I'd actually like to see it remade. It was a good film that should have been a GREAT film. I've long held the theory that The Vietnam War played a bigger role in the destruction of black communities than people think. I'll expound later, but Dead Prez touches one the subject.

a lot of soldiers couldn't function back into society and have very few resources to help. Which led to drug use. Followed by an influx of drugs in the black community.

Imagine how hard it was for minorities to fight for a country like ours in the 60's

These dudes came back desensitized to killing and hooked on drugs. No one respected the troops. They had limited employment opportunities and the the worst GI Bill in American history.

it's a fantastic film.

To be honest, I can't pick between Apoc Now and Full Metal Jacket but I know they are both better than Platoon.

Apocalypse Now may be "set" in Vietnam but it's not a Vietnam war story.

Platoon is not a great choice, imo, because it implies that there was something to be learned from the experience of the war. In fact, one of the reasons that the war left so many men so fucked up was that it was meaningless and confusing and there wasn't anything you could learn that would translate in any way to normal life.

Full Metal Jacket encompasses a fuck ton of stuff, layer upon layer, that's actually integral to the average grunt's experience of Vietnam, including the complete shift in the middle of the movie to something totally different and utterly confusing, the sexualization of the weaponry, and the emasculation of the GI including the fact that the sniper is a woman.

Like, I'm even suprised it's considered a good movie, let alone a great one.

And FMJ is the best for all the reasons you said. I had this argument with a friend of mine about the movie and he's like, "The second part of the movie falls apart. Once they get to Vietnam there's no real story and it kinda looses cohesion." And I was like, "Exactly."
