I think Jason Jones' personality on there has been close enough to Stewart that he could slide in with minimal interruption.

I think it's different from Colbert leaving. That persona was all his and no one can emulate that.

Like it seems Conan to TBS, Oliver to HBO and Colbert to CBS isn't the optimal moves.

Wouldn't Conan to CBS, Colbert to 11pm slot , Wilmore and Oliver right were they are be a better line up?

>Like it seems Conan to TBS, Oliver to HBO and Colbert to CBS

optimal to whom?

optimally to Conan means he's on NBC's Tonight Show as he was a few yrs ago for a couple months. when that opportunity blew up Letterman was still on CBS's Late Show under a yrs long contract. and no other show was available as Fallon had already been hired for NBC's Late Night having replaced Conan. so when TBS offered him a show he decided to take it. should he have just sat off the air waiting for Letterman to leave CBS's Late Show?

Likewise, when Letterman decided to leave CBS's Late Show Colbert was available. Conan was already on TBS's Conan Show under a yrs long contract. should CBS have aired re-runs of the Late Show until Conan's TBS contract expired? or should CBS have paid TBS goo-gobs of $ to buy Conan's contract?

Oliver wanted his own show, i assume. HBO wanted to develop one. after his successful stint hosting the Daily Show in Stewart's absence, HBO offered him a show. i dunno if he's under a long contract that will prevent him from leaving that show and possibly returning to host Comedy Central/Comcast's The Daily Show (Comcast owns CC and NBC along w/a host of other channels).

fuck you.

Comcast does not own CC. Viacom owns CC.

Viacom owns CBS and CC. When Conan got the stiff Arm, CBS should have approached him and said (or contracted the following), sit back for a year or two, live life a little, and when Dave retires that slot is yours and you'll enjoy it for the next decade.

The return of Conan after a year or two would have been huge. Instead we didn't get a chance to miss him and he relegated himself to non-relevancy by going to TBS.

While Colbert was getting ichy to move, they could have promised they could have talked to Jon Stewart and get a sense of how long he wants to stick around. Could have promised him the slot. Or even Jon Oliver (though I think Oliver at HBO is optimal entertainment for me). Wilmore still gets the late night slot.

I think Colbert as a straight up host of a standard late night show is a bit of a waste of something incredible he created. *shrugs*

Thank you Jon.

For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none. Jon has been at the heart of Comedy Central, championing and nurturing the best talent in the industry, in front of and behind the camera. Through his unique voice and vision, ‘The Daily Show’ has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come. Jon will remain at the helm of ‘The Daily Show’ until later this year. He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family.

Jon Stewart cannot make the leap to anchoring a daily hard news show on a national network until he's put a few yrs distance between himself and that comedy show. he'd need to work as a journalist first.

if he gets the NBC Nightly News job i'd expect several NBC actual journalists would be outraged that they'd been jumped by a comedian w/no news experience. and actual journalists at other outlets would have a field day covering the story of his hiring. NBC News would be a joke - literally and figuratively. inside and out.

i'd be stunned. i don't see it.

fuck you.

i enjoyed david gregory's meet the press, and, although i find jon stewart funny and likeable, it would have been hard to adjust to him as the new host. having him host a 30-minute national nightly news broadcast makes even less sense since there is no room for what he does best.

In response to Reply # 20

it won't happen.

that job is the top on-air job in all of NBC News. actual trained journalists w/years of experience are in line for it. if Stewart is offered the job over them i expect several of them would resign. the person who offered Stewart the job would likely be fired. the entire news department would likely go into free-fall.

it won't happen.

This is America...since when did we not turn a blind eye to morals and credentials if we wanted something?

Jon would bring them more ratings than all of these journalist you claim would quit combined and at the end of the day, that's what the shit is about.

I get he's not the most qualified and maybe not the most deserving but that doesn't mean shit.

And I do agree with you but you're losing site of reality.

37. "a few yrs back an anchor resigned from NBC Chicago's news dept"
In response to Reply # 36
Tue Feb-10-15 10:29 PM by SoWhat

b/c the station had a new news director who wanted to have Jerry Springer appear on the nightly news to offer editorial comment. Carol Marin is/was of the most respected anchors and journalists in Chicago. she'd threatened to quit if Springer was brought on. the exec brought Springer on for ratings. she quit in dramatic fashion. he co-anchor had threatened to quit also and ended up leaving the station a few months later.

http://www.nytimes.com/1997/05/04/us/chicago-news-anchor-quits-after-station-hires-jerry-springer.html

Springer appeared only twice. the ratings boost didn't happen - in fact the ratings tanked. the news director was blamed. this happened even though Springer has legit news credentials - he'd anchored a local news broadcast previously. but the problem was he was then-currently known for his talk show. and it was clear that he was being brought to the show as a naked attempt to draw ratings and to convert the newscast to a tabloid style. especially once 2 of the areas most respected tv anchors raised an objection publicly that they were concerned about the news being dumbed down and losing integrity in a blind attempt to draw ratings.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WMAQ-TV#Jerry_Springer

based on this i don't see NBC News actually offering Stewart the gig as anchor of the Nightly News. not now. maybe yrs from now after Stewart has worked in some capacity for an actual news department somewhere. b/c to date he's only done comedy - unless i'm missing something. but he has been clear and everyone involved in his show is clear - it is a COMEDY SHOW. it is not a news show. it is a comedy show. it is not a news show. he has no news show experience.

those nightly news anchor gigs are pretty serious to ppl w/in broadcast journalism. as cynical we can all be i still know that that's an area of tv broadcasting that remains a bit sacrosanct. the ppl involved take it seriously. too many of them would raise such serious objections to his hiring that it would create a disaster for NBC. and NBC doesn't need that right now while NBC News is doing damage control w/this Brian Williams story. it can't afford for its news department to be the focus of another story. it doesn't need the drama. so Stewart will not be offered that gig.

i understand your points - i disagree soundly. it won't happen.

fuck you.

I'd imagine journalists would have much more respect for Jon.

Springer is a joke to everyone.

Stewart actually does the news just with a comedic twist.

I think he would actually add a much needed perspective. Again, may not be the best move but I do believe he would handle the position with pride.

i'm just not sure why this is being discussed. i doubt he has any interest in being an evening broadcast news anchor regardless of whether it was offered to him.

back to old faces, former daily show correspondent mo rocca easily transitioned to cbs doing fun and interesting stories alongside former mtv news correspondent serena altschul, whose fellow mtv news correspondent chris connelly reports for abc. those with the *interest* and aptitude can make the switch. i sincerely doubt jon stewart is even interested.

I thought he was good for the Bush era when the landscape was so absurd that someone had to poke fun at it

But beyond that I'm just not really sure what he offers. Comfort food for people to hear what they want to hear but not much of substance beyond that. I've actually been really digging John Oliver because he sounds fed up and is digging in-depth into issues I'm not seeing too much elsewhere. Jon Stewart's "outrage" always seemed to be a bit forced and I thought he relied too much on humor when he could have gone for the kill like Oliver does

agreed, and i loathe the way this show is parroted and jocked by snobs who don't want to think for themselves but don't realize it or see that as a problem. this show is only a notch above real cable news, and the fact that so many people admit to getting their news from this as a primary source is alarming. maybe jon stewart couldn't take being part of the problem anymore.

>Am I missing something?

it might be just the difference between having a legacy show on comedy central and having a show inspired by it way later on hbo, but from the few times i saw john oliver i agree with you.

64. "They Should Cancel The Daily Show (SWIPE)"

I agree with this viewpoint. Jon Stewart IS The Daily Show. The should probably put on a completely new show in its place. It can be from people who worked on The Daily Show. But don't call it The Daily Show. Have a different set up and premise. That would be best. Otherwise, people will always compare it to Jon Stewart and The Daily Show.

Just Cancel The Daily Show
Brian Moylan
@BrianJMoylan

7:17 AM ET

It’s the best thing for Stewart, for whichever poor soul has to step into his shoes, and for the audience.

The news that we’ve been expected but hoping not to be true finally came on Tuesday night. It was sort of like finding out that Santa Clause wasn’t real or that the epic twerk fail video was a hoax. Yes, it was the news that Jon Stewart is leaving his place behind The Daily Show desk after 17 long years of skewering just about every administration since then and earning more Emmys than Anna Nicole Smith had pills.

It was sad news indeed and both Twitter and the press reacted with its typical “oh it’s so sad” keening. There have already been the inevitable “Who Should Replace Jon Stewart” posts in various corners of the Internet. I’m sad about the news as well and that’s why I think the best person to replace Jon Stewart is absolutely no one at all. In fact, Comedy Central should cancel The Daily Show entirely.

Just think about it, though it was created two years before Stewart started, The Daily Show is infused with Stewart’s indelible DNA. No one remembers that tall blonde guy who hosted it before him (his name was Craig Kilborn and he’s gone on to do, um, not much else) or that the show was more like a late-night version of The Soup and didn’t get nearly as political as it did once Stewart took over. The structure of the show, the tenor of the jokes, the way that Stewart ranted and raved and yelled and screamed and made you angry at the news but not at him is a trademarked approached. He’s the one that did it first and he’s the one that did it best.

So why should someone else try to out-Stewart Stewart? They shouldn’t. The show should be cancelled.

That’s what Comedy Central wisely did with The Colbert Report when Stephen Colbert announced that he was taking David Letterman’s old post at CBS. They did the right thing and gave the slot over to Larry Wilmore who is creating a panel show that is shaped in his own image, one that has less to do with aping right-wing idiocy and more about creating consensus around the stupidity of the world at large.

The Daily Show seems like it is something like The Tonight Show, something that can be passed down from host to host and remain somewhat intact. In fact, Stewart said in his goodbye, that it’s time for someone else to have the opportunity. He is wrong. No one watches “The Tonight Show.” They watch Johnny Carson or Jay Leno or, for that brief shining moment, Conan O’Brien; even though the format was similar, it was the host people favored. Recently Jimmy Fallon came along and converted The Tonight Show for the internet age. He’s shortened the monologue considerably, gotten rid of all of Leno’s old formats like Headlines and Jay Walking, and replaced them with sketches of his own and games with celebrities. It is an entirely new show. So why is it still called The Tonight Show?

I feel like the same thing needs to happen to The Daily Show. When John Oliver took over so Stewart could go shoot his first feature film, he pretty much was just a mouthpiece for Stewart, working with the same writers and serving as a place holder until the boss could come back from sabbatical. His show on HBO is so much different from what The Daily Show does, and it’s so much better for it. It’s allowed Oliver to do actual journalism, find his own voice, and see what he has to contribute to the conversation.

That’s what was always so great about The Daily Show. It was entirely Stewart’s vision, and we won’t have that vision without Stewart. Now that he’s gone, let’s give the show a rest and let someone new figure out how to take down our establishment one comedic peg at a time.

These think pieces and all their needless speculating are asking the wrong thing. It should not be “Who should replace Jon Stewart on The Daily Show?” they should be asking, “Who out there has a new voice to create the next revolutionary show in late night television?” Whoever that is shouldn’t be shackled with the legacy that Stewart created any more than Larry Wilmore should have to put on an American flag pin and try to be “Stephen Colbert.” Cancel The Daily Show and find someone out there who can create a wonderful gem of her own. It’s the best thing for Stewart, for whichever poor soul has to step into his shoes, and for the audience — whether or not they’re willing to get over their grief and admit it.

But with that being said......it was about that time for him to go. He's been doing it for a very long time and can't/shouldn't do it forever.

But damn, no one I know of could do it like he did. I can't stand to watch news programs. I feel like it is recycled trash and fails to do its job, which is to thoroughly inform. He was my source for news because he would raise questions I was already thinking about and put it on a major platform.

I loved the way he destroyed Jim Cramer of Mad Money. I loved how he went at that former pundit from CNN (who is now on Fox). I really feel Stewart tried to be the voice of the average Joe, who was too busy to follow every little details of politics/24 hour news cycle, and raise questions when something didn't seem right.

Bill Maher is okay but sometimes a bit too arrogant. John Oliver is good....but I am curious if he could keep up the good work in years to come.

I am sad to see Jon go but....eh...I'll get over it.
