My whole life, I've been told that the statue of liberty represented the freedom America offered immigrants from Europe. It's been intrinsically linked with Ellis Island, poor, huddled white folk in rags. That's been the narrative, right?

Wrong. The Statue of Liberty celebrates the emancipation of the slaves. She wears chains and shackles on her feet. Originally, the chains were supposed to ho all the way up to the book, but the project went over budget, and the French weren't going to fork any more cash. The US government picked up the rest of the tab, under the condition that they tone the chains down.
