"how do you feel about jail folks having internet correspondence"
Thu Feb-05-15 11:56 AM by GoldenWon

my best lil cousin is hooked up on corrlink.com
basically a way for family members to correspond with someone in federal via internet messaging
of course everything is monitored, which is cool.
but are u miffed by that though?
Like do you feel like being barely able to talk to your family is a just part of the punishment?
I can understand that, but I don't believe in breaking people bc they committed a crime either. I want him to be okay when he gets out.
Anyway, just curious about general perception

Just because someone is in jail (which is suppose to be a form a corrective rehabilitation), doesn't mean that they should be cut off from family or support.

Being locked up will cause one to develop a survivalist mentality that can jack-up ones way thinking in a major way. People need to have a that tie to home to help them make it though to the other side of a sentence (short or long). Being locked up doesn't just affect the person that's incarcerated, but whole family units are disrupted. So, if the internet can help keep a family together, motivate a person to become better, help a person stay positive, etc. I'm all for it.

caged animals the better. b/c it makes them more likely to believe they have some worth and can offer some value in the world which increases their self worth and decreases the likelihood they'll re-offend upon release.

so yes, let them have this very limited and monitored and controlled contact w/the outside world.

fuck you.

writing letters is hard these days because of finding the time to write, then remembering to mail it out. This would be so much better.

like someone else said above, if it were your mom, you'd want to be able to talk to her. The thing with picking and choosing who can get what is that

1. the innocent who will be unfairly punished because of they were convicted
2. those who killed out of self defense or accident or trying to protect someone are also being punished

i can add more but those are who I think of. As far as rapists, I believe they deserve a different type of punishment other than just jail but that's not the issue here.

I know ppl who went to jail for murder and rape who were innocent, so perhaps my view is skewed.
But no one is lobbying for these ppl to have twitter or facebook or being able to do whatever they want.

But being able to email and send pics back and forth to your family/friends could provide some relief and rehabilitation to those who are in jail

I think prison should really try to rehabilitate people, rather than simply cage them. Treating them like worthy people with a future, would help to reduce recidivism

I've got a friend who has been locked down since last May. He got caught up with some bullshit, and is looking at 10 years no parole. Now dude is in no way built for this...architect, master's degree, two teen sons. He had a "nigga moment" and took a shot at a young dude in his apartment complex, who whooped his ass after an argument.

Since his imprisonment, he has been wearing out his communication resources to his close friends and family (which includes me). I don't want forget about him, but dude is relentless with the calls and emails. He literally calls everyday. Many times it's desperate ideas on how he can win his freedom. Other times it's banal prison life shit.

I've gotten to a point where I only take his call every other day or so. If I don't answer for two days, I'll have at least 9-10 missed calls, and a few "I've been trying to reach you..." emails.

It just not in my heart to tell him, "Yo, man you need to ease up. Just man up and do your time," but I can't do years of this constant calling and emailing.

Oh, and that shit costs too...

even then i'd throw lil hints suggesting he use that time/energy on his family
if i ever went to jail i'd honestly wouldn't bother harassing ppl
jail is a society within itself with it's own rules and norms. i'd probably concentrate on building relationships in there and not being a burden on family and friends
it's easy to say that on the outside though

are you saying you don't want them to have internet access because you are tired of getting contacted by your friend? to be honest, your friend is his own person and if he couldn't email you, he'd just keep calling you until you answer...I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have to deal with that for 10 years but right now, your friend is scared and separated from normalcy and calling and talking to his family and friends is his only connection to the life he had prior to this incidence. this is understandable.

but again, what is your point? you realize not everyone who is locked up behaves in this manner?

my cousin had 15 years for murder (That he didn't do but that's neither here nor there)...we use to right back and forth but as years passed, that became less and less because life...and I said I wish he had email because it's so much easier to contact him and it's *free* for all parties. what sucked the most was him coming out and having to teach him about new technology and how things work. like he knew a little but jesus, they release prisoners back into society with no knowledge of how the world changed and expect them to be able to survive. It's a set up.

or maybe he is just thinking out loud like "damn, he already blowing up my phone, now he is going to spam me all day too?"

I think he is being honest about how much his friend hits him up.

Honestly tho, like someone said below. It's prolly best if he spends more time making new friends in jail since he won't be outside anytime soon.

even if his friend didn't have access to emails (he states that if he doesn't answer his friend sends him an email), they are just going to call more...having email access won't change the amount of times a person tries to hit you up when they are on the level that his friend is...it just means they have other ways to do it. I'm pretty sure there is a time limit for computer access just like their is for phone access.

the only thing I can see changing is more ppl will be willing to use email to contact ppl because it's free as opposed to having their friends pay for phone calls.

I do think that it is a positive thing that they have internet access. However, in my friends case it isn't free. Their access is heavily limited, and they can only send and receive emails through a 3rd party for-profit website. It costs about $10 for about 30 emails, which is a lot less than calling costs.

Really, I just wanted opinions on whether I should bring up the subject with my boy, or just hope that eventually the relentless contact tapers off.
