Portrait of Jason?

Still a good list, though. Still haven't seen Hollywood Shuffle. Killer of Sheep is top 5 all time Black films IMO.

these are movies that most of us Blacks have seen. these are movies that us Blacks are prone to quote when we get together.

these are not the 28 best Black films of all time.

we don't quote Killer of Sheep b/c we haven't seen it (note - i saw it in college during my Black film class).

fuck you.

It'd be a better spend of one's Black History Month to see 28 black films that actually are worth a damn.

While the TP movies and "urban comedies" are popular, none really have had much lasting value or particularly stand out like these movies do even if some are flawed or dated.

for black people of a certain age - "Beat Street" is a good example. We sat through that mess in college and unilaterally hated it. Its historical relevance is noted, but it's best remembered as a footnote than actually _seen_.

It's not here for _lasting_ cultural value or relevance. People will still be watching "Malcolm X" in 2040. They'll (unfortunately) still be watching "Purple Rain". "Beat Street"? Not so much.

I'd argue "Devil in a Blue Dress" is the same (especially since quite a few OTHER Denzel pictures could be listed in its place).

They debated between Sweetback, Shaft ,and Superfly for the "pioneering blaxploitation" slot - how they came away with Superfly - a film whose soundtrack is far, far better than its final release print - is unfathomable.

"Shaft" isn't the best picture in the world, but it's most traditionally watchable of the 3. Sweetback is a great work of art, but it's a tad bizarre for the mainstream - especially the modern mainstream.

Replace with any two of these:
-Antwone Fisher
-Imitation of Life (1959)
-Cabin the Sky
-Shaft (SHAFT is not on this list, but Superfly IS!??! On what planet is Superfly a better film?)

period.

but if it's removed it's replaced w/Dreamgirls - another important Black musical. or maybe Sparkle (the original).

and WTE can't be removed either. if it's removed it must be replaced w/another movie w/a bunch of Black women in it. so maybe Sparkle here if it didn't replace The Wiz, which it shouldn't.

fuck you.

Everyone seems to realize this but Black people over 35.

I don't care if MJ was the scarecrow. Jesus Christ could have played that part and it...well, maybe he'd've cast a miracle and made the film better, but you get what I'm saying.

If we must have a Black musical up there, put one that works. Cabin in the Sky or Stormy Weather. And that's really about it. Not The Wiz, absolutely not Sparkle, on the fence about Dreamgirls (I love it, but it's not a "vital" piece of cinema and there's a lot wrong with it that it doesn't need to be representative of "the black movie musical")

Waiting to Exhale is overwrought and poorly structured as a film (not every book works as a movie). The Women of Brewster Place is already present. If WTE has to be replaced with an A-A like (or something close to it), use Soul Food.

We know it's not a good movie. It's a fun movie to watch for most of us, that's the point. And a good enough number of us have seen it that it's a touchstone of Black experience - that's why it's listed.

Same with WTE. It's fun to watch and a good number of us have done so. That's the point here.

fuck you.

It wasn't fun for me to watch at age 7 (exact quote: "Why did they give the black people the dingy-looking version?") and it's not fun now. It's much more fun to watch bootlegs of the stage show.

WTE I recall finding thematically off-putting, nevermind its structural flaws. Sitting through it was an exercise in endurance.

Maybe it's fun to make fun of for being so incompetent.

Even further, it's a shame to have it as _the_ musical on the list. If it has to come to that, put Dreamgirls on instead, though really I'd put Carmen Jones there or Cabin in the Sky (nah, Carmen Jones) instead.

YES! That's it, player. It's that. Do you think we are so dumb that we don't know how bad the movie is? That you're the only one who can apreciate and recognize quality? We do too. We know it's bad. Dorothy looks like a 40 yr old woman. We know. Everything is ridiculous. We know. We laugh. It's fun.

And some of them sound a lot better done by different performers.

"Be a Lion" is actually tolerable when Stephanie Mills sang it. Diana Ross, not so much.

I actually felt it was painting a somewhat powerful and accurate picture, but if this abut quotables-- which I kind of doubt, then I can see why it's missing. I mean no ones quoting 12 years or Purple Rain.

"Harlem Nights" gets love because it had all those heavyweights together in it. Eddie, Richard, Redd, Della, etc. It's just not nearly as good of a movie as "Coming To America."

And I understand the point isn't to draft a list of my faves or the best. It's a list of the most beloved. The ones we quote at the barbershop. Card party. Family reunion. The ones we watch when we get together. The ones we all saw in the theaters. It's not about my preferences - it's about our shared/communal preference.

Spook doesn't belong as much as a movie like Malcolm X or even Cooley High. Though Spook is more worthy of viewing bc of it's revolutionary message. But niggers are scared of revolution. Maybe we didn't see that movie. So i don't think it's as deserving as other movies. That's all.

I suppose I should search that out. I saw "Killer of Sheep" a while back. Its odd I inadvertently discovered it when trying to figure out where the cover of Mos Def's "The ecstatic" album came from.

Interesting film though I would need to see it several times to fully digest it.

Don Cheadle's performance in "Devil in a blue dress", mos definitely one of the greatest ever.

It won Best Picture in 1967, and with one scene permanently pushed changed race-relations in American films over the threshold into a zone of quasi-respectability.

If you've never seen it, I won't spoil it for you - because it wasn't spoiled for me before I saw it, and thus I got to have a natural reaction to it.

needs to be removed.

(The Temptations is technically a miniseries as well - not sure if it's being broadcast on TV these days edited down to run as a three hour movie)

Apparently The Women of Brewster Place is a miniseries as well (I remember the spin off show; not the original miniseries). It needs to come off the list too.

The Last Dragon could be left off, though if a representative of 80s cheese is necessary, it can sub for Beat Street.

As for Imitation of Life, even though I suggested it too, it may not be "black" enough for this list.

How you gonna drop a film by a black female director told from the POV of black women to add a film with not a single woman in it?

SMH.

Boomerang would be in competition w/ COming to America for inclusion (at any rate, Harlem Nights loses)

Leave Sparkle off. Sparkle should probably be on their instead of The Wiz (at least Sparkle can blame its incompetence on a miniscule budget), but including neither would be even better.
