what i don't like is edited rap
like the clean version of profane raps. keep that shit.
but if it doesn't have curses and it sounds good i'm not caring
if it has curse words and it sounds good i'm not caring
i just want that shit to sound good!
it's funny 'cause i curse a LOT when i speak
but i barely curse when i rhyme.

in the AllStar pre-game.

i was rhyming right along w/ him (w/ the kids, watching), and i'd hit certain spots and me an nas saying different shit.

the rewrites were clever, but it got me to thinking how wild it was, because the whole subject matter of the song is kinda off limits.

'bulletholes left in my peepholes' <-NOPE
'sip some E & J sin and been up in the stairway' <-- NOPE
'i'm like scarface flippin cocaine' <- HELL NOPE
'holdin the m-16' <- NOPE

i started thinking about it after the fact and was like, dayum. when you take out drugs, guns, liquor and cussing (and the cussing is actually kinda mild on that) there ain't a whole lot left but the hook, and the piano loop.

peace & blessings,

Make your money, my nigga, get your money
But don't make the shit make you, now deal with that
I lost a whole bunch of money chasing bitches
But I never lost no bitches chasing money, how real is that?
Only time a woman made a man a millionaire
Was when that man was a former billionaire, how trill is that?
My nigga, get you a fly chick and a drop top
And when she piss you off, do me a favor
Hop in that bitch and peel it back
I already got one
All these bitches be doing is playing musical chairs
With different rappers' front seats without calling shotgun
Face it, you're a ho, as God as my witness
That paper's my litmus I take it then I dip with it
Then I wait for the result
And the verdict is in
Now that I'm sober niggas is saying it's over
Couple of niggas had to off 'em
Couple of bitches mad cause I'm off 'em
Either that or they think that my life is so good my nights be sunny
Oh, he's only been so quiet
Cause he been spending that "Lighters" money
Man, these people spend too much time predicting
Was on your mind up until the time you're non-existent
In the midst of all my success and my failures
I'm just out here struggling
Guess that's what happens in rapping
When you're in your motherfucking prime

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

lyricism for 99.9% of ALL MCs..and if it's not used so gratuitously then it's language that serves a purpose...but I will say that an MC like Rakim hardly cursed in his music and it didn't take away from the effectiveness of his rhymes at all...I'd even say it requires an MC to be more creative (same w/comedians)

>but didn't cause it just made me feel old to type.

it's like i usedta try and let the 1st or 2nd reference skate. but now the shit be all in the hooks, all the r&b singin. it's hella unnecessary.

and when you consider that the target demo is kids its even crazier.

i mean, we what, 10 - 15 years deep into strip club music being mainstream?

i mean, i appreciate asscheeks as much if not moreso than the next man. but do i REALLY got to hear songs totally devoted to asscheeks and how and in what contexts they should be maneuvered and manipulated? is is too much to ask?

it definitely bothers me more than it used to. a lot of my favorites coming up cussed sparingly anyway. but now that my kids are old enough to start scrolling through my collection and playing songs i'm like, "yoooo chill with that". i can't even let them listen to the radio in the car even with the edits. straight vulgar. needless to say i've been slowly cleaning up my collection looking for the edited or instrumental versions.

If its natural den I ain't trippin'.

If its forced and Dude is just cussin' simply for the sake of cussin' den Iounnt fux wit' it.

Its very easy to discern the difference.

Makes it easier for gatherings and just riding in the car when you want to hear some hiphop, but have others in the car who the cussing might offend.

Ice-T when he says "You don't like how I'm livin' well fuck you" fits "New Jack Hustler" perfectly and is part of the mood of the song

The gratuitous f-bombs on "Efil4zaggin" were nonsense to me, just becomes a cartoon

Partially why K-OS and Shad are among my current favs. Otherwise hearing a song with blank spaces & sound effects for curses is just awkward as f#&k to me. $#!+ is just $#!++%.

it WASN'T no profanity in rap records (except for blowfly). mc's would cuss on tapes and live shows an shit, but they weren't doing anything to mess with their chance to get 'on wax'.

then we got a little bit of cussin, which was more of less reflective of cats being (and talking) regular. ironically, a lot of that was ushered in w/ rev run an nem. ('if you say you heard my rhymes, we gonna have to fight/ cuz i just made the motherfuckers up last night')

then it became more prevalent but at some point (tipper gore, pmrc, explicit content labels an shit) it became something done on purpose to provoke and shock.

now, een r&b be on some bleepbleepittybleep ish.

*throws hands up*.

peace & blessings,

x.

I just want it to sound honest and natural.
Like Weeknd and his out-of-place cursing just sounds juvenile and stupid... even though
he's r&b, but he's a great example of forced cursing... almost like he writes a song and
then goes back and rewrites it because he forgot to curse in it.

I don't care if you're talking about your mom, religion, children, whatever.
If it sounds natural, then I'm with it.

It kills me that there is so much cussing in rap. I try to introduce hip hop to my son all the time but it is tiring to try and find clean edits.

It's like, here- this is my musical history... but you can't listen to it until you are in high school.lol.

As a teen and a twenty-something I didn't care. It was our music and we approach it how we want to. Who cares about what others think or say... now I care...

What the hell was he thinking? Did he just turn 13 and find out how to cuss?

The clean version is sooo much better. The dirty version's chorus sounds almost comical.
This is a case of cursing just for the sake of cursing and making things worse

and of course rakim was the master, no profanity involved. i wish more acts would try to express themselves without it and see what happened. but overall i think it's kind of a central thing to the genre, i mean if you dont have a parental advisory label, you ain't SHIT, right?

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
