaching a certain level in NYC and either trying your hand at a US city or an equally large foreign city. there's the competition aspect, there's the amount of firms aspect (especially those that only have US offices in NYC-if you want to do a head-to-head with a foreign city), there's the overall perception that NYC folks work/hustle harder. not to say that doesn't exist in paris or london or tokyo but that's not really what they are known for.

It's this assumption that I am discussing because frankly that's the real option that I would consider. I don't see the point of just going to that short list of cities that are just as competitive.

as long as everyone understands that NYC isn't as special as everyone seems to think it is. that much of what's said to be uniquely NYC is just common megalopolis stuff. and that what makes NYC feel so special is that most of us have only been in ONE megalopolis like that. so to us it's more special than it is w/in the broader context.

I think it was the only place rap music could have been born because it was a place where high culture, low culture, rich and poor use to converge and cross pollinate. You could go into clubs and see all sorts of people dancing and listening to rap, new wave, punk all under one roof (at least that's the stories my inlaws tell me).

I think that's mostly done as the city stratifies into classes and people stay in their separate corners. It's now probably as segregated as Dallas.

i realized you shouted out brooklyn internationally someone from brooklyn was at that party

i mean everywhere

i translated this to mean
the 6 degress of kevin bacon thing
works for most NYr's
so yeah ft lauderdale or miami might be easy
but yes odds are most people from other parts of the world
have lived or know someone who has lived in NY
the sheer volume of people
and people yes move abroad regularly

the 6 degrees of seperation on this site alone is a bit scary
just ramp it up for NY

and finding folks with that little bit in common yes helps

and i say that having grown up in the city, and left with that *nyc>everything* attitude.

now, i think i have a more balance perspective.

obviously, if you are successful in NYC, thats a big thing

but the biggest problem i have, is with those newyorkers that think you cant *handle it* because you either chose to leave or if you are complaining about nyc

the real estate is a prime example...now, if you want to spend $3000 a month to live in a shoebox, kudos to you....just understand that there are people in other parts of the country that spend half that, and own actual property, in metropolitan areas no less, with space for their kids and room to grow...*some* nyers shit on those people like *yeah, but you cant get blahblahblah in wherethefuckever*

maybe not, but you really shouldnt fault someone for prioritizing things differently than you.

i was in new york two weeks ago..bronx, harlem, village, bk, queens, westchester...i finally realized there was nothing there for me anymore, nothing holding me to it. im not shitting on anyone that chooses to live there, but i often wonder if a lot of these folks just stay there cuz they dont wanna admit defeat, i wonder if they realize that there are tons of alternatives to the nyc struggle

nyc and rtp, nc...he spent the majority of his time here but would go bk and forth and graduated highschool up there. hes down with the dreads and a very wise cat...we spend time building on just life shit in general. one day we were talking and he was like he was thinking about moving bk to ny because he kinda wanted to raise his kids up there (4 kids) because of the socialization aspect. he was like raising them up there would make them stronger ppl because they would know how to deal with constantly being around lots of ppl (more outgoing), competition, dealing with hustle and bustle, etc. i thought it an interesting perspective and couldnt really argue with his rationale as it kinda made sense in certain ways. any thoughts?

I grew up in a very rural area which wasn't that competitive. So I felt like one of the baddest dudes alive growing up. I got to play all the sports I wanted in High School (basketball, track, tennis), I was top of my class academically, and I did all sorts of extracurricular stuff.

Leaving that environment I felt like the main and had a willingness to try anything and had lots of confidence.

I compare that to kids who grow up in NYC and there are so many smart kids here and specilized schools and it seems like your self-esteem can take a beating.

Now if you are a competitive person, then all that good comptetion can build you up. If you are not a competitive person, it seems like it can beat you down.

i guess one way of looking at is that even with all of the competition and specialized schools etc...if u can be at the top of your class or excel in those environments then even as a youth the original statement in question might hold true...if a kid was doing good in a specialized school up there and he moved to another school in most places theres a good chance he or she would excel it mgt seem

Are you asking if NYC is the most difficult city in which to reach the top of your field? Because the answer is that it's probably just as difficult in any global city.

Are you asking about the rank and file bettering themselves (the homeless guy reference in the OP)? I think NYC is probably a little bit easier than other global cities.

there are industries ppl move to nyc specifically for
because that's where the opportunity is
but i think it's true across the board
and it seems like one of those cities where you can get by on "hustling"
which may or may not be a real skill depending on the specifics
anecdotally, i know ppl who weren't doing shit in PA and went to NYC and at least stabilized
because it's an environment where at the very least you can fake it till you make it

I hear all the time, "If you can make it in Mississippi, you can make it anywhere."

I chalk that up to it being the poorest state in the nation. To being in towns with
very few jobs, under paying jobs (we don't even have minimum wage) no public transit,
poor education, over priced housing, politicians who refuse to expand medicaid, etc.

I think if you're struggling to make it, but you're surviving somehow, then
probably you're a fighter. And you would make it somehow anywhere, because you'd fight.

But that's just my take on it. That's what I tell myself anyway.

i do feel like having survived Chicago's extreme winter and summer temps for 20 yrs i can live in any climate.

but i haven't spent enough time near the equator or either of the poles to be really for real w/that.

and like St. Petersburg's winter would probably kick my ass. as would Death Valley in summer.

still...the lie i tell myself as i survive this awful weather is that this is making me HEARTY. and that those fools who live in places w/easier weather aren't made of the stuff i'm made of. LOL

fuck you.

My friends who were neurologists (I know two, unrelated, which is weird in itself) made their bones here, one at NYU, the other at Columbia. The NYU grad moved out west with his future husband, and based on his work experience and CV, ended up as fellow of neurology at a reasonably prestigious school on the coast, and is currently their chair of pain management. He's just turning 35.

The other neurologist I knew landed his first-post residency (I don't think I'm using 'residency' correctly -- it was his specialty residency? it wasn't just general medicine) heading up a department at a large university in the midwest.

My guy who is a chef lived out here and worked in Soho, the Village, Tribeca -- currently head chef at a restaurant in LA, and has been written up numerous times.

My cousin's husband graduated from Stern, leveraged his connections from the first ten years on Wall Street, is now managing a 3.8 bln hedge fund in LA.

The way it has been described to me -- by outsiders, not native New yorkers -- is that you start here. New York has a broad, deep, substantial talent pool. It's not totally unique, obviously there are plenty of cities that cultivate talent and smart people. But New York has a volume and diversity that is rare. It makes it particularly competitive, no matter what your career path is. So you start here, live hard, and celebrate elsewhere. People who are self-starters, who have the aggression and ambition to really move in those circles, have a genuine edge.

Education, we have everything from CUNY to Columbia to the new Cornell-Technion campus on Roosevelt Island, to FIT/SVA/Pratt (none of the caliber of RISD or MICA, but still very good art schools), to John Jay. We are second to Silicon Valley in startups and venture capital. We are a center of global fashion. Most major publishing, advertising, finance and legal venues have at least outposts if not headquarters (only Houston comes second, I believe, in terms of Fortune 500 companies). More TV shows and movies film here than LA. We attract the best. There was a very VERY long time when we didn't. And it's not to say we'll be able to even five years from now.

But right now, if it's your temperament, you can immerse yourself in some of the most competitive communities in the world, and it will reflect itself in your work ethic.

At least if they're truly upwardly mobile.

Am I using 'flock' right?

What I was trying to get across is that the 'if you can make it here you can make it anywhere' ethic is basically that New York is -- for some people -- a starter kit, where they can refine their talents in a very competitive environment among some of the best in their class, and that's not unique itself to New York so much as the breadth of those classes: create, legal, financial, fashion, healthcare, entertainment, technological; etc. Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Columbus -- all have that going for them as well, but not in the same density or variety. The value of New York's pace and demands tend to translate into salary and clout. And when people are done here, they move on to markets where they can live in a way that perhaps more suits their ambitions, and leverage their experiences in a way that really capitalizes on them more fully.

The rich go wherever they want and the poor stay where they are.

'Upwardly mobile' go where they can, and that is often places with a backyard and a private driveway.

the only reason i ask is because i see that youre saying that there are lots of other metro areas both here and abroad, but most of them cant make the claims that mongo mentioned...is it that its hard for you to admit or do u really just outright disagree?

id have struggled to live in nyc when i wasnt qualified
there are numerous opportunities to make it
and once you do, it does open up doors elsewhere
but i think its harder to start and move up
just becuase there is so much competition.
and making it implies that you do have an edge that easily translates to wherever else in the world you choose to work (i guess)

but you are right in one sense
once you make it in nyc... its easy to make it elsewhere
i dont know if the converse would be true necessarily
making it elsewhere and that translating to easy success in nyc

but i dont know
if i ever decide to live permanently in the u.s
nyc is definitely high up on the list of cities i would live in.

That's why all of the major sports were created and perfected there. So much competition. No other place has competition. They just lay down for everything in Mumbai, for example. All nice and orderly at markets and on trains. So much civility everywhere but NYC. So unique that way, nyc.

Spread that news!

What I would consider good quality of life there. Most ppl I kno there seem to be surviving or may have a good/decent career but as far as a great lifestyle, IMO, they aren't "making it"

Paying 3500 a month for a one bedroom in a nice area is not something I envy

But yeah I'm fine with that statement, but not in the badge of honor most New York residents probably look at it as

prototype

stand ur ground, believe in urself,
believe in love, prepare urself for love, remove the negativity from ur life, and accept the love u kno u deserve

thankfully i have a one bedroom in a nice area (though the last trap building in the area lol) for way less than half that amount

but i can't say i'm rare but not as common as i wish it would be, hence working my butt off in affordable housing

if you have what it takes to make it in NY, you can make it anywhere domestically. make it meaning not survive living in a room in Hell's Kitchen, but truly excelling and thriving in your field.

Im from there and I wasn't willing to find out if I could make it. I dont like big crowds and rude people suffering PTSD from their daily existence and the cost of living was dumb

LA has challenges (most of all me not driving) but I think there's a greater chance of me "making it" one day out here, and if not I'll settle for a decent day job so long as I can stack money. I've already exceeded a lot of my former expectations.

but yeah comparing NY to international places that no one dreams about moving to just to disprove the popular saying is disingenuous, if not mildly retarded

so pretending you're holding that sort of substantive data is well...disingenuous

but take a person who lives "nowhere" with dreams of moving "somewhere", the first thought isn't Atlanta, DC, Philly, Chicago, or Houston. It's NY or LA

most people dont dream of moving from "nowhere" to somewhere international for the same reasons you already presented, the culture of other countries and continents can be tougher to get used to than NY

so yeah, if you can make it in NY you can make it anywhere else in the USA with a similar (or easier) culture

but I get that arguing ridiculous points is your "thing".

your cousins had their sights set lower. nowhere did I say or imply "everyone wants to move to NY". also Atlanta is "somewhere" compared to Alabama, but Tallahassee is "the city" compared to Thomasville, GA

What makes them important is that they're DECENT schools, that cater to adult learners as much as traditional students, and and almost anyone can be accepted to one CUNY school or another. CUNY's combination of accessibility and quality what makes it special

There are currently a QUARTER OF A MILLION student enrolled at CUNY schools. THAT is how upward mobility is created.

Your figure was the entire CCC population, including certificates and GED. I was referring to the 270k enrolled in gegree programs. If you're looking at the entire population, CUNY is over 500k.

Also, unlike CCC, the CUNY schools are decent 5 of the colleges are ranked in the top-100 Northeastern schools by US News and World Report. None of the CCC schools rank in . You can graduate from Baruch and go to Wall Street. You probably aren't going to the commodities exchange coming out of Harry Truman or Malcolm X.

Like I said, cheap, non-selective colleges that provide a decent education. No city comes close to NYC in that respect.

and US News is not a trustworthy source of information for higher education. Pointing out that you can go from Baruch to Wall Street really doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of assessing student learning at public institutions of higher education. By sheer virtue of being in NYC alone, a graduate from any college or university in the metro-NYC area can go to Wall Street.

You're completely missing the point. It's not about simply havign a goot public university system. All of the systems you named shit all over CUNY, but they're spread all over the state and include many selective schools. They're traditional state systems.

There is not another city in America that has five decent non-selective public colleges, all of which are accessible by mass transit, many of which cater to non-traditional students.

SF is well covered by public colleges and universities, so is Philly, Boston, Seattle, most major cities have plenty of public options. And frankly, not all of the programs at the CUNY schools are good. They may have quality individual programs that are reputable. It would be inaccurate to claim that NYC is particularly special in this regard.

SF has one public school that offers bachelors degrees: SFSU

Boston has two: MassArt and UMass Boston. They have a combined 18k students

Washington has one, the state's flagship university. Not going to help the rank and file.

Philly has one: Temple

CUNY is special because it's a university with the accessibility of a community college system.

UMass Lowell is roughly the same size as Boston and right within distance. Philly has two Penn State campuses - Brandywine and Abington - we are talking about research production that outclasses CUNY by a country mile. The defense department's contracts with Penn State are probably greater than all of CUNY's research expenditures. I can't believe this even a real argument.

but yes, USNWR says CUNY schools are among the best remedial colleges in that part of the country.

i don't agree that attending a CUNY school offers an opportunity to move up a class. not w/all we know about how often ppl end up fucked after getting a degree.

do we know how many CUNY grads live in their parents' basement after graduation?

oh...there aren't basements in NYC! LOL. so i guess maybe they might live on their parent's roof? or porch?

I would say that 90% of the time, if you can become successful in your field in NY, you can do the same anywhere else...especially the competitive fields. But it's surely about your connections...and it's like, NY has a much higher level that can be attained.

Only thing that I would say goes against this statement is that the overall NY attitude may not work in other cities, especially smaller cities, where being more aggressive or even blunt/rude may not help out as much. And that would surely depend on your occupation.

When it comes to most middle class quality of life standards.

That said no because you can speak no english and run a business in new york. A whole lot of immigrants would be screwed if you dropped them elsewhere. There are a lot of benefits if you're international or ethnic or have a niche product or service. A lot of things there simply are no demand for elsewhere. And a lot of people would not thrive elsewhere.

Also a lot of people who are truly making it in Nw York aren't very bright. Most wall street types who were making hundress of thousands when I left were simply white males who were well connected. THey wouldn't be making it here. THey'd be construction workers. Here you need actual skills, like the ability to do brain surgery to make hundreds of thousands a year.

New York is also very very safe. Here teenage girls and kids getting off buses gets shot routinely. You can sell drugs and flip it into something legit. Try that here and you'll be dead or arrested before you're out of your teens. The safety and anonymity makes it easy to get rich doing shady shit.

Seems relevant:

http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/07/new-york-times-social-mobility-metropolitan-area

Researchers found that children born into the poorest 20 percent of households are least likely to end up in the top 20 percent of income earners (more than $70,000 by age 30) in the Southeast and the industrial Midwest. Upward mobility is particularly lacking in Memphis, Indianapolis, Atlanta, and Columbus.

Poor children are most likely to be able to work their way to an upper-income life in the Northeast, Great Plains and the West, including in cites such as New York, Boston, Salt Lake City, Pittsburgh, and Seattle.

saying that NYC puts you at a competitive advantage if you move to other cities doesn't negate that the same doesn't exist for foreign major cities or cities that have a better, more well-regarded specific industry presence than NYC

but this post wasn't about that.

nor was it about people from other cities not 'making it' because they don't live or never made it to live in NYC

but SoWhat gonna SoWhat so we just have to take it

if you want to claim that i'm upset about it, i'll be that. he seeks absolute proof and truth in a post that is clearly speculative with people's own opinions/anecdotes and gets dismissive but yet we're the problem. ok.

New York isn't some magical place that makes you better than the rest of the country. The homeless dude is New York city has better living conditions elsewhere because THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH. It's possible to see where this perspective comes from through cost of living and competition for jobs. However, why would someone want to put themselves under that much pressure? If 50K gives me a better life in Atlanta, Minneapolis, Portland, or Detroit then why go through the headache of moving to NY to make it?

LOL at people rating NY higher in order to justify cost of living and competition for careers.

In the meanwhile, just enjoy being able to walk room-to-room without leaving your own apartment, having money in savings and the ability to travel and enjoy the place that you're at without constantly comparing it to where you live.

:-p

I need the exact time stamp and difference between Oakland and everywhere else in the USA.
