I entered my e-mail info on the Sling TV website when I first heard of this roughly a month or so ago. I get charged the fee if I don't cancel this coming Sunday. It works pretty good from what I've seen. I was exciting at first, but now that I have it, I don't really value it mainly because the talking heads at ESPN annoy me. I suppose I will get some joy when I get to watch NBA coverage on ESPN and TNT. It is nice to watch live cable TV on the Roku for a change.

the only reason i still have cable along with hbo. i'd need the other espn channels and nbcsportsnet, cbssportsnet etc.

but it's a cool idea and definitely a good option for people.

though i suppose you could still stream everything from espn3 since technically you have a cable subscription. anything else that comes on TV you can find on hulu and netflix. it's already sounding better to me.

ESPN 3 is still limited if you don't have an actually TV cable subscription, at least through the Watch ESPN app on Roku. It shows some free college and international sports events, but you don't get access to stuff shown on ESPN/ESPN2.

And there's some limitations to stuff with in regards to supplementing live TV with hulu and Netflix only. For instance, Justified is on neither hulu or netflix at the moment.

if you watch TV that much tho, by the time you add a couple of those you probably may as well have cable.

I think sling tv is useful if you need the flexibility.

but if you just don't like cable, sling tv has all the same problems, just a lower entry price.

unless you really like watching like half of these channels and that's what you want, it's either overkill or way under what you're looking for

I really have on idea what free on demand is. you usually get the stuff that's on the networks you pay for. there's some other stuff

but optimum is cablevision, which is a whole different company from comcast

Is Free On Demand gone for even the broadcast TV stuff from NBC/CBS/ABC also? It was nice to have the option to watch old episodes from the basic cable channels on Cablevision. How much is it to get On Demand for the stuff you are blocked from? I remember it costing $5 or so to get On Demand for the premium channels when I had cable TV. Remarkable how much Cablevision is nickel and diming folks.

I got it on Saturday. Watching Chopped on my lunch now. It's pretty good for my needs. We watch HGTV, Food Network, and CNN a lot. Plus, I can watch basket ball on ESPN and TNT. The only channels I wish it had was FX and USA.

We also have Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime. But I had these when we had cable anyways.

still where do you get your broadband from......the CABLE provider
they will just get you there, when i dropped all my cable on comcast they tried to raise my broadband price to $80 because it wasn't packaged with anything else (wtf)
basically you're still going end up coming off 3 digits between these lil packages and your net provider
who here is running a good package with a total cost under say $60-80/month?

I don't like that I can't watch on separate devices at the same time. My wife tried to pull it up on her phone and it shut off the feed on my laptop.

And I was this close to canceling cable for this, too.

My Sunday night cypher will be complete.

Swipe below:

Sling TV launches nationwide, adds AMC

By Cecilia Kang February 9 

Roger Lynch, CEO of Sling TV, announced the new Sling Television streaming service by Dish at the International Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas last month. (Reuters/Rick Wilking)

Sling TV launched its streaming service on Monday, saying that it will soon add AMC to its basic $20 online bundle of channels, which would make it the most complete offering of sports, news, premium shows and lifestyle channels for the Internet.

The streaming service by Dish Network doesn’t require a cable or satellite subscription, and for $20 a month it is seen as a disruptive force to the traditional paid television industry. Unlike the cable industry, the service doesn’t require long-term contracts or credit checks and can be canceled at any time.

Sling TV includes ESPN, ESPN 2, TNT, TBS, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel and CNN. At a later date, the basic package will include AMC, whose popular shows include “Walking Dead” and “Better Call Saul,” a premium channel that some analysts said was missing to make it a complete online offering.

Dish Network and its network partners have downplayed the risk Sling TV and other streaming service will pose to the traditional cable bundle. Disney’s ESPN is seen as the lynchpin to the cable bundle, but executives there say they believe Sling TV will mostly appeal to the estimated 11 million younger consumers who have never subscribed to cable and likely won’t in the future. ESPN has also put a limit on its participation in Sling TV, people familiar with the company’s thinking have said. ESPN is testing the popularity of the service but has put a cap on how many online-only consumers it will take on.

“There has been a remarkable expression of consumer interest since we first announced Sling TV one month ago,” said Roger Lynch, chief executive of Sling TV. “We believe Sling TV is a game-changing service that enhances the existing television landscape. Now underserved audiences have access to the best of live TV at an affordable price.”

in terms of non-cable live access, so hopefully that will get added. I was shocked to hear AMC is going to get added at no additional cost. Live access to ESPN and TNT is enough for the $20 tab IMO, at least from a basketball standpoint. I'm hoping Fox somewhere down the line allows for their cable channels to get this treatment as well. Would love to get access to FX, FXX and Fox Sports 1 live.

That $20 bundle is almost $1 per channel. An absolute steal given that this is the first iteration of live cable access in this fashion. I hope competing companies come around eventually to but Dish World's feet to the fire in a sense and force them to improve on what they are currently offering.

it didn't function well on my Roku and some channels took a minute to load up. If they could get it around the $15 level I'd be more inclined, but it's not bad for what they offer.

It's not perfect but it works well enough for $20. There are enough options to catch something & I get to watch live sports.

Having Sling now the kids are happy because they can watch their cartoons again.

HBO is coming to Sling TV this month

It'll cost $15 on top of Sling's monthly $20 subscription fee

By Chris Welch on April 1, 2015 01:22 pm Email @chriswelch

Satellite provider Dish has reached a new distribution deal with Turner Broadcasting, which will keep networks like TBS, TNT, CNN, and Cartoon Network available for its customers. But there's bigger news. This latest agreement also includes rights to offer HBO in new ways. Dish's Sling TV service will offer HBO — the proper channel — for $15 per month. Sling confirmed the news directly with The Verge. Both HBO's linear channel and video-on-demand content will be included for the fee, which is added on top of Sling's $20 monthly base price. The Wall Street Journal first reported the new agreement between Dish and Turner. Sling isn't saying exactly when HBO will become available; it's promised to switch on the channel before the Game of Thrones season premiere, however.

Dish has also secured itself the option of selling HBO's standalone subscription video service, HBO Now, according to the Journal. If Dish opts to become a distributor for Now (which apparently isn't on the table for launch), it would join existing HBO partners Apple and Cablevision. The long-awaited service is scheduled to launch sometime this month in time for the Game of Thrones season premiere. Apple is HBO's exclusive "non-pay TV," so you won't find it on Roku, Amazon's Fire TV, or game consoles for at least three months.

"Dish is unlikely to offer HBO Now at launch"

But traditional pay TV providers apparently have the option of getting in sooner; Cablevision hasn't yet specified when it will start selling HBO Now service, nor has it outlined pricing. Consumers will be able to subscribe through Apple devices for $14.99 per month. HBO has told The Verge that it currently has no plans to sell subscriptions directly, offloading the responsibility to its list of partners, which could eventually include Dish. We've reached out to both Dish and Sling representatives for more details.

The new agreement extends a short-term pact that Dish and Turner struck last fall after some of the broadcaster's channels were temporarily blacked out. It would've been a bad time for another disruption, with millions of college basketball fans looking forward to the coming NCAA Final Four games on April 4th. Those will air on TBS; TNT and truTV, another Turner network, will air broadcasts of the games catered to each school.

it's still a bundle, and you only get one channel.

you can get HBO from many cable companies, with more channels, for less than $45 / month.

I used the phrase because I was shocked and pleasantly pleased when I read the news last night. I do wonder if HBO will allow Sling to have access to the On Demand features from the start since Apple was promised that three month exclusivity with their deal.

As much as I like Sling so far, I wonder if any other companies will try to compete with Sling to offer similar access to live cable TV for cable TV cutters.

not sure if that includes HBO Go apps or anything.

HBO now doesn't have a live channel.
