"Poll question: Long Island is..."

I have friends from my youth who ended up out there when we were in HS. Brentwood and Wyandanch, which were both kind of dumps. Then later, from out in Mastic, which is a genuinely disturbing rural slum supported by group homes, sober homes, halfway houses and crack houses. Now people I know live in Ronkonkoma, Middle Island and Coldspring Harbor.

What's strange to me about LI is that in some ways, it feels almost totally American, in a generic, flat kind of way. Drive down Sunset Parkway through Freeport, you could be in Toledo, Ohio. But at the same time, it's a uniquely New York interpretation of the suburbs, and its population reflects that.

I dunno.

Thoughts?

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

it's one of the last two. I have friends on Long Island and their areas are nice (Wantagh/Massapequa) but overall, I find Long Island to be sort of eh. I could never live there.

We can agree that Rosedale is part of Queens
What I disagree with is the LI association simply due to proximity. The neighborhoods look the same sure, but nobody from Rosedale is gonna be claiming LI the way Valley Stream would try to claim Queens in the late 90's/early 2000s. You're literally the first person I ever seen do that.

I just merely gave it a shoutout due to my own familiarity with the place not to mention its proximity to Valley Stream, so again, don't tase me ma.

I like the Hudson River towns on the New York side, the Metro-North > LIRR, traffic isn't nearly as bad, and whenever there's a serious storm or blizzard, LI and North Jersey get destroyed while the communities on the Westchester side of Long Island Sound fare pretty well.

Went out there once to play ball and go to a club later. So much suburban attitude, lol. A lot of dudes doing their best rap video imitation. Forgot what part I was in, and this was in the late 90s so times might have changed since then. Don't know, won't know because I'll probably never go to long island (outside of the two boroughs) again.

I think there's combinations of 'overdoing' things like drugs, crime, 'acting tough', typical of any suburban environment that needs to prove itself, as well as genuine examples of conditions that create instances of behavior typically thought of as 'urban'.

I've seen confederate flags out there, so it has severe disconnect with its neighbor in NYC, but there is a porousness between the city and the island that sometimes blurs or magnifies differences

when i first moved to new york. i was staying in Patchougue. i couldn't believe that it looked so similar to the atlanta suburbs where i had come from, or other middle america suburbs. very country/shabby suburbs.

my parents and a few aunts & uncles moved to Harlem but everyone else stayed in Long Island

then completely white bread relatives in Bay Shore who obey Treach's Ghetto Bastard manifesto about not coming to the ghetto

ANOTHER NAME DROPPING ALERT, PLEASE BE MAD ABOUT IT: relatives have personally known everyone from Craig Mack and EPMD to Azie Faison

so basically I'll never go to the super dangerous parts of L.I. but everywhere my family stayed was almost too boring. A big weed dealer in Wyandanch wouldn't last two weeks in Harlem

I flew in to Islip and stayed in Great Neck. We got lost on the way from the airport bc we drove east so I saw more of the island than I shouldve. That mug is huge (which I knew from reading maps).

The west part is, of course, Brooklyn. Then there's Queens (I stayed in Flushing once too) then Nassau and Suffolk, et al. Nassau is just like other suburbs I've seen in Chicago and STL and SF. Same with Suffolk. Nothing unique going on.

fuck you.

...it was to visit a friend who had cycled into a sober home out there from prison. Coincidentally, a guy I'd designed some stuff for owed me money. I figured I'd collect the dough first.

Dude, we drove down a dirt road without street lights, fucked out bungalow houses on either side. Legit crackhead zombies on some Walking Dead shit. Guy who owed me money sold coke and steroids to locals, and spent the entire time we were there peeking out his front window like Malcolm X, shooting crackheads with a bee bee gun to keep them away from our car.

Took that dough and bought my man and his girlfriends dinner at a cheap seafood spot nearby.

My wife was like "That was the first time since Iraq I seriously wished I'd had a rifle with me."

Mastic was real.

I gotta say we are on the come up. LI is the first place in NY to get a chic-fil-a! Yes Chic-fil-A is coming to LI. It will be out in Port Jefferson which is near Stonybrook University. Yes I know there is a CFA in NYU but that doesnt count. This is a full brick and mortar.
