A year or so ago I had been going through the motions of living check to check and trying to paymy bills but not having any extra, and having small financial setbacks affect me in a big way.
Got tired of late fees, collectors, and being broke. I just said fuck it and stopped paying everything but my major expenses...mortgage, car note, etc
Letters came...straight to the trash
Calls came...ignored every number I didn't recognize
Settlement letters came...I paid off one or two if the balance and terms were reasonable.
But the most important thing is that I felt like I unplugged from the matrix and the sky didn't cave in. Still have my house, and my cars, and money in my pocket.
Now, I understand that my credit is probably trash and a small part of me wants to fix it.
So.....where do I start? Any advice for this black scourge of society?

i make decent money too, but a few bad decisions had me paying interest just to stay afloat and never being able to pay down on the principal.
thats the only reason i didnt fell bad about saying fuck it.
well, 2 reasons, one was that i had been paying for so long that they had got their money and then some.
two was that some of the harassment goes way too far, like, i get it...i owe, but calling me 6 times a day aint gonna make the money appear out of thin air

i dont even move when my house phone rings. those that know me, hit my cell...except my mom, who doesnt understand that the housephone isnt the be all and end all to communication..lol
i actually just jumped on creditkarma and its not quite as bad as i thought.
i mean, its still bad...low 600s
but all i have thats open is mortgage, car, student loans and an amex card that is utilized at 8%....everything is current
i have two accounts in collections, and they will probably never see a dime unless they come correct and offer a settlement i like
i have a shitload (20+) of old closed accounts though, most were paid off, a few were charged off, but none are old enough to roll off my report unfortunately

We need to teach our people about financial literacy, and work on reforming the system. It's criminal how one financial set back can ruin your life for years.
Pretty depressing. Seems like a complex problem. The people caught up in predatory lending were intelligent and middle class. Somehow they didn't see the sword of Damocles hanging above them until it was too late.
