"D'angelo & The Vanguard Black Messiah.. a month later after release"

Thoughts ?
favourite tracks?
was it worth the wait?
does it fill that missing void?

I think its s solid album I thoroughly enjoy like 10 out of the 12 tracks and love how they flow from beginning to end. I can't get into prayer, but I haven't really gave it a good listen.

Also I think Back to the future 1 & 2 is the same song they just faded it out towards the end to avoid having a long as track. If you notice part 2 fades in exactly were part 1 faded out.

lastly does anyone else notice that glitch on Really Love at the 3:42 mark, sounds like a cough or a missed rim shot?

Oh yeah this is not gonna hold me for another couple of years to a decade I hope he has a follow up within a year or so.

and it does fill a void for me

It's been awhile since an artist has put together a piece of work that requires you to actually listen to the music

Initially, I was hooked on Charade but lately I've been really feelin 1000 Deaths and Back to the Future 1.

So I probably haven't listened in a week because the first 2 weeks it was out. I was constantly playing it. On my way to work. At work. On my way home for work. After some puff when I got home. It got to be too much. But I really do love it. I wish the vocals were clearer, for sing along purposes, but... yeah.

Favorite tracks:

Ain't that easy
The Charade
Really Love
Betray My Heart
Another Life

?uestlove was talking about an expanded edition. I need more info on that.

that said....8 outta 10. i listen to it multiple times a week, sometimes multiple times a day. the songs i love i love.

still can't get into 1000 Deaths.

i agree with Back to the Future I and II. which kinda cheapens it to me. Plus the Door and Back to the Future II sound alike to me, and that makes the last 3rd of the album kinda....off. but i love it.

the Charade is brilliant.

my sleeper favorite song is Till its Done.

musically its great, but it could have been better with a little CLARITY and DICTION.

most of us grew up listening to HipHop where lyrics are oftentimes indistinguishable moreso than any other genre makes it all the more puzzling to me why ppl keep complaining abt the lyrics...

What rap album you got where you can't make out at least 50% of what's being said?

Falcons, Braves, Bulldogs and Hawks

OutKast, Gang Starr, UGK, Mobb Deep and Eightball & MJG

When Das EFX first dropped, no one could really make out what they were saying...but we knew it was dope whatever it was. Same thing w/Fu-Snickens...

Sometimes I can't make out what Buster Rhymes is saying due to his rapid-fire style.

'Twista' is another rapper whose lyrics I never understood

How abt 'Bone Thugz In Harmony' - til this day I can only understand their hooks, but not their lyrics

There's plenty others...those are just some off the top of my head.

Rap lyrics aren't always distinguishable and no one complains

The point being: if you really can't understood the lyrics to 'Black Messiah' then go pull them up online and learn them. That complaint abt the album doesn't make sense to me.

Hip Hop fans don't complain, but that's always been one of the main criticisms I've heard of the genre.

understand lyrics in HipHop are older ppl, as in like my parents generation, and non-fans of the music.

Or at least I've never heard anyone complain abt not being able to understand a lot of the lyrics in HipHop as much as I keep hearing ppl complain abt not being able to understand the lyrics on 'Black Messiah'

This is 2015, if someone really wants to know and learn the lyrics to this record just google them and print them out

>Hip Hop fans don't complain, but that's always been one of
>the main criticisms I've heard of the genre.

Are any of those rap artists you named legendary? D is supposed to be a legend. One of the yodas (Jimi, Marvin, James Brown, Bob Marley, George Clinton, Stevie, Al Green, Aretha, Miles, Nina Simone, Joni and Prince) so I can see why people have an issue with indecipherable lyrics even though it doesn't bother me much because his music is so damn good IMO.

clear. He isn't singing any more mumbled than he did on Voodoo, it's just because all of this was new that it stood out while on the old stuff we know what he's saying. I listened once while reading the lyrics (and there are some really good lyrics on this album) now I can understand what he's saying just as much as his old stuff...

Even with his past mumbling, I was able to understand what he was saying from the jump without the aid of reading his lyrics. He sounds like he's purposely mush mouthing on this album.

went back and listened to Brown Sugar & Voodoo and the vocals are really bothering me. It works on some tracks, but some songs could really use clarity.

That said, my favs are Prayer and Another Life. The Door is the only dud and i don't listen to it at all. Still, I'm glad to have new music from him & it's just what was needed at the time.

worth the wait? eh. it's a great album that clearly didn't take 14 yrs to make. but still, it's great.

'Back to the Future', 'Another Life' and '1000 Deaths' are my current faves.

i used to skip 'Prayer' and 'The Door' but i don't now. i've spent time w/the album on a recent road trip and i got into those 2 tracks.

now i wanna see a concert. i've found video clips of D performing several of the songs but i wanna experience it live in person.

fuck you.

It's not different from when artists used to have reprises towards the end of albums. That said, I still rock it. Back to the Future is still my ish, along with The Charade, Another Life and Betray My Heart. It's fills the void to me as modern funk album. I mean, I hard pressed to think of other recent albums that fall in that genre.

simultaneously frustrating & glorious

that stiff dominating bass line doesn't breath until 2 plus minutes in.

covers up the drums...

I wonder how Pino felt about playing this or if the bass line will be kept so stiff during live performances

All is made right when the bass line changes though...shit is AWESOME

the chorus of 1000 Deaths is my favorite... should be longer

now that I see there's lyrics online, I might like more of it. I'm a fan of his vocal layering and harmonies, but its hard if I don't know what he's saying.

>Thoughts ? Ridiculous piece of work IMO.

>favourite tracks? My favorite track(s) changes with each spin. All in all, I can say that I really have no favorite. It's just a complete piece of work.

>was it worth the wait? Yes. I think it was in The Lesson where someone said that it seems like an effortless progression from Voodoo. IMO, it is so good that I really don't even consider the wait. It's almost as if it didn't happen even though I know it did.

>does it fill that missing void? Per what I said above, I would say that it does.

I bammed out to this on a recent roadtrip to Hampton, VA and back up the Eastern Shore of VA and MD. The singing was complimentary to instruments. It's nowhere near overpowering from a vocal perspective. The musicianship is primary to me. The music is Coltrane on the sax while the singing is the guy in the back on the glockenspiel. JK... You get the gist though.

I like that all his albums have a different sound and vibe. I wish the lyrics were clearer, especially since they so thoughtful and creative. But that's his style I guess. Hopefully he'll release more music in the near future.

Very good. So many layers to it, I don't think I'll have a definite assessment until Spring. Took months for me to warm up to most of Voodoo.

For the most part. Not understanding the words bothers me a bit. I haven't sat with the lyrics yet, tho.

The only song I don't love is The Door, it's a pleasant enough song but it doesn't do much for me.

Rare is the album that only has 1 song I could skip (maybe I'm fussy I don't know lol) so I think it's going to stay a personal favourite.

Better than Voodoo? I'm not sure but it's going to deserve a title shot soon.

Favourite song 1000 Deaths

The album is called Black Messiah. I am not white or black but I wonder, is there a unified black voice in today's society that is clear and distinguished? A leading voice of hope and change as any messiah would bring? I am probably just reading too deeply into things as always, in which case, you should completely ignore me.

>Thoughts ?

Really good album with lots of good songs to dig into. I'd love to hear the vocals with less shenanigans on them to decide for myself if I'd be better off with more clarity. I know for sure that it would make my street-teaming efforts easier. But hell...I rode around with the booklet to Voodoo for months. And I'd sit in the car with it and just listen over and over..I damn near studied that album.

>favourite tracks?

Most of em could be my favorite at any time. For now...

Till Its Done: The 'groove'. The drums. The vocals. It all 'goes together' better than anything else on the album (besides Really Love). The Marvin Gaye 'what's going on: all in one song'-ness of it. The La la laaaaaaaaaaaaaaa part is special. 'Are you there?' gets me every time too.

I turned a corner on Sugah Daddy BIGTIME. That's the song I listen to over and over most often now. The way the 2nd verse ends with the 'meaningless romance' line but he just keeps coming up with stuff to say about how cold the chick is and how he's convinced that he's gonna evade his better judgement at least long enough to be her sugah daddy. 'She crossed her fingers when she said her vowwwwws'. Cold-blooded!

Another Life..If I'm ever gonna be a big rusty dude crying at a concert, it'll probably be sometime during this song. I'm almost not overwhelmed by it anymore but I still dig it so much. The 'E' rhymes throughout! The way he extends the 'E' to say 'sleep' on the 1st verse and 'compete' on the 2nd is so piercing to me. The sitar. The dueling D'Lo part at 4:30. And the wording is so longing and submissive to the desire..cats don't crush on chicks like that on record anymore. Mack Wilds was kinda there but not at this level. Cats are too cool for this type of Winnie Cooper/Kevin Arnold but grown shit. "I got a craving for confection so swEEEEEt". "I wanna touch in all the placing the plEEEEEase". Just grand.

>was it worth the wait?

The idea that D'Angelo was no more had all but sunk in with me YEARS ago, so I wasn't even really 'waiting' anymore per se. So the fact that this album exists AND I like it...it has to be a yes. I refuse to not appreciate it even if I can now admit to being selfishly ticked that a damn good artist like D fell into all that he fell into to make his catalog have this big of a gap. He's basically been absent for my whole adult post-college life until now. Bullshit! And it drifted me away from most of his catalog. One Mo Gin, Heaven Must Be Like this, Untitled, Lady and Dreaming Eyes of Mine almost pissed me off at some point. That's my pre-BM D'Angelo top five probably.

>does it fill that missing void?

Probably not. But it easily reminded me that I had been operating WITH a void. AKA it let me know that I had been bullshitting with the way I had been listening to most music because I could get away with sleep-listening to most stuff without missing too much. My speakers in the car were aight but they weren't real. Not using the M50x joints for all music was a lazy mistake. The 15" old school floor speakers I have in the living room weren't being done justice or getting the proper work.

This shit reopened my listening pores and said 'naw...you're gonna listen! You're not too cool, smart, musically aware, and/or jaded..and if you are, cut it out and just listen!'. I do that for certain artist and every now and then in general, but I had been slacking.

I love feeling the way I felt in 2001 when I was late-passing mad 70s albums.

Or when I was 6 years old listening to Thriller OVER AND OVER again with the album cover and words sitting in front of me.

Or when I was in high school and I 'rediscovered' Prince with my more aware ears and realized that he had ran a LOT of stuff by me as a kid.

Side: My parents would skip Barry's Love Serenade when I was around, so I basically didn't hear that song until I was older. I'd hear 'TAKE IT OFF' then someone would get up and take the needle off by the time he was saying 'panties'. I knew something was up.

I also remember the feeling when I got old enough to REALLY love the mood of Maze. Golden Time of Day, Happy Feelings..you know, that old close your eyes and see sunset and just love life shit. Black Messiah gives me some of those feelings again. That's gotta be good for me.
