Assumning we don't continue our RAMPANT over consumption, there is MORE than enough space AND resources to accomodate our population and quite a bit more. Check this out. The whole of the earth's population could live in Texas.

I don't see the western consumers rowing back on overconsumption any time soon. So as the numbers grow, and the consumption exponentially increases, etc.

It boils down to my basic lack of faith in humanity, lol.

Our first radio wave transmissions are well over 100 light years away and have already passed probably 6 or 7 hundred solar systems. We've been essentially broadcasting where we are since the late 1800's. If Aliens existed in that range and had the will and technology to come here to evaporate us they would have already done that or they are already on their way but just haven't gotten here yet.

Now these bammas playing billiards with pions, gluons and such, who aren't quite sure what the fuck they're doing are the ones we need too worry about.

Basically what we've broadcast thus far hasn't made it past our doorstep yet.

if an alien species has enough technology to get to us over 200 light years away, we don't need to broadcast shit to them. They already know exactly where we are without our help.

But what if they don't. What if they are only a couple decades ahead of us, or exactly where we are. But a few thousand light years away. Essentially we're both trying to get our tech to the point where we can reach the other.

Hmmmm....

In response to Reply # 0

on the list.

Singularity meaning the achievement of true artificial machine intelligence. with the end of the world being T minus however long it takes a really really smart computer to figure out that humans are the ones fucking everything up.

the grey goo nanotech option is if we create self-replicating nanobots that somehow acquire a taste for other than what they are initially programmed to consume, such that they consume all organic matter on the planet (or, say, all metals, or all of whatever enough to make our current way of life unsustainable).

i think the above two scenarios have potential to murk mankind in the next 100 yrs.

if you are talking geologic time, climate change may move up in the rankings. and i'm sure there's an asteroid with our name on it.

the LHC is concerning, in a science fictiony way.

SETI or METI -- not so much. but only b/c it's probably hubris to think that us yelling 'helloooo out into the galaxy' is any more of a tipoff to a sentient race than the shit we already do by accident.

big ass campfire on Amon Hen letting anyone know where we at.

what if we got tipped off that some civilization was about to pick us up and the whole earth had to turn off its lights, so to speak, like back in the day when whole towns would turn off their lights to avoid giving targets to bombing runs during WWII?

whole civilization dependent upon whether everyone can stay off they phones for a week. speaking for self, my 16 yo would kill the planet in a heartbeat. "oh, you meant don't check Instagram either?"

( ( ((((( blaoooowwww ) ))))) )))

peace & blessings,

Grey goo...

Assuming the singularity happens, I can't imaging grey goo taking too much more time than that, assuming we haven't already cracked it at that point.

I'm 35, My first computer experience (The Oregon Trail, on a Tandy) happened around 10/11. Major internet, including OKP around 19 - Myspace/facebook in my twenties/ pocket sized computers of HIGHER computer power (by magnitudes) than what I first used (again, Oregon Trail on a Tandy) by the time I hit my late twenties.

You see where this is going. I'm excited/and terrified by the rate of our progress.

and in part cpu science is heading there because the Hive mind on computing is taking over. Hive = Fb, the cloud, Wiki. that was not the intent of Web 1.0

Folk really should resist Hive and singularity thinking like we resist religion now. it's not an innate, inevitable reality

it really would take an amazing feat of computer programming for singularity to be achieved, and Moore's law will actually hit is peak within 20 years, which would make the singularity very difficult

physical evidence to confirm the Higgs boson and field, and to further other studies of of unsolved physic's claims, it feels an awful lot like men of prestige playing dress up for theory.

there are IMHO, just more pressing global matters, (and I'm not talking geopolitical war shit either) that the amount of money that has and will go into the LHC, could be used for
