"Tech Talk: Wearables = LOL + SMH"

SO I got this LG Android Watch for Christmas. I figure it's kind of a prototype for an Apple product that will eventually launch this year. That is, I am sure that the Apple product will be more feature laden, better designed, more polished but functionally very similar.

I see one very convenient feature about this watch. When I get an incoming notification. I can conveniently glance at my wrist instead of fish around in my pocket.

Other than that I haven't seen anything that could possibly represent a killer app (fitness monitor? phone remote control?)

That's a worthwhile feature and I am pretty sure at some point in the near future it will be possible to tether all digital watches to your phone and get a similar convenience.

I also think wearables will be ubiquitous in the near future, but I don't think they are game changers. Extensions of your phone, but not a whole new category in and of themselves.

If you have way following CES though folks would have you think that wearables such as watches are the next Big Thing like smartphones were.

I don't buy it.

I heard someone else say it but we have probably underestimated the impact of smartphones and they are one of those once in a life game changers so we shouldn't expect anything with nearly that impact anytime soon. Kinda sucks for Apple which is expected to drop products like that every other quarter but oh well. I am sure the cool kids will gobble up the Apple watch when it comes out as status symbol accessory but I don't think it will be an indispensable way of life though.

My prediction: Bigger deal than 3D TVs. Less of a big deal then tablets.

Thoughts?

if you have the rectangular one, someone got it for you on discount/closeout because LG released the round one a few months after the launch of the rectangular one.

The round one is MUCH more polished and feature rich....

best example of an android watch. For instance you can't even read messages on it when you get the notification. I am sure that won't be an issue with later watches.

But this phone gives me the general idea.

This coming from the guy who does this for a living (or peanuts who can tell) who told us that everyone would be watching 3D TV and using touch screen desktop computers by now. SMH.

I wait for the three word juvenile response.

watch feature could be added that could make them more indispensable.

What feature that is more than just a short cut from reaching into your pocket and pulling out your phone?

also, use the watch for payments like buying coffee or riding the metro. or like a key to open doors. use it to open and start the car. basically stuff you don't really need to go in your pocket to get... keys, credit card, etc...

They seem to be more useful in situations where one CANNOT use their hands. Most folks only drive, walk or ride transit, and drivers and walkers have proven that they will just stare at their phone while driving and walking.

I'd like a nice smart watch to wear when riding my bike. Something that can show me the time, incoming calls, my current GPS information, bluetooth control for my headset, etc. Even better if I can sync one to a a GoPro or something similar (to start/stop recording). I need something that I can't drop, won't get messed-up if I drop my bike, is weatherproof and simple to use.

If I can get one of these at a good price, I'm buying.

I've said this before on this board: China has actual watch phones that we can import. They've been available for years over there. Wake me when those are a thing here in the US.

Wearables are lazy niggas devices. It's too much trouble to pull your phone out now? You're really that busy??? Life is just sooooooo hectic that the act of pulling out the phone will inconvenience you?

FOH. It's a stupid gadget for stupid people.

After seeing "the next big thing" come and go over and over, you tend to look at each new thing differently.

The Apple Newton was supposed to revolutionize everything, but fizzled out fast as fuck.

DAT was supposed to forever replace analog cassette and way hyped to the point where you thought everyone would be listening to DAT... Fuck a CD. 20+ years later and we still have CD's and the only place DAT took off was in recording studios. There was also a format called DCC, Digital Compact Cassette, which should have done the job that DAT couldn't since standard cassettes were compatible with DCC players. It died even faster than DAT.

How about Iriduim? You know, the satellite phones you've seen being used by the military in Iraq and Afghanistan? That was supposed to be positioned to make cellphones obsolete... Yeah... The only places you see 'em are military deployments or people going to extremely remote areas of the world... (full disclosure: I worked on several projects that utilized the Iridium satellite constellation, the phones, and modems based around those phones)

And I can go on for days... The AT&T EO, Net PC's (in theory, it's what a Chromebook is nowadays), NeXT computers (Steve Jobs' utter failure of a platform, part of which lives on in OSX), OS/2, and all types of shit. Right now, it was predicted by a fairly notable technology figure that we would ALL be using Sun Microsystems SPARC based computers running an os called GNU, not Windows or MacOS based anything.

I've seen a lot come and go. Most things simply don't stick around even when it's clearly a superior product to what's currently available (Betamax/Hi-8, HD-DVD, Windows Mobile/PalmOS/WebOS...).

I could be wrong though, but I simply don't see how these things can take off.

Not sure if you were alive or old enough to remember that time (1987), but Sony positioned DAT as a replacement for analog cassettes.

(they were exclusively RF-based for the longest, and the controllers were actually attached to the console; making them modular was an improvement IMO)

though they had cool add-ons like the Disk System (and a system of game rentals/sales tied into it). Lot of cool "combo" consoles combining the two.

the Super Famicom had a lot of cool add ons like BS-X and Satellaview. I still think the look of the Super Famicom >>>>>>>> SNES. In the UK and elsewhere in Europe their SNES was the same look as the Super Famicom but PAL-based of course

(one thing I'm glad for with the advent of HDTV... the end of that "different video standard" BULLSHIT)

The infamous Redman edition of MTV Cribs showed him with a lil ass flat panel TV he got while he was in Japan at a time when you would have been hard pressed to have found even one person that even knew such a thing existed.

Payng all their bills and getting concert tickets at 7 Eleven and shit lol. Can't beat our fighter jets though so I guess it balances out-- on second thought if they were allowed an army they probably would have transforming planes by now.

People are happy because it's possible to order pizza from their smartwatch.

Let's go over what's available:

Eyewear
Watches
Fitness trackers

Out of that all I see is a passive use for eyewear. Everyone is overestimating this alleged market for smartwatches. These devices are new ways to stunt for the next generation.

Think of the smartwatch as a remote display for the phone. While you talk into the watch, the phone still does the work. The phone tells the watch what to display via bluetooth.

Basically. The sad part is that, over in China, they got a bazillion better looking smartwatches than the shit that's being pushed here.

I mean... Look at this bitch here

http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/IDO-Bluetooth-4-0-waterproof-android_60139080528.html

Aluminum and steel construction with a sapphire surface. If I was into shit like this, I'd cop this and keep niggas guessin' where I got it from.

It was a crap design (industrially speaking), but the number of privacy related issues it could raise of valid concern. Never mind that if there was an easily affordable variant too many cops and other assorted officials could get into plenty of hot water.
