"Steven A Smith is an uncle tom."

At least his take on Marshawn Lynch not talking to the media is some uncle tom shit. Larry Foote, who asked you nigga? Funny how any ole Jimbo player becomes a relevant voice whenever they express the side of the story that the media wants.

So they say "kids look up to him and he's behaving in a way that they can't emulate therefore he is using his platform incorrectly. He is teaching kids to challenge authority"

Word?

So, the media, through nfl policy, is your authority? He shouldn't be able to exercise his right to be fined for doing what he believes? The man who signs your check is your authority...

That's what they want to bring forth to the children.

Becuase what he is doing is unlikely to work in a real world setting then he should not do it.. does this apply to anyone who does things that are unlikely?

Everyone who is challenging any status quo should just stop, becuase if anyone decides they want to do what you are doing will probably fail at it..so stop. You are giving the wrong impression.

Marshawn Lynch is being the catalyst for young black kids to look at and continue to have a bad attitude toward authority.

Mike Brown must have been a Marshawn Lynch fan.

When the revolution comes, I will Spare no Toms. I was just hoofing man ass niggas

how is this post what's wrong? What gives Stepehn A the authority to come down on Marshawn the way he does? Malcolm balked at the "authority" as did Martin.

Are you more bothered by the "Tom" reference? Or the affect marshawn has on black youth? Please clarify.

I'm bother a bit by a Black man that wants to be respected as a professional, but continues to act like a teenager. No body make Marshawn sign that NFL team contract, but he did it know the full expectations that come with the job. However, once he signed his contract and gained some notoriety he's taken on a persona that is not professional and it does make other BLACK Athletes look bad. And if people want to argue against that perspective then they need to maintain that line of thinking on every front.

And please don't compaer Marshawn to Malcolm or Martin. There is not comparison.

Dude... the comparision was about balking the system. Sure, Marshawn signed an NFL contract. The rules state talk to the press or get fined, so he chooses the fine. I don't see the unprofessionalism that you speak of.

I am however, aware of the positive stuff he does in the community to help kinds and underprivledged. That I do know about. That is supposed to be what giving back is, right? To the people who matter and who benefit from his philanthropy... that is what a role model is, right?

I don't see him making folk, esp Black folk, look bad at all.
I wonder why Stephen A has so much to say in the negative about Marshawn and Josh Gordon but nearly cried a lung for jonny Manziel's rehab statement.

I think you have a negative viewpoint of Marshawn and thus anything that highlights the 'negative" you focus on. I base that on the statement above. You know me and know I value positivity. I was also a journalist in the service and I understand good journalism from sensationalism. Stepehn is more sensationalist and feigned outrage. I find it sad that he can't highlight the good things Marshawn does and seperate the media dude from the real dude.

He needs to do a much better job of that.

Arian Foster started this as the season began... we all forget about him and focus on Marshawn? Nah I don't buy it. Besides, the appearances are an obligation but not his job. He is not an entertainer he is a football player.

>But if you were paying a top talent to make appearances and

I don't really get this premise. It's like you are switching up speeds like Bruce Lee riding A Fugi in a movie. ...

You started off bashing him for lack of appearances and now you are talking about his brand...

Oh and for the talking head who doesn't care about his philanthropy (to which Case never really responded either) the kinds he helps cares and perhaps for Marshawn that's all that matters.

Listen. For professional athletes on THAT level sports and entertainment go hand in hand. Nobody saying its the WWF where things are scripted (but some have accused sports at this level to be that at some times) but to act as if its not sports entertainment is ridiculous.

I never responded because his philanthropic efforts are not the topic. The topic is his actions as a paid can contractual NFL representative.

He's unprofessional period. Did you see the SB press conference?

But Like I said, Marshawn and every player in the NFL is obligate to present the brand in a positive light and to act as a professional - accordingly. And if it was not his job, then he wouldn't get fined for his behavior. Right or Wrong?

Why is he getting fined if speaking is not apart of the expectation and contract obligation?

Exactly. Look where his spirit is. He's trying to live up to that Matthew 25:31-46. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.

I don't see anything in there about doing a dog and pony show at a press conference.

i get where you're coming from w/that but i won't agree w/the label.

however i do think Stephen is wrong about Lynch being a poor example for kids. especially since the majority of kids are far more likely to be influenced by adults and kids they actually know than they are by Lynch. so whatever his concern about Lynch's behavior w/the press - that concern should be alleviated by knowing that kids have coaches and mentors and parents who can guide them and advise them about how to handle themselves w/authority.

fuck you.

Biggest problem I have with this whole "situation" is that the media wants everyone to overlook everything Lynch does (including his community work and his positive work with kids)...all because he's only there because he doesn't want to get fined.

Shit's ridiculous

like ALL his teammates swear by him, his coaches love him, etc. He doesn't miss practice and he works hard.

His job is to play football. A reporters job is to sell football. He's not helping them with their job, so they're mad. Never mind the fact that they could do about two hours of research online and come up with enough content to do a story about literally anything.

Any outrage about lynch is comedy

w/his behavior. the journalists have som'n to write about - their feewings. and the NFL gets publicity b/c ppl are talking about Lynch and the press conferences.

everybody's winning.

but the NFL is mad and the journalists are mad b/c of the format in which Lynch is going about all of this. b/c he's being defiant. they want to teach him some kind of lesson. it's about breaking him. for some really ugly reasons.

Steven A you already know the deal

he just talks to be talkin...thinks he's still in the loop...but just as lost in the sauce as the rest of the media people... Arian Foster had em on the ropes

Larry Foote....nigga go take a nap....kids aint stupid...kids identify and 'look up' to those who they either can relate to, respect or strive to be like...
Marshawn checks off in a lot of those categories for ALOT of people and at the same time may rub others the wrong way...which is fine...and makes people...different ....something kids already figure(d) out

fuck the NFL (from a fmaily standpoint and an individual youth standpoint). If thats what THEY (the NFL) wish to aspire to, then great.

However, as a person, Im telling my folks, kids etc, to not worry or use NFL, sports, stars, musicians etc as inspirations.

As a kid I was a James Bond, Ali, etc fan..each time we had to write who our hero was, Id write my dad.

So I guess Id have this convo with Smith and tell him to change his words to a different diatribe of not calling marsh to the carpet over this dumb shit (when folks getting beheaded etc this dumb as shit) but change it to "stop worrying about marsh and make sure youre influneces are grounded"..now if he wants to clown Marsh for bucking the system then get on him for that but dont put it on the kids lol..or Mike Brown for that matter. That's deplorable.

it's the underpinnings of the opinions they put out there.

for example: Screamin' A could say something like "Shaq is the undisputed GOAT". I would disagree with him but that opinion wouldn't make him a "Tom"

but if he said some shit like "well, this (Black) dude was a fool for doing this because blah blah blah that means white folks wouldn't approve", then dooooooooooooooom dun dun dunna!

I see what you're saying and I don't co-sign similar arguments, but I stop using those phrases because being so free to throw the term around puts me on too high of a pedestal as if I'm above judgment myself and have authority to belittle someone. I think it's way too easy to get too self-righteous when you throw those terms around too freely.

There are plenty of examples in the business world of professionals flouting the rules and taking a fine as part of the cost of business to further their aims.

Only, in many cases it is far more important matters like tax avoidance and anti-competitive behaviour or other shady business practices.

To think that people want to come down on Lynch for making a stand about what he thinks is important. Doesn't matter if it's not important to those people, it's important to him, and he's man enough to accept the consequences that come from his stand.

Moreover, he is actually doing the media a favour by giving them something different to write about. I don't know much of anything about what any other player in the NFL says to the media, except maybe the odd Richard Sherman story. Lynch is all up in my feeds, making me think about American football and the Seahawks.

People don't like that? Good, they can stew in their disapproval and Lynch will continue to cook no matter what their holier than thou asses think.

Furthermore, it appears to me that he's more than happy to make himself available if you come along to give profile to the charities he supports. Good for him. God bless that man.

Just IMO though.

"he knows what hes doing and he's willing to take the consequence" as if that is supposed to be enough for people in their industry and the people who invested millions of dollars to the company, HIM and for any of these guys to have the lifestyle and freedoms (money) that the job creates. Such a ridiculous stance, Just say you like the man as a player and that he's taking a stance even one that doesn't make any sense. Cause thats really what it comes down to. You like the personality, you like the attitude and you like the guy/player doing it. But to act as if it makes sense is retarded.

It's his choice, not mine. Where did I say what he's doing makes sense to me? I said it's important to him to do what he's doing, and he's prepared to wear the consequences. That's enough for me. But, while I'm at it, I admire what he appears to be trying to do for his community.

Meanwhile, you can stew in your indignation, Lynch will keep cooking happily.

Lynch isn't speaking for black people when he acts like an ass who doesn't know that being available to the media is part of the job he agreed to.

He isn't a freedom fighter standing up to oppression. He's a guy who doesn't like an aspect of his job, nothing more.

Stephen A Smith shouldn't have to be burdened by cosigning everything a black man does. Let's stop giving Lynch the excuse that he doesn't like speaking, or he's socially awkward. As if a shy guy would be grabbing his nuts after a TD. There's plenty of ways to dodge questions, they have PR people who help with that if you want it.

Not allowing black people to openly criticize other black people out of fear of what it'll look like to all powerful whitey is an oppressed mentality that does more to hold us back than the initial criticism in question.

the problem though is that what you said about criticizing each other w/o fear of whitey's opinion cuts both ways in this case.

b/c it seems Stephen is upset about Lynch's antics b/c Lynch is teaching the babies to upset good white folk like the ones who run the NFL and sports media. that's why some wanna call Stephen a 'tom' for his comment - b/c at the heart it seems he's most concerned w/Lynch upsetting whitey.

Ok so what if the owner of the Seahawks and NLF were black. What would the situation be? Take out white people owning the league and team. Would it still be ok for Lynch to be doing what he's doing if you are looking at it just from a business position?

Would Stephen be a Uncle Ben? lol

This hypothetical is a silly exercise.

The fact that the all the team owners and senior NFL brass are white isn't an arbitrary fact.

The dynamic would be different if the owners were black but exactly how is hard to say because the situation is so far from that.

BTW, if the people in authority were all black I'd still say it's okay to do what he is doing but maybe I wouldn't think the Tom label is appropiate. Maybe.

except the NFL has fined him so it seems to care a bit.

but generally i agree - the ppl who are the maddest seem to be the sports journalists. the Seahawks owners don't care i think b/c if they did i think they'd act against Lynch. so far they haven't AFAIK. his teammates support him.

and if i owned the team or the league i hope i'd have no problem w/what Lynch has said to the press. and if i did i'd want someone i trust to pull me aside and have a Come to Jesus to help me get over myself. b/c i'd be in the wrong.

From a business perspective I think this is good for the NFL because it has people talking which the standard canned responses never get people doing.

But that really is beside the point. I give not an iota of fucks whether this hurts the Owners of the NFL from a business perspective.

Why would anyone care whether this hurts the NFL or Owners?

That's the Tom-ish aspect of this. Why would negroes be going to bat to protect the business interest of owners and the NFL?

Part of me is on Lynch's side because it is a black man against the White Authority Power structure.

If the power structure were not white white I'd probably care less and I might not say it's Tom-ish.

And to your point, I ultimately don't care THAT much about the whole thing because it all involves people making more money than me.

If McDonald's were forcing it's workers to only say positive things about it in the press or they'd doc their pay, I'd care more.

i would have no problem w/Lynch's antics if every owner of every NFL team was Black. i would have no problem w/Lynch's antics if my mother were the NFL commissioner. i would have no problem w/Lynch's antics if every journalist who covers Lynch was my favorite cousin.

But i'll stop. Cause clearly you want to be on that side of the argument and not talk about it truthfully that if you had any stake in the equation the way the white owners do that you would be okay with an employer acting like that LOL Fucking laughable agenda ass agenda mofos. Ride or die type of argument lol.

In short stop making it a social issue when its a business issue.

>But i'll stop.

you probably should. b/c you're out of your element here. your understanding of American race politics isn't sophisticated enough for you to be able to make the point you're trying to make.

Cause clearly you want to be on that side of
>the argument and not talk about it truthfully that if you had
>any stake in the equation the way the white owners do that you
>would be okay with an employer acting like that LOL Fucking
>laughable agenda ass agenda mofos. Ride or die type of
>argument lol.

you're doing that thing again where you mischaracterize my stance and then create a false motivation for the false stance.

so let me state my stance and motivation:

1. i enjoy Lynch's antics @ press conferences. especially his 'I'm just here so I won't get fined' and 'Y'all have 2 more minutes to look at me' lines.

2. i like that Lynch's antics make the NFL mad. b/c fuck the NFL. but not b/c they white. fuck the NFL b/c IMO the NFL is mad b/c Lynch is being so brazenly defiant as related to the media policy and is extremely talented on the field and is a great teammate by all accounts plus he's involved in charity work in his community. but the NFL is mad b/c Lynch won't dance the dance when it comes to talking to asshole sports journalists. as if Lynch owes those journalists anything. fuck them.

3. fuck those journalists who are mad b/c Lynch won't give them fodder to use against him as they see fit. the whole point of the media coverage of these athletes is to build them up and tear them down later. Lynch won't play their game by giving them quotes they can use to tear him down - of course they're still trying it. i like that Lynch prefers to allow his play and his other work to speak for itself. i think sports journalists think too highly of themselves, generally, and need to chill the hell out. if Lynch won't talk that's fine - there are plenty other athletes who will. so focus on them. leave Lynch alone if he doesn't want to speak. for whatever reasons.

4. yeah, up above i said something about how much i like that the only ppl mad at Lynch are rich white assholes. i can remove the white from it, really, b/c if they were rich Guatemalan assholes i'd still love this. if they were rich Aboriginal assholes i'd love it. the whiteness isn't what i'm in this for. i'm this b/c i like seeing these rich assholes act like babies b/c Lynch won't dance when they say dance.

fuck you.

I see what you're saying and would agree to it, but I honestly haven't heard anything like that from him. Maybe I missed it. Didn't think the quote in the OP was a real quote, maybe I'm wrong.

I was more referring to the type of backlash he and Jemele Hill have received for simply saying they think he's acting unprofessional, which can hardly be argued.

She's been called an Uncle Tom for that, when she's expressed nothing about making owners mad, etc. She just said it's unprofessional and journalists should stop entertaining it and embarrassing themselves, and the pitchforks came out.

I just don't want people to dismiss foolishness and make excuses as if it's progressive, since being afraid to call it out reinforces the power differences.

he shows up but doesn't answer questions. i'm fine w/it.

i'm in a profession where i do the same - i don't speak to journalists about open cases. they ask and i stonewall them. they get mad and i don't care.

In response to Reply # 0

The whole reason they're talking about him is because nobody else is doing what he is doing
there's hundreds of guys who talk to the media every game and say all the right things across every sport.
guys like Russell Wilson and Lebron who do exactly what the reporters what them to do
the media is CHOOSING to focus on Marshawn, AFTER he articulated very clearly that he is not going to tell them anything
then chastising him for not complying.
they can't have it both ways
either leave the nigga alone or don't say shit when he tells you he's not gonna say nothing
all this shit about him being a bad role model is bullshit
if you don't want people to see him as a role model, stop fucking talking about him everyday, ten times a day.
he didn't ask for the shit.
and the NFL aint in NO kind of moral position to be telling people what they should or shouldn't do.
they sign his check, so he gotta show up.
but that's it.
he putting his body on the line for his check.
and if he get hurt aint nobody gon give a fuck about Marshawn Lynch
so stop with the bullshit and move on.

the superbowl does numbers regardless
the NFL has been making it's product less fun for years (bannning celebration, trash talk etc) and seeing increasing profits
so that's kind of a weird argument

and the media can have it both ways
this way just makes their job easier
the media is going to win regardless because they create the narrative
marshawn doing that shit plays right into their hands
it's lose lose

the entire dynamic of making people talk to the media is troublesome to me

If Marshawn Lynch really wanted to be left alone........he'd give a standard interview.
dude's approach is about as counter productive as it gets
he's been in the league almost a decade and this has only been an issue these last two superbowls
what were his interviews like before hand?
yea no one knows because no one really gives a fuck what he has to say
half the ppl in this thread probably couldn't pick dude out of a line up 3 yrs ago
i light weight think this is a marketing campaign and marshawn and the media get paid off all of that

i'm sure he's sincere about his inner city charities and all that
but again his message and approach seem counter productive to me
being defiant to corporate authority is all good if you are privileged
or 220lbs with 10% body fat and can run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds
everyone else?
hmmm not so much
what meaningful lesson from this is he giving to the youth that he mentors?
