They should have cut that California sketch in half and did something more with Murphy or the originals.

His One Night Only on Spike was the same thing. I just don't think he gives a fuck. He's probably scared on some level. He's so admired and loved, and he can't go back to that place in his career ever again. He's never gonna do stand up because he doesn't have the ability to work out an act by failing. It's actuallly kinda sad...but I mean, only for his fans.

out of the park. Chris Rock did all the heavy lifting and nostalgic pieces, Chris Rock served him up a softball and Eddie Murphy struck out. Very sad because I was hoping this would set up an Eddie Murphy come back but it just looks like he doesn't want to come back and just wants to retire with his trophy piece.

I think u guys are thinking too hard on this one....

Before the show Eddie did an interview about coming back to SNL just last week. And he gave up the ghost early saying that he would not be in any sketches and was just happy to be back.

Sad isn't the word. It's simple: dude was on self exile from SNL. He had REAL beef with L. Michaels and has refused to ever step foot onstage there. So Murphy even coming back was an achievement in itself....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Eddie just being there was a big deal in and of itself. he's been pissed with SNL dissing him back in the 90's (i think he referenced a David Spade skit that trashed one of his movies or something). he felt like he was one of them and shouldn't have been attacked like that. that's why he never showed up for the 25th anniversary special. so we should be happy that he even showed up.

plus maybe he feels awkward around SNL peeps b/c he was on the show during the only period when Lorne wasn't producing. there's an asterisk on that era. plus his fame was a bit of a problem for several of his castmates while he was on the show - especially Joe Piscopo.

but anyway, i hope his appearance last night means he'll perform on the show in the future.

fuck you.

Yeah...let's take it down a bit, homie....

Eddie coming back was big with in itself....Read up on the history...

In the '90s u didn't see any hit jobs or jokes about SNL alumni on that level...But Eddie was a target...

So imagine....U were the one person (Eddie Murphy) that literally saved SNL. If not for u SNL would have ended by 1980....Throw in race (Eddie being one of the handful of black talents to be involved in a show that has historically been tilted to the VERY white-Second City-Yale-Harvard clique) and the fact that Eddie became the the biggest star from SNL?...That's some real explosive shit...

Murphy felt like SNL owed him more. A lot more. U rarely saw SNL giving shade to the movie bombs that were being made by SNL stars....And if they did it was really playful...Not mean spirited like Spade...

But Eddie was an easy target to a generation that had no idea that he saved that show.....Yeah...he had a reason to be crossed.....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Yes Eddie saved SNL and maybe he's the biggest star of the show. But during his reign Lorne Michaels wasn't under control, if he was I think he woulda kept Eddie on a short leash and he wouldn't have blown up they way he did. Lorne Michaels seems like he wants black performers to only play the side role and not the lead, definitely not the star of the show.

Yep...And u basically underlined the beef between Lorne and Eddie....

Eddie felt that Lorne never respected his impact on SNL because it was done when Michaels was off the show...But when the Eddie jabs started coming his way in the '90s it was under Lorne's watch....

Like I said, Murphy showing up was a HUGE first-step. There was talk that he would never walk on that set again...Hell he telegraphed his appearance when he said just days before the special that he wouldn't be in any sketches....Dude is just getting use to the idea of being a part of that SNL family again....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Eddie took it too personally and blamed Lorne for the joke b/c as he understood it Lorne approved all of the show's content. and since Eddie never worked w/Lorne on SNL i'm not sure they have a personal relationship. so maybe Lorne didn't feel much allegiance to Eddie.

but no matter, i hope whatever rift there was is smoothed and now Eddie will perform on the show in the future.

fuck you.

i read the SNL book: Live from New York so here's my thoughts on this intriguing beef:

1. Lorne hates those 'Eddie years' because to him it was a one man show not an ensemble effort for laughs, which is why HE BOUGHT THE RIGHTS AND NEVER PUTS THOSE YEARS IN SYNDICATION EVER.
2. friends and early collaborators Keenan & Robert Townsend were castoff the show, always thought Garret Morris sketches were demeaning = EDDIE THINKS SNL DON'T FUCK WITH BLACK COMICS FOR REAL
3. till this day Lorne still thinks john belushi is the funniest to ever come out of SNL
4. spade's 'falling star' barb was the tip of the iceberg

*he also didn't wanna play Cosby on the 'celebrity jeopardy' sketch because, well....

He wants to dog out other folks artistry, yet he is on stage sounding like a fool trying to sing. Terrible!! His rendition of Jesus Walks was cool though.

Prince called it way back in 94'

See the rapper's problem usually stem from being tone deaf
Pack the house then try 2 sing,
there won't be no one left (ha ha) (on it)
Parking lot's on fire, brothers peelin' out of the town
They say in disgust, they singin' their guts
Rappin' done let us down (down down)
u got 2 be dead... on it

Dead on it

Have to say, the confidence necessary to do that in front of that crowd is remarkable. But how screwed up must it be to just be on a track with him, yet he's dressing you when you showup for a TV gig.

He had too much to drink, couldn't do it, so Eddie did it instead.

Thus spawned the line "Live from New York it's the Eddie Murphy Show!"

Just IMO though.

one could only assume you were speaking about *that stage* that they all performed on last night

doesn't fucking matter. you called him "the most successful comedian of all time"

I'm sure they probably wanted him to do Buckwheat and he politely declined.

without him that overrated Racist Butt show would have gone off the air 30 years back.

Chris Rock ain't nothing but a broke Eddie Murphy.

truth is Eddie sold a character and a role where it was huge for its time and it spoke for that time and he moved on.

he ain't had to prove nothing since 88. Eddie been where few Black Entertainers ever been and that also goes for Whites as well when you think about it because how many acts from the 80's still pulling in roles and counting?

Eddie is a Smart cat. and cats after him are in doubt to him period because he took cross over to a whole new level period.

before Him you had to share camara time with a un funny white dude and needed as a side kick. after Eddie broke through that kind of casting was done period.

to me he is Saturday Night Live and he turned that mother out and saved that cornball show from being yanked years ago,

It was so random but the highlight of the whole thing for me.

Californians is always great, as is the Jeopardy sketch so very happy to see those again, and awesome to see Sudeikis don the red tracksuit for Keenan.

This clip has scenes from Star Wars but it's got Bill singing the song over it. I can't find the actual clip which makes me think that NBC has a grip on it and shut it down from youtube.

One of my favorite things he did.

In response to Reply # 0

...the audience barely wanted to acknowledge Eddie.... most black cast members became bigger stars AFTER SNL....the Leslie Jones thing was REALLY unfunny, and seemed like pandering, although i think she IS funny in other instances...after watching the show, and reading this post, i have to admit that i really do beleive Lorne isn't interested in promoting anything not stereotypically "black", and i ain't mad cause he's an old successful white man, what else would he think? there just seemed to be little love for black cast members in general, but i understood, cause let's face it, other than Murphy, the funny from cast members of color is hit or miss...

i can't front though i'm always happy to see "What's up with that"....

oh, and y'all really mad about Eddie huh?? dude ain't put in enough great work to get a lifetime pass? really? dude ain't ever gotta try to be funny again to me....he really has NOTHING to prove....
