Funny that the clip only highlights the bad part of her performance... It was done by a local TV show.... She had declined all interviews from local media while here... Smear campaign maybe?

Joni, Whitney, Lauryn.
But even tho they each didn't take care of their instruments due to lifestyle, in the case of the first three I think it's a bit like an athlete with some of the high-octave or power stuff.
Eventually that explosiveness goes like a baller's hops after a certain age combined with wear and tear.
For me with Mariah the death knell sounded at the MJ funeral when she didn't even attempt the big swings at the end of "I'll Be There".
Folks need to chill with acting like Mariah in her prime wasn't a legit vocal Dynamo tho.
I don't care how many YouTubes of her doing the Willie Mays in a Met uniform falling down in the outfield that these people wanna link up.
I ain't clicking and I appreciate what we got at their best.

Lauryn worked between the margins of hip-hop and soul, so even if her voice got a little rougher, it worked within the context of her sound...
But Whitney's voice was a shadow of its former self by the time she hit those drug abuse years...At times she sounded even shakier than Mariah ....

Before she had written any major songs she got on as a young soprano in the folk tradition, even yodeling and imitating instrument runs vocally.

By the time I saw Joni perform in the 90s she was a raspy alto only, onstage chainsmoking in a beret while sounding like Kathleen Turner singing "Summertime" by Gershwin.

The point is we didn't listen to Joni to hear her "blow"....U listened to her music because she was the master of telling a story...Her songwriting edged out whatever her VOX sounded like or morphed into from Blue on....By the time she started adopting more jazzy sounds (especially on albums like Hejira) she had long left that folksie, pretty voice, Judy Collins stuff way behind....Joni used her voice as classic stylist...Whatever the song called for whether it was a flowery register or deep and haunting she used it...

But her voice getting rougher had nothing to do with her lack of success or her not taking care of her VOX...And people didn't stop buying her records because her voice got harder...L Boogie's problem was that she crumbled under the weight of the music industry and the success of a career-crushing album...

Bomb, the crazy part is even when Whitney's voice became shot people were still willing to take up for her given we all knew the personal hell she was going through with drug abuse...WE knew why she could no longer hit those notes so we gave her a pass....
Mariah? Even with rumors of ol' girl turning up the bottle a lot no one ever viewed her shot voice as a victim of abuse or physical ailment....That's why people clown the hell out of her...Because they think SHE has wasted her vocal gifts....

Her career has self-destructed and come back to life several times....
So this lipsynching fuck up isn't the issue...
The problem now TODAY is Mariah's voice is shot. And for an artist whose main calling card is her vocals that's a serious problem...
Her upcoming Las Vegas residency is already on rocky footing...Low ticket sales and such...
Hopefully she gets her voice together....Because given that she was never an over the top performer known for dancing and wild theatrics Mariah's vocals were the main attraction....

I don't know what kind of deal she made with the devil, but even after having a huge problem with coke, her voice is still DEAD ON!! Blowing ALL these so called divas out of the water.
I'm assuming the surgery was for vocal nodules. That being said, for it to really work you have to change your lifestyle which Chaka appears to have done. I don't think Whitney was ready to give up all that shit for music.
it was nodule surgery. and i agree that Whitney may not have been ready for the lifestyle change and that could've factored into her hesitation to have the surgery.

This^^^is not the case....
The reason why Mariah lipsynching is getting major attention is simple. She's a star who is known for being a GREAT vocalist. Not a great entertainer, personality, hellraiser, dancer, ect....People expect lipsynching out of say Rihanna and the like.....
When it was pointed out that Britney Spears was lipsynching at her current Vegas shows people were like, "NO KIDDING???" It was not at all a shocker....Because she was never branded a vocalist. She entertained, danced and sung silly infectious pop songs....
The main reason u go to a Mariah show is to hear that much celebrated 5 octave range which has completely become shot...
Without her voice she is pretty much useless onstage....
