I've always struggled with this because up until I was like 23, my cousin cut my hair for free...thereafter, he charged me like $10 a pop since I was making money. Then since I moved out of my hometown years ago I've kind of had to fend for myself in figuring this out and I get conflicting theories.
When I briefly lived in Manchester NH, my haircuts were $12 so I generally gave like $15 or $16 total.
Now I'm back in Boston and my haircuts have been $18 pretty consistently. Now I would think that $22 or $23 total (nearly 28% tip) would be more than enough. But I have this asshole friend who's insistent that if you don't just leave $25 you're a "real dickhead" (exact words). Which to me is patently absurd. You're telling me I need to leave this motherfucker nearly 40% for taking 10 minutes to give me a high and tight?! Fuck outta here!
Now, generally I do just leave $25, especially if that's the exact change I have, cause I feel cheap asking for $2 back or whatever. But if I have 2 $20 bills, I'll ask for $17 back and won't feel at all bad about it. It's not like I'm getting hour long hairstyles and full head massages and shit.
What say you all? I could totally be in the wrong.

The whole "tipping" bullshit in general is so backwards and stressful. So unnecessary. Just build the shit into your prices so I don't have to worry about it. And so I don't have an extra hit of like $50 every weekend after my credit card charges finally clear.
Tipping is the most annoying American cultural nuance.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm UNDERtipping him,because he makes it seem like his customer base is high-end :-/ Maybe I need to find a barber outside of Manhattan...
But I guess right in Manhattan nothing costs $20 or less haha.
Anyway - I imagine your barber spends a little more time touching you up than mine does. The place I go is literally called "Fast Eddie's" and he lives up to the name. In and out in 10 minutes or less, literally. Which is why I think it's ludicrous that someone would think I'm a "real dickhead" if I don't tip the mufucker 40% on an already expensive haircut.

I used to get my hair cut by this old ass Italian guy at a proper old-school barber shop. It was such a great deal, cut and a hot shave for $20. The guys were really thorough, I usually went to the partner and not the owner, who had to be 75 if not older.
He sold it to some guy who had been studying jazz and classical music but earned his living cutting hair. Holy fuck, the prices tripled within about three years. I used to go back and Sal, the other old Italian guy that stayed on, almost felt guilty asking me and always cut me a deal because I came when Harry was still there.
My barber in Cali charges 18 for a cut and 24 with a beard trim. I usually shoot him $21 or $28 off that.

That's really the only reason I go to the barbershop...so my son can see (black) men argue and have dialogue about the most trivial of sh*t. Ain't nothing as funny or ignorant as that dumbsmart barber wisdom. Muhphucka knows everything under the sun and how to do it, but yet you sittin' back thinkin' to yourself "then why are you cuttin' hair?".

If it's all quiet like a Barnes and Noble bookstore and you can actually hear the tv---you need to find another shop and get to enjoying what a barbershop is.

i'm not in there to chit-chat. i want my hair cut and i want to be out of there.
i just left a shop that's too slow w/the cutting b/c the barbers and customers are too busy chilling and shit. i could never spend less than 3 hrs in there for a cut - including wait time. and i never wanted to spend 3 hrs of my life on my haircut. i preferred the shop i used to frequent at lunch in the Loop - they were good w/the jibber-jab but kept the cuts moving at the same time. b/c the staff understood that most of us customers are working men who have somewhere to be and don't have 2 or 3 hrs to spend in there hanging out. they were good w/appointments and their cuts are quick. the bldg they were in was foreclosed and the shop bounced around and lost barbers and i stopped going. that was the dream shop for me.

Im in Richmond, Two up and Down and its pretty standard its 20
then there is a spot on broad that is 20 and then they ask for a tip... mind you you can get a cold beer and watch espn while you waiting... the only issue i have is ..well two issues...
1. why is it always 20 when sometimes im just getting a round up shape up...
and then
2. a lost of these dudes use this black spray mess to cover for the fact that they cant line you up straight. yeah it looks go for a hot second until you get down the street then you see its messed up..
If I had that spray myself i would probably use my own clippers
