"I considered destroying this girl's life (LONG READ)"

This girl hit my car. She got out, checked the damage and jumped back in the car and rolled out. My nosey neighbor Doris (Love her) saw that shit and snitched immediately. She left me a note, and then when I called her back she was literally riding around the neighborhood looking for the van. HILARIOUS! Anyway we get a note from the girl the next day with contact information. At this point we've already called one of my wife's homies to take the report and put as a hit and run. So anyway I call the girl and we talk and she asks if we can do this without Cops and insurance. I ask why? "well i'm on probation and if I have any contact with police i go to jail"

See this is the point where i'm thinking should I tell her my wife is a detective? I don't do that though. She's young, she made a mistake and all in all we're still eating good and my kids are safe so I can deal with a little bullshit if its going to keep another young brown kid outta jail.

She's dying to get this paid for over the weekend before the owner comes back. That ain't happening though. I talk to the owner of the van that the girl was driving when she hit my car (since she's not the owner and wasn't supposed to be driving the car at all) and she's livid but she's hoping I don't drag her into this. So she tells me she's a Single mother of 5 and none of the kids have the same father, living on a fixed income and basically asking if I could not bring her insurance into this. I knew it was going to be her before she told me. I know her kids, they're not always great kids, they steal every now and then but for the most part they're just bored because their mother is always working and never around to do much with them.
So knowing this I'm like naw i'm not trynna add extra stress to this lady's life, she's got enough to deal with.

This is our 2ndish car The kid mobile (I drive), and my wife has a take home unmarked car so this is the car that's parked on the street. It's 13 years old, rusty and ugly but great on the inside. Smells good, everything works, and drives great. So we're not giving the car up. It just makes the car uglier. So really in the grand scheme i'm good.

Anyway I have my wife look up what she was on probation for. Man listen, she got caught in a car with a dude with BRICKS in it. She copped to possession, but they dropped the intent to distribute for the probation. Then do a little more digging and she booked on an assault and battery charge that got dropped (fighting her ex's new chick) She's young and impulsive, but she's not a bad person and i'm not trynna ruin this girl's life off of a mistake.

So I got the estimate, she had me fax it, has been pretty stand up about her ability to pay and when I can expect payment. The dude at the body shop said don't put the money back into the car just take the money, which I was going to do anyway.

So I got my first downpayment and i'll get the rest over the next month. So basically i'm trying to be MR. Nice guy, lets see if I finish last on this one.

- (what I assume to be) Felony transporting of narcotics
- Assault & battery (dropped tho)

Then, while ALREADY ON PAPERS she:

- Take a car without permission (could be theft if the owner complained).
- Leaves the scene of / doesn't report an accident

Just sayin'

..there's still time to start some serious convo with this young woman.

i know that area, and its fairly easy for someone walkin' the line to get caught up doin' dumb shit out of boredom.

yeah, this could easily go either way, but at least she'll never be able to say that no one cared enough to give her a break when she really needed it. plus, she's still being held responsible for her actions (just like the probation).

like the OP says, he's familiar with these kids. someone has to take a shot at giving them a chance to be responsible.

...she needs something. She's still doing dumb shit, even while on probation so apparently she hasn't got the message yet. Honestly, paying some cash to make this go away is getting off easy compared to going to jail. And we all know how teens (is she a teen?) are hardheaded about a lot of things.

it's interesting that she would volunteer that info.

also, i dig you giving the young girl a break. but have you considered taking it a step further? if she got warrants why not help her find some free legal help and tell her to go face those charges and get them out the way. why live life on the run?

to be calculated here.

to be sure, going by the book was not gonna net you a whole lot more in the long term. let's say the damage is $1300 and is purely cosmetic... if you don't intend to actually put that much work into the strugglemobile, that $1300 is a lowkey comeup, anyway.

so the calculus is this:

(COST OF INS PMT - WHAT SHE GIVE YOU) versus (COST OF INS PMT + HANDLING IT OFFICIALLY).

if she pays you the full cost of what insurance would have given you, then you are not out of any $$$. she eventually get you that $1300 or whatever the bill is, then its all equal. but there are a LOT of folks, even in that situation, who would throw the book at her in THAT case on some dot the i's, cross the t's bullshit.

HANDLING IT OFFICIALLY means she prolly doing a bid for violating probation, and MIGHT do a significant bid if the previous charges are reinstated (accessory to weight). so she behind bars for a couple years, unable to earn, and moving backwards.

her kids, however, gonna either go to other family members (who won't get any additional support) or the foster care system. over $1300. (or the delta between $1300 and what she actually pays you).

i believe you are doing the right thing and the grand scheme of things. if you don't do another thing else you've been a huge blessing to this young woman. the issue is whether she knows and appreciates it.

the promissory note route might help. and having a frank convo about what she is risking if she don't turn it around / stop doing dumb shit.

but props to you for looking at it the way you did, and i truly pray that you and yours are blessed in return, and that that young lady turns her life around, and those kids have an opportunity to do better than the path that's currently in front of them.

peace & blessings,

x.

23. "A few additional pieces of information"
In response to Reply # 0

- My wife and I originally had the report set up as a hit and run, but since the cop taking the report is a friend we had it changed to a regular accident report. We have all of her information, insurance information and the name of her PO.

- I have a signed letter with amounts and dates of payment.

- to be clear the girl is the EX GF of the van owners Son. Her mother nor father are around and she stays with his family because she doesn't really have anywhere else to go.

- I thought she was on the phone too, especially because of how much of the side she swiped. 3 panels, back door, front door, and front panel, got them all. Came to find out she was in the house and heard her ex talking to some new chick and flipped out hopped in the car and sped off. She took the corner too fast, and a water bottle hit the floor and driving fast, angry, and she tried to reach for it. BLAM!!!!

- Honestly if I don't get the whole $1,100 back from this incident i'm ok with that. If it was a hit and run I wouldn't get anything. At the end of the day, the car is driveable, my kids are safe, and i have a job, a roof and wife that I love. None of that changes whether i get another $600.

- If I really wanted to hold her feet to the fire we just change the report, I have the homie go visit the house and haul her out. I'm not that guy though. She's a young girl that has made a few bad decisions, but she's young enough hopefully smart enough to understand that there is another way for her. That she can do better and come out of this on top.

- I refuse to have this girl going to jail on my conscience.

let's be clear...
her going to jail shouldn't be on your conscience one way or the other. She did that to herself. None of what she is dealing with is your fault.

That being said, i agree with how you handled it.

Folks don't really need to know that sort of information about us.

The fear of going to jail is huge for the girl, and I'd like to allow her the space to make this right.

We text a lot so things are in writing.

I want better for our kids man.

Even when they pushing lux whips it's pretty obvious...

To where the other car is parked. The car is on the street, but our place which is the end unit all the way inside is on the other side. So unless you either happen to be walking by the crib and look in and see the radio its not entirely obvious.

So if you have no clue who it belongs to, then you wouldn't know that the owner of the Cr-V is a cop, get what i'm saying?

You doing anything more would be like kicking an abandoned, fat
three-legged dog into a lake.

So its good you handled the situation the way you did.

You literally may have altered this girl's life for the better.

Someone needs to give her a very stern talking to though (not necessarily you). Someone has got to tell her that all of her 9 lives are used up.

Involved would've reacted differently to the situation.

Who's to say, I'm not the dude to try and end people for my gain, but I can't sit here and say that the fact that this is a young brown girl doesn't play into this for me.

cause it sounds like the law has gone relatively easy on her.

i'd probably do the same as you.
unless my own safety is immediately at risk, i don't really see the point of getting police involved in anything. if there's a way to settle it without them, i'm all for it.

Only time and her decision making will tell.

I'm tempted to really talk to her the next time I see her, and really find out what's going on with her.

The thing is though, i'm not willing to open my home to this young lady, so really a few words is all i have for her.

I hope its enough.

Since the last time the young girl has paid twice. She's still one payment away from finishing everything but she's been great about having documents to sign and the amounts correct. She's been pleasant and seems to be taking this opportunity to get right.

She thanked me again today for the route i chose to go with this. I feel good that she's owning up to this and paying.

She uses the Maryland online database that's open to everyone. So whenever you have a case it shows up with your charges and result of said charges.

We're finished, all damages paid off and the Cr-V is still rolling strong.

As I suspected she's a nice girl that made a mistake and is in the process of changing her life. Moving out of her exes house and working in some adult physical therapy spot.

I hope that this can be a jumping off point for the rest of her life.
