"D'Angelo on SNL!"

Very excited to see D'Angelo perform on Saturday Night Live on January 31. Wonder what he will perform. Been wondering if he would make a tv appearance. Glad to see it is high profile. love D, but felt like these live versions could def still stand to get tighter
and even if we're just talking about SNL performances, i cant even say this was the best of THIS season (kendrick still has that)

The performances sounded exactly like the record to me, tighter than that ?

Structually he kept the tracks the same as the album
But the delivery was sloppier
(Not saying the performance was sloppy - it just didn't hold up to the recorded version, and it didn't change it up enough to not be compared to that or make it its own thing)

As as as not changing the the songs up much, my take on that is this. Given that the album is still quite new and the SNL performance is all about reintroducing him to the public at large, it makes sense he would keep the songs pretty much exactly like the record.

Stray to far and you alter expectations one way or the other, IMO its best to keep those songs as straight forward as possible. Now when D is on tour it won't surprise me if those songs are extended and changed up (Prince was a master at this) though who can say for sure.

complained about when discussing the album. He was clear and didn't sing as high as he normally does (he calmed down that falsetto) but sonically he sounded as good as his album does...which is because he records his albums "live" also.

this is funny because most ppl were like "i can hear what hes saying now"

exactly!!

I was digging the symbolism in the "Charade" performance. The chalk outline on the stage, fists in the air, D had the US flag draped across his back.

The Really Love joint was kinda corn-ish with the outfit and formulaic "grab the mic
and walk in front for a spell" thing... looked like a junior high talent show performance whilst
rocking an outfit that would get a mfka clowned for the rest of the school year.
Not bad but just very safe, I guess. He could have been really nervous performing on
nat'l tv after all these years tho. I'll give him a pass.

Charade went hoard tho... very nice performance.

His voice sounded really good on both songs as well.

i really liked it before, but with the visuals, the clarity of D's vocals & the changes/darker feel to the backup singers' vocals in the 2nd half really did it for me.
