"If Africa was in charge of their own resources they would be like Dubai?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZX3CO7fPMs&feature=player_detailpage#t=198

Here, Dame talks about hearing how Mangoes are shipped to Switzerland and then sold back to Africa as Mango Juice.

Europe is making billions off of Africa, that's why they're leading the world in terms of currency value. The white man is still eating off the black slavery:

http://thecnnfreedomproject.blogs.cnn.com/2012/01/19/child-slavery-and-chocolate-all-too-easy-to-find/

Africa has tons of resources yet the people in the country struggle.

Instead of philanthropists bringing Africa fish, why dont they teach them how to fish? The resources are there, why is Europe in charge of it?

But then again, you have corrupt leaders in Africa, so that's another topic. Ugh.

iono about the natives but i know there are a ton of indians in the UAE basically doing slave labor

africa has a ton of black ppl getting money and even a couple of billionaires eating off the natural resources
problem is it's not being distributed
and the black ppl in control of the resources are the ones signing the contracts with the europeans and chinese and getting rich off the kickbacks

for the way workers are treated.
things have supposedly improved somewhat in recent years, but in general, laborers are imported and treated at standards way below what would be considered acceptable in the West.

and how did you come to this conclusion?

>In these videos Dame talks about independence and cutting out
>the middle man. Yet you wanna throw darts.

I've watched most of these videos and applaud the entrepreneurial spirit behind them. that doesn't mean I can't call out the fact that they are pretty limited in depth.

this one specifically.
dame is really mad that people in ghana are importing mango juice.
it's so stupid.
is ALL the mango juice in that country imported from a european one?
how many people are drinking this imported mango juice?
is it a sizable section of the population or is he just drinking what is essentially a luxury product?
how does he feel about locally available US goods that are imported or shipped out then re-imported for production?
if he actually wanted to have a real discussion all of these issues would be addressed.
instead, he drops a one-liner for dudes at the barber shop to make the Weebay "Shorty Was a Cop" face to.

him having a problem with this shows a naivete about international commerce. i understand the point he is trying to make, and on its face, the example is fine. but it's a silly one because this is a common business practice almost anywhere for different reasons.

again, no idea what jaden and willow have to do with this.
i happen to like them AND Dame Dash.

we import mango juice from UAE (does UAE have mangoes)
but every year tonnes of mangoes rot on the ground
does.not.compute
we are buying chickens from brazil (brazil!!!!)
there is definitely an extractive industry and less direct investment on the continent
lets look at tea, coffee... we are still following the colonist model of 'trade'

its problematic.... but this is where i stumble on where to assign blame.

just a personal disclaimer.
that's not to say their collective hands are clean, but i'm much more worried with what my own people are or aren't doing.

it's condescending and paternalistic to think that but for the heels of some mysterious white man Downtown Africa would look like Dubai.

or excuse their behavior when it is violent or otherwise detrimental to black people.

White people don't get to be absolved of the shit they've done, or the the shit they're currently doing just because our primary focus should be on building our own power and wealth.

It's very important for us to focus on ourselves and what we need to do, but we have been wronged, and they continue to wrong us, and if we're serious about reclaiming what's ours, then we need to be upfront about that.

I believe that there are a great many people within our community who want to improve our community. I do think that there are too many people who think that institutional barriers are an excuse to give up or shirk responsibilities they have towards their community. However I their counter-productive reactions to these issues, is evidence that these problems are very real, and we need to address them.

And address them doesn't mean "blaming" Mr. Charlie.

It means getting in his face and saying, "You fucked up our homeland, you belittle our sons and daughters, and you've spent the better part of two centuries trying to make us a second class citizen. So, get your hands off of our shit, and leave us the fuck alone so we can actually engage in the task of rebuilding."

At this point the only reason I want proper attribution for certain problems, is so that they can serve as a warning sign for those of us who want to build something for our people.

So that when we're cheering France on for "helping" to liberate Mali from Islamic Terrorists, we stop and remember, "Oh right, Mali is still tied to France through a neo-colonial banking system that continues to extract wealth. Fuck France. The sooner African nations can limit their financial dependency on Europe the better."

this is definitely unrealistic

but i also do look at current trade disparities, policies of world bank and imf that have had a huge impact on our economy
the fact that foreign direct investment (which allows for the development of native industries)
is the lowest in africa- i mean we are embracing china because at least they build a road?
an aid industry that really is more of a job creation program and band aid
(and those of us who work in this area, know better)
and the governments that have been propped up by the west
(because they are still doing this shit)

Im with ngozi-iweala on this, 'trade not aid'
(and no, not dambisa moyo's pedestrian diatribe)

and yes we decry corruption but even the west is complicit in this
(makes it easier to avoid e.g taxes, environmental compliance, supports the banking industry - where is that 20 billion housed?)
so im not over spreading the blame
yes the biggest blame are our big men- and perhaps the rest of us as well, because why havent we been able to rid ourselves of this nuisance?
i am incredibly frustrated
i spent a month in south sudan in december
and was walking around thinking, 'im i the only one seeing that we are on the verge of economic collapse?'
no one else was bothered

And it was swept under the already bulging rug.
Somehow, this is more troubling to me than the import of fancy mango juice from a European country Dame Dash can't even pin point.

of the same economic system.

Both of those things stem from the same root cause, which was that colonization and de-colonization left a lot of places in Africa with kind of shitty, unstable governance. The type of governance that sees nothing wrong with embezzling billions or allowing multinational fruit companies to exploit your country's natural resources.

re: Nigeria

Nigeria is one of the world's largest exporters of crude oil.
Yet, Nigeria does not supply oil to it's own people because it no longer has working crude oil refineries.
So the country ships out crude oil to the world
then buys refined oil for its own use (probably at a mark-up).

the very definition of hustling backwards.

my knowledge on this area is really basic, but i asked my pops wtf
and he basically said it wasn't in the interests of the people in charge to take on the expenses of setting up our own refineries.

(i'm sure it's not that simple, but maybe it is).

so in other words, the people at the top would rather eat good than think of the long term needs of the nation they were elected to govern.

at that point, I can't be mad at European oil companies who see an opportunity to come in and get guap
(though i CAN be mad at them for the pollution they leave behind)

then when the checks start rolling in the government has no motivation to take over or setting up operations because of the reason you stated below
a select few are getting VERY rich off these types of relationships

and got there by shitty policies left there during the colonial era.

It's not as if whitey gave them any sort of structure for self rule; they set the various states up to have a small elite few keep most of the wealth. It leads to states where you basically have an elite copying the government methods of the old colonial masters.

You see the same thing in other places outside of the diaspora like Haiti

everyone in government treats it like a lottery and thus will agree to any deal that will fatten their pockets even though it fucks over their countrymen.

Outside of broken bureaucracies those that actually play it straight are forced to deal with (or get dealt by) t side groups like paramilitary thugs used to unofficially enforce the status quo, or powerful businessmen that demand their cut, etc

hard to blame an old faceless whiteman for a system he may have put in place when you have decades of black men getting fat and rich off their own people's backs.

(this is a bit of an oversimplification)

it's complicated on all fronts and there is plenty of blame to go around.
speaking of nigeria specifically, i've literally never heard a nigerian blame the Western world for the country's economic ills.
we know who is getting rich because we can see them right in front of us.

Yeah you guys have shitty politicians, shitty politicians who are more than happy to sell you fuckers down the river for the white man's money, the same way they sold those slaves for the white man's money all those centuries ago.

And I take your point, that at some point the origin becomes irrelevant, but it isn't just the origin. It's the fucking present. All of those resources being extracted out of the continent are headed towards the West and China.

The only thing that has really changed is that now we should be taking our leaders to task because we've had how long to see the type of game they're playing?

How would that development look?
A lot of the ills we see in African countries (corruption, wars, dictators) are a result of colonizers, either directly or indirectly.

But it is naive to say that Africa would be a paradise if they never arrived.
There are a lot of natural resources in Africa, but at the time they either had no knowledge of them or the ability to extract them.

Iron smelting and Agriculture developed independently of one another in a variety of places.

It's not like there weren't numerous African cultures that mined precious metals and gems, studied the stars, traded with far away lands, etc.

Where would Europeans be if other cultures hadn't brought them agriculture (Europe was one of the places where agriculture was invented)?

I mean it has been almost 4 years. What the fuck is taking them so long.

I mean, the United States got our shit right the first time...

Oh..wait...no we didn't: Our government collapsed 7 years after our independence and we had a massive civil war about 80 years after that.

What makes anyone think that Africa is some strange case where they just can't have stability?

The Italian government collapses every other week, Russia can't go a decade without annexing one of their neighbors, and we all know how some countries in the Eurozone are faring.

Africa is going to be fine. We just need to stop acting like its current state is representative of its past or indicative of its future.

Resources is a broad term, so we aren't really talking about one thing. We're talking about wealth accumulation, governance, geo-politics, etc.

The OP might have made the question sound simple, but I don't think anyone here was treating it that way.

>in your neck of the woods?

they are the oil industry
i dont know how much we owe them- but i think majority of our oil revenue goes back to the chinese
they are the biggest extractors and partners (can we even call this a partnership?)
they built the pipeline
they can successfully demand the presence of s.sudan in khartoum for a meeting nobody- including the americans knew nothing about and were not invited ( they did this in december)

we have chinese supermarkets in juba
these mofos dont speak english
we have chinese hospitals in juba
they diagnose in chinese and give drugs that are in chinese (so nobody, including ministry of health) knows wtf is going on

i might as well give my (future) first born a chinese name
(wlthough funny enough, the surname's of my father's tribe already sound chinese :o(

51. "actually, if the peace negotiations were anything like"
In response to Reply # 42

what is happening currently in addis ababa?
then we were screwed from the very beginning
we just did not know it
what's happening right now is a direct result of unresolved issues stemming from the 2005 peace negotiations
i can bet we shall see more of the same in the future
because even this current 'peace' deal is nothing but a postponing

i dont think s.sudanese have ever been in control

The top problems plaguing African countries are

Lack of infastructure
Colonial borders still being used.
Seeing anything European as exceptional.
TRIBALISM holding thousand year old grudges when yall really cousins.
The oligarchy selling out and folding to european/nato/G8 pressure.

This nigga Bob Johnson with all this money goes to Liberia and opens a night club (WTF)

As soon as I get enough money I definitely plan on seeing what I can invest in with Ghana and its dual citizenship.

In response to Reply # 0

Africa does not have a monopoly on the resources to demand top dollar. Most importantly the trade relationship to make them the dominate player will never happen because blacks are the most hated.

The only option is to be completely independent and say fuck all trade. They are losing 1000 to 1 in every deal right now.
