shop (just because that's how some of them pronounce that sound), and those old dudes aren't also calling them "chips". I don't think there's any correlation there.
Chip just comes from the first two letters and the last two letters, and is just a way to abbreviate it easily. "Ship" isn't as descriptive. That could be anything - membership, ownership, relationship, dealership, etc.

i have thought about that, like sowhat, but didn't ponder it too deeply. i chalked it up to CHampionshIP, and also because it's usually pronounced championchip. not necessarily a real hard CH, more of a "sch" sound. i dunno.

still, this 'chip' nonsense irks me. mostly b/c i believe the origin is in the mispronunciation of 'championship' and not a contracting of 'championship' as some claim.
