"James Robinson-21 mile has to move from Detroit (swipe)"

Detroit man whose 21-mile walk to work inspired $350,000 in donations moves to temporary home 56-year-old factory worker did not feel safe with newfound fortune, police say

The Detroit man whose determination to walk more than 20 miles a day to get to and from work inspired an online campaign that raised more than $350,000 for him abruptly moved on Tuesday after telling police that he did not feel safe with his newfound fortune.

According to the Detroit Free Press — whose profile of 56-year-old James Robertson led to the outpouring of donations and gifts, including a new car — the factory worker was moved to a temporary home after consulting with local law enforcement officials.

"We had a meeting with him he expressed interest that he did not feel safe," Detroit Police Capt. Aric Tosqui told the newspaper. "People were actually asking him for money."

More than $350,000 was pledged for Robertson through a crowdfunding campaign launched by Evan Leedy, a 19-year-old college student who read the story and wanted to help a stranger in need. According to the paper, Robertson has yet to see any of the money raised and is expected to meet with financial advisers this week to discuss how the donations will be managed.

"I wanted to get it over with," Robertson said of the move. "There were so many factors involved."

In December, an 86-year-old Detroit man went missing after reportedly winning $20,000 in a lottery game, police said. Last week, he was found stabbed to death, and police charged a 20-year-old with his murder.

" knew about that story," Tosqui said. "And I also know about an incident in the 1st Precinct where a gentleman was killed after he allegedly won some money. In those two examples, no one approached the department. But if somebody won the lottery tomorrow and contacted us, we would look at the situation in the same way and see what we could do," he said.

Robertson told the paper he plans to stay in the temporary residence until he finds a permanent home, possibly closer to his $10.55-an-hour factory job in Rochester Hills.

"Don't get me wrong," Robertson, who has lived in Detroit for more than 15 years. "It'll be hard to leave the city that I love."

James Robertson, the Detroit man who had to walk 21 miles to work every day for years after his car broke down, has moved to a new home out of worries for his safety. Robertson got help from the police and decamped without even informing his girlfriend.
Robertson relocated from the rooming house where he has lived for the past 15 years and paid $220 a week for rent. Robertson also received a 2015 loaded Ford Taurus priced at $35,000 last week, which he was parking in the precinct’s parking lot, reports The Detroit Free Press. His crowdfunding campaign netted him $350,000.
According to police, Robertson, 56, wanted to move to a place where he felt safer. He made the move almost immediately after crime-prevention specialists offered him temporary living quarters, Detroit police Capt. Aric Tosqui said. “We had a meeting with him (and) he expressed interest that he did not feel safe,” said Tosqui, commanding officer of the 3rd Precinct.
It probably was wise to move as Robertson’s new windfall has received major global publicity. And as soon as news hit that Robertson had extra cash, people came out of the woodwork asking for handouts–even though he has yet to get the cash in hand from his GoFundMe campaign.
“People were actually asking him for money,” 2nd Deputy Chief June West said.
The recent murder of an 86-year-old Detroit man who just won the lottery for $20,000 also spurred Robertson’s decision to move.
According to Tosqui, he reached out to a local businessman and asked if he could provide an empty apartment to Robertson, at no cost “for a few days” until Robertson found a permanent location.

I just have a bad feeling about the fact that he hasn't seen any of the money.
