brother was tryna teach me and it was a semi disaster...

then as in tyoing class at night when trying to sleep my mind and hands are typing out my thoughts due to repetition of the class

then I started doing the same thing regarding hand, foot clutch organization when trying to sleep

so I decide to go out foolishly on my own on my street the next few mornings and boom...after a few tries, starts n stalls, I had it

Not so fun in stop-and-go traffic, or city streets with mad lights & stop signs.

Unfortunately, that's where I learned, and I think that put me off of driving them. All that shifting gets old fast when I have to stop at the end of every block. Glad I learned tho.

Finally gave it up when I bought my "new" car back in 2013. I spent from 2000 to like 2007 working jobs that required long commutes, often in stop and go traffic. And doing that with a stick-shift is literally an extreme pain. My left foot still hurts to this day.

I don't do it often enough to be really proficient. But I'm good enough to get from one place to another without a problem.

I've known how to drive a stick as long as I've been driving, but she had no clue. Taught her on my old 5 speed Escort and it took her about an hour to get it but I'm pretty sure she's forgotten how since then.

they say you can't fuck the engine up because the car's computer won't allow it. Shit still makes me nervous. I need to find an empty lot to play with it.

In response to Reply # 30

yea i wonder if these cars are really meant for you to be manually shifting like that. a lot of times i feel like i'm holding the gears too long when i do
i mainly use mine to control when i get into 7th gear on the highway
it's basically the only way i can get more than 20mpg lol

and circling the megachurch parking lot up the street. A lot of stalls out of first, but I got it fully down in about a month and change. Nothing like getting on the on ramp and popping the clutch up to 5th. I wrecked that car and the new one I bought is an auto. I miss it a lot. My left foot still wants to mash an imaginary clutch when I'm behind the wheel.

Streets won't let me chill.

I haven't owned another stick since my old escort. It took a good minute before I got used to braking without downshifting and there's still been instances where I wanna drop a gear or two to pass someone and reach out for the shifter.

last Volvo wagons you could easily find with 5 speeds were the 200s and early 700 series. they still make them, but US buyers never took them en masse. I'm often really shocked to see a non-R Volvo with a manual in the States.

and nowadays I'd rather have a DSG if "go faster/better fuel economy" is the order of the day. they are technically superior to manuals, but not as "fun"

from an ownership perspective I'd def. rather have a manual than these overcomplicated autos or DCTs

if I hit the lotto I'm getting a GTI, Focus ST, or a Focus RS and let that be my "Eat Da Poo Poo" ride while the Volvo is the daily driver

b/c i hear it's easiest to learn to operate a manual transmission when one has little to no context for driving. it's more difficult to learn to operate a manual when you can already operate an automatic.

Baranco Pontiac. It was my first new car, a 96 Pontiac Sunfire convertible.

I was shopping used and dude asked if I was interested in a new car. I told him that the only new car on the lot I liked, in my price range, was the ragtop Sunfire, but it was a stick...and I can't drive stick.

He literally went, "Sheeeit...we can fix that right now."
