3. "comparison can be lazy" In response to Reply # 1 Mon Feb-09-15 03:25 PM by teefiveten
this and high maintenance have nothing to do with each other, come on now
it's definitely arguable but isn't worth the time. yes they are both short format shot in NYC. that's about it. one is a series, one is a film.
yeah they could have played it like 3 regular black dudes lamenting on gentrification in their neighborhood but the italian personalities put it in a more understandable context (on some "y'all were saying the same thing about us!") and immediately brings to mind the dudes in Jungle Fever (which I believe was his aim)
Shaka is an amazingly talented dude and I am waiting for him to do big things since Newlyweeds..but I don't think this will considerably move the ball forward for him as far as world domination.
The High Maintenance comparison was more a comment on Sundance. This felt more like a sketch than a short film. So it's strange to me this would be a sundance selection. (Compared to high maintenance episodes which seem more like short films with beginnings, middles and ends which seem like a more natural selection for sundance selections. but of course, maybe HM episodes were never submitted for consideration).
I definitely overthink this though because I've been trying to figure out the sundance formula for a minute now. From what I've seen so far I think the formula involves having connections to Sundance.
