Alexandra Shipp Tapped to Play Storm in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’
Jan 22, 2015 By Rhonda Nicole

Looks like Alexandra Shipp is slated to take the reigns as storm in the latest installment of the X-Men film series, X-Men: Apocalypse, due in theatres May 27, 2016.

Shipp, most recently known for her portrayal as superstar Aaliyah in Lifetime’s 2014 biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, will be joined on the silver screen by Sophie Turner, who will play Jean Grey, and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops.

X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer announced the casting earlier today via his Twitter account, calling the line-up “our brilliant and young mutants.”

Aren't there better light-skinned actresses out there, IF they felt they had to cast a younger Halle instead of getting a brown-skinned girl?

I got no problem with it. She could pass for a younger Halle who is the cinematic Storm.

All of the other characters are cast with the younger actors that sorta resemble their older counterparts, so hey, go with it.

and by "receipts", I mean the audition tapes.

Does Bryan Singer think he can draw a convincing performance out of this young woman, given her most recent work?

I don't think she was that bad as Aaliyah, but they could have done a more extensive search for sure.

I guess my comment is more about them not finally casting a brown skinned actress as Storm. Just like J-Law was the younger RRStamos, I figure if they are going with younger versions of the cinematic versions of the character, they'd go with a lighter Storm rather than throw it out of wack with a brown-skinned woman.

However, they could do an interesting sub-plot by casting a brown skinned storm in the younger version and then have her caught up in the skin bleaching craze that has taken Africa by what????? -STORM- And then BOOM! drop a Halle cameo in a mid-credits scene.

and to be clear, she doesn't have much else on her resume other than that biopic, that "Drumline 2" for VH1, kids' TV shows, and "Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel."

She's also in the upcoming "Straight Outta Compton" too.

Dear God. That 5 foot Canadian is not a compelling enough character in the MCU to carry franchises.

Thus, First Class > all the X films. Because he's not in it.

That said, they didn't give Storm anything to do in any of the movies except the time she fought Callisto or whatever that incredibly fine Dominican girl was supposed to be.

Sample Storm Lyric:

Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning?

The same thing that happens to everything else.

If for some reason, some indie company was able to make that movie, I would garnish my checks for the next ten years to help fund it. But only if whoever made it was Robert Rodriguez faithful to the book.

although the character is African, she's usually drawn on the light side of brown-skinned

They cast a black actress to blay a black character

They just cast a black person for a character that may as well appear as "mystical black chick" in the script.

No matter what, they were gonna cast a young Halle Berry type.

Honestly, I'd've been fine with an unknown.

Heck, I'll be fine with Alex Shipp if she can do a good job. But it'll take some doing to wipe her vacant stare in that Aaliyah movie from my mind.

They lazily cast a big name in Berry the first time & didn't give her much to work with.

They still not in interested in properly using Marvel Comics most well known black character...

They coulda got Lupita or even a fake Lupita but nah, they gave us lightskin baby Storm. Man, fuck these X-men movies

basically grace jones but younger
after clicking the OG link i was going ask if storm was biracial or something
but i think that's answered above
they just going after light skin chicks for this
which is kind of hustling backwards
if storm is a mutant and supposed to be intimidating why wouldn't you want a harsh faced dark skin jawn for that
even the jawn with the sword from walking dead would be more believable then these chicks they are casting

Her first starring role is preparing to be shot.

How could she cost too much?

Even if her agent tried to get her the big money, she'd be talked down in order to get the budget under a certain number. Jamie Foxx's people tried to get him $15 mil + backend and perks for "Dreamgirls" right after he won the Oscar; he ended up getting something like $3 mil, if that.

How much do you think she makes per film?

And how famous do you think she actually is? Famous enough to carry a tentpole movie with a $150M budget? About a character most ppl dont care about outside of the context of the team?

Maybe after Episode 7, but today...not investing that amount of money into "Storm" starring Lupita N'yongo is NOT bad business.

But I know she can act & she'd better evoke Storm than anything we've seen so far in live action

You don't need the biggest names anyway, especially if the picture movies are really good. If the talent for the principle character isn't even all that expensive, than all the better for the big budget

It's not like audiences were clamoring for Iron Man & Guardians of The Galaxy before those movies, so yeah I think a Storm movie could be successful

and to be fair, it's not like I think Storm is the only marvel mutant that I'd like to see & believe could lead their own successful films

I like Gambit; I hope they make a great movie cause I always thought Remy was really cool but it's not like most people care about that character outside out the X-men anymore than Storm
