"the thing I didn't expect about growing old (er)"
Mon Feb-16-15 10:11 PM by janey

I never thought about the fact that I would see athletes go from college to pro to commentator or how old that would make me feel.

I see you Shane Battier.

The first was Marcus Allen. When I heard he retired it was like vertigo.

We saw a play recently in which one character dared others to name prizefighters. They named a bunch and he said "they were all 20 years ago! " hold up 20 years? Evander Holyfirld was a little kid at the Olympics oh yeah that was 84...

He played on the same team with my cousin, Archie Tullos, and 'nem back when he was in high school.

Dude went from NCAA, to the NBA, to CBA, and several European leagues to head coach for Binghamton University, to fired from that job.

shit made me realize how fuckin old I am...

I googled Fennis Dembo once upon a time... And it dawned on me that he was on that Sports Illustrated cover waaaaaaaaay back in '87.

Go through all these stages. Eric crouch another heisman winner did it too in the span of less than 5 years. He's from my state and I saw him run at the state track meet when I was a freshman and he was a senior.

I feel old every time i see her the way i lusted after Lisa Bonet on the Cosby Show as a kid. Now her kid who wasn't even born then is doing her thing.

Also i was watching Sportscenter recently and they showed a college bball game with Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton sitting on the sidelines talking to each other. They were there to see their SONS play each other.

I felt old as shit.

and the barber refers to Mike Tyson as "that new boy that looks like a bulldog," then I realize Mike has pretty much been known for everything except boxing for almost 2o years now.
Also, The Cosby Show ended 23 years ago, and started 31 years ago. That's pretty crazy to think about in perspective because it makes me think about where I was in my life and thinking then, and where I am now.
Quite a ride.

Me and a patna was sitting around having a convo about if you go to any college or university's athletics site and check their football team's roster, you could always find at least one player from either Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana or all five. I went to Auburn's site and for some reason the first name I clicked on was a freshman from Florida named Tre Mason. I decided to read his bio and learned who his dad was and I told my homie that I immediately had to take a break from the internet cuz I feel old as shit right now.

I remember when "3 Feet High and Rising" first dropped. I think I had just started high school and I believe them dudes was just outta high school themselves.

When WVU beat KU, some kid took his shirt off. I thought, "That boy better put his shirt back on." I can't even allow myself to lust after college athletes or even most of the pro ones cuz they're all hella young.

...really sucks.

With basketball, I'm older than every "active" player except Steve Nash, who hasn't really "been" active since last season. I can live with that, because a good deal of this group of players came into the league between 18 and 21.

In football, I'm older than everyone except three kickers. I can also live with that, because those players come into the league between the ages of 21 and 22, and the sport is so damaging that most don't stay around that long.

Baseball was the worst, because even if a player gets drafted out of high school, they spend a while in the minors (like three or four years at least). And you can stick around a lot longer, bumming around from team to team. At first, I was older than everyone except the left-handed relievers and the power-hitting DHs. Then just the DHs. Now it's everyone. There's the occasional crafty starting pitcher (like Bartolo Colon) or set-up man that's older than me, but yeah, I'm older than everyone else. As a result, Jason Giambi retiring yesterday hit me pretty hard. Ditto wtaching Ichiro go from scourage of the League to signing a one-year deal with the Marlins.

This was when Ewing Jr. was there and they were making a run in the NCAA tourney. My buddy and I are watching it getting hype and I yell he's doing his daddy proud. My boy was like 'Who's Patrick Ewing?" I nearly slugged him until I realized he was born after the '84 NCAA win. I realized I was old and had young friends, making me feel even older.
