talk about an actress who is underrated, underseen, woefully underused in films AND television and all that...

she is PERFECTLY CAST as Aminata Diallo. Just owns every scene she is in, which basically ALL of them save for the first episode when Aminata is a little girl.

I can't wait to see the rest of the miniseries...

#Actually it's a co-production.
CBC (Canada) came on board first and put up some dough for it but BET and a South African broadcaster foot the rest of the bill. According to the author and producer at a talk I went to last year to launch the series.

#1
as i put wildchild down to sleep
i felt compelled with thanks
thankful that i am able to raise my child
thankful that i know where she is
thankful that she knows me
so many things we take for granted
especially as a black person
just watching this show
just made me appreciate the time that i live in

#2
yo i NEVER learned about the british freeing slaves
like blacks felt more safe with the british in control
WOW
i never knew that
we just learn that the british were bad
and no taxation without representation
i need to do more research
that part of last night's episode blew my mind
that is an integral part of our history
how the black felts about the making of america
and the departure of the british
shoot even how the jews treated blacks and slaves

it "seems" more focus on aboriginals
but its typical northern racism

its still systematic

I think one would want to leave regardless. She could have been in Amish country and still been thinking these folks aren't safe to be around. My point being that although racist-- by the time she got to NS there wouldn't have been much tolerance for any kind of racism period.

It's kind of fascinating. I wonder what made fighting for America seem more promising?

why didn't she hug soloman lindo at the end?
i mean she said thank you

but i just feel like
through everything
he always tried to do right by her
even when he purchased her and her daughter
he tried to give them a better life
he taught her accounting etc

it just was weird to me
how could she forgive and love her husband
but not lindo?

40. "lindo was stuck between a rock and a hard place"
In response to Reply # 37

like chehura

lindo was a jew
he wasnt that respected due to that
so he had to play a game that
he didnt want to play
so he played it in a way that he didnt
look like a traitor
basically he was a spy

i could actually see his character
part of the underground railroad
he did the best he could
given the consequences

i think that he has always tried to do right by
aminata
she just couldnt see it because she was so hurt by
his dishonesty

In response to Reply # 40

and I think that was Aminata's whole thing.
though you said you gave us both a better life, why not be forthcoming if that was your true intention?

He most certainly worked the circumstance to his favor.
Not hers.
He wanted her as a servant because of his wife.
The best way to do so was to separate her from her child.
In doing so she could focus solely on his wife and her pregnancy.

46. "i kept thinking "this is a good story""
In response to Reply # 0

don't get me wrong, this was really well done.

i think i'm just tired of the good stories. they tug at the heartstrings and then make you feel good about it. fuck that.

pretty much every situation aminata managed to get out of was one faced by thousands if not tens of thousands of others and the result was utter shit. that's the reality i want to see on screen. no redeming white character that makes all the other atrocities okay. nah i want the utter sense of hopelessness that lasts for four centuries.
