"Triumphant MLK biopic, "Selma" directs itself (Ostar Nominations)"

I mean that's the only way it can be a worthy of a Best picture nomination and not a Best Director nomination, right?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2015/01/15/2015-oscar-nominations-complete-coverage/

All of awards season leads up to this: The Academy Award nominations were announced Thursday morning in Los Angeles.

Wes Anderson has crossed over from art-house darling to academy favorite. The auteur’s offbeat dramedy “The Grand Budapest Hotel” scored nine nominations equaling the unconventional, genre-defying movie, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Birdman” for the most nominations.

The most obvious snub was “Selma,” Ava DuVernay’s moving biopic about Martin Luther King Jr. Despite a nod for best picture and best original song (for Common and John Legend’s recent Golden Globe-winning “Glory”), the film’s director and actors were shut out in their respective categories. David Oyelowo missed out on a best actor nomination, but more surprisingly, Avu DuVernay was not acknowledged in the best director category, a nomination that would have been the first for an African American woman.

Nominations (by movie):
Birdman – 9
The Grand Budapest Hotel – 9
The Imitation Game – 8
Boyhood – 6
American Sniper – 6
Whiplash – 5
Interstellar – 5
Foxcatcher – 5

The list of nominations for the 87th Academy Awards

Best Picture
“American Sniper”
“Birdman”
“Boyhood”
“The Grand Budapest Hotel”
“The Imitation Game”
“Selma”
“The Theory of Everything”
“Whiplash”
Immediate reaction: The academy can nominate up to 10 movies, but stopped short with eight this year. Most of these are what the prognosticators expected — “Birdman,” “Boyhood,” “Selma” and the big British biopics, “The Theory of Everything” and “The Imitation Game.” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” which won a best picture award at the Golden Globes is starting to look like an unstoppable force. And another indie director, Damien Chazelle, is getting lots of attention with his directorial debut, “Whiplash.” Movies that could have made the list but didn’t: musical “Into the Woods,” “Foxcatcher” (despite its directing nom), Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken” and “A Most Violent Year,” which was completely shut out.

Actor in a Leading Role
Steve Carell, “Foxcatcher”
Bradley Cooper, “American Sniper”
Benedict Cumberbatch, “The Imitation Game”
Michael Keaton, “Birdman”
Eddie Redmayne, “The Theory of Everything”
Immediate reactions: Hello there, Bradley Cooper. “American Sniper” didn’t get much love from the Golden Globes, but the academy was in a different frame of mind. Of course, that meant there was no space for David Oyelowo, who turned in a stunning performance as Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Both Keaton and Redmayne won acting awards at the Golden Globes — one for comedy, one for drama.

Actress in a Leading Role
Marion Cotillard, “Two Days One Night”
Felicity Jones, “The Theory of Everything”
Julianne Moore, “Still Alice”
Rosamund Pike, “Gone Girl”
Reese Witherspoon, “Wild”
Immediate reaction: This list hews fairly closely to expectations. The biggest surprise is Marion Cotillard’s nomination. She edged out Jennifer Aniston, who was thought to have a shot for her buzzy performance in “Cake.” Amy Adams, who just won a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical, didn’t make the list either. Julianne Moore is the favorite here, playing a linguistics professor grappling with an early onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Actor in a Supporting Role
Robert Duvall, “The Judge”
Ethan Hawke, “Boyhood”
Edward Norton, “Birdman”
Mark Ruffalo, “Foxcatcher”
J.K. Simmons, “Whiplash”
Immediate reaction: Again, no huge jaw-droppers here. These nominees are identical to the Golden Globes, with J.K. Simmons as a favorite; he just won the Globe for his maniacal role in “Whiplash.”

Actress in a Supporting Role
Patricia Arquette, “Boyhood”
Laura Dern, “Wild”
Emma Stone, “Birdman”
Keira Knightley, “The Imitation Game”
Meryl Streep, “Into the Woods”
Immediate reaction: When Dern’s name was announced there were audible gasps — not to mention a few excited whoops. She played the effervescent mother to Reese Witherspoon’s lead in “Wild.” It was a great performance, though Patricia Arquette (who also played a single mom, in “Boyhood”) is the clear favorite.

Directing
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, “Birdman”
Richard Linklater, “Boyhood”
Bennett Miller, “Foxcatcher”
Wes Anderson, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Morten Tyldum, “The Imitation Game”
Immediate reactions: Where are the women? There was talk of not one, but two women securing nominations in this category: Ava DuVernay for “Selma” and Angelina Jolie for “Unbroken.” Jolie’s movie didn’t get the praise that seemed assured prior to release, but DuVernay certainly deserved to be on this list. Miller’s nomination for “Foxcatcher” is the biggest surprise here; meanwhile, Anderson’s nod is his first ever directing nomination. He’s been previously nominated for best screenplay.

Animated Feature Film
“Big Hero 6”
“The Boxtrolls”
“How to Train Your Dragon 2”
“Song of the Sea”
“The Tale of the Princess Kaguya”
Immediate reaction: The big surprise here is that “The LEGO Movie” wasn’t nominated. Instead of the blockbuster (“LEGO” had the fourth highest domestic box office returns in 2014), the under-the-radar, yet-to-be-released “Song of the Sea” scored a nom.

Cinematography
Emmanuel Lubezki, “Birdman”
Robert D. Yeoman, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Lukasz Zal and Ryszard Lynzewski, “Ida”
Dick Pope, “Mr. Turner”
Roger Deakins, “Unbroken”

Costume Design
Milena Canonero, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Mark Bridges, “Inherent Vice”
Colleen Atwood, “Into the Woods”
Anna B. Sheppard, “Maleficent”
Jacqueline Durran, “Mr. Turner”

Documentary Feature
“Citizenfour”
“Last Days in Vietnam”
“Virunga”
“The Salt of the Earth”
“Finding Vivian Maier”
Immediate reaction: “Citizenfour,” Laura Poitras’s thrilling documentary about Edward Snowden, was a sure bet. The academy also showed love for Rory Kennedy’s documentary about the fall of Saigon, “Last Days of Vietnam,” and the universally-praised “Virunga.” If there’s a snub to be found, it’s for “Life Itself,” the much-praised doc about Roger Ebert.

Documentary Short Subject
“Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1”
“Joanna”
“Our Curse”
“The Reaper”
“White Earth”

Film Editing
Joel Cox and Gary Roach, “American Sniper”
Sandra Adair, “Boyhood”
Barney Pilling, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
William Goldenberg, “The Imitation Game”
Tom Cross, “Whiplash”

Foreign Language Film
“Ida”
“Leviathan”
“Tangerines”
“Wild Tales”
“Timbuktu”

Makeup and Hairstyling
Bill Corso and Dennis Liddiard, “Foxcatcher”
Frances Hannon and Mark Coulier, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou and David White “Guardians of the Galaxy”

Music – Original Score
Alexandre Desplat, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Alexandre Desplat, “The Imitation Game”
Hans Zimmer, “Interstellar”
Gary Yershon, “Mr Turner”
Johann Johannsson, “The Theory of Everything”
Immediate reaction: Lots of love for the prolific Desplat, who could have been nominated for three movies (he also did great work on “Unbroken”). Johannsson won the Globe on Sunday for his work on “The Theory of Everything,” though Zimmer certainly has a shot for his impossible-to-miss music in “Interstellar.” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had a shot at making the list for “Gone Girl,” but “Mr. Turner” popped up instead.

Music – Original Song
“Everything Is Awesome” by Shawn Patterson, “The LEGO Movie”
“Glory” by Common and John Legend, “Selma”
“Grateful,” by Diana Warren, “Beyond the lights”
“I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” by Glen Campbell and Julian Raymond, “Glenn Campbell: I’ll Be Me”
“Lost Stars” by Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois, “Begin Again”
Immediate reaction: This was one of only two nominations for “Selma.” The nom for “Beyond the Lights” is a pleasant surprise. It was a great movie that far too few people saw.

Production Design
“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” Production design: Adam Stockhausen, Set Decoration: Anna Pinnock
“The Imitation Game,” Production design: Maria Djurkovic, Set Decoration: Tatiana Macdonald
“Interstellar,” Production design: Nathan Crowley, Set Decoration: Gary Fettis
“Into the Woods,” Production design: Dennis Gassner, Set Decoration: Anna Pinnock
“Mr. Turner,” Production design: Suzie Davies, Set Decoration: Charlotte Watts
Immediate reaction: “Into the Woods” was shut out of the best picture category, and Timothy Spall failed to secure a nomination for his impressive acting in “Mr. Turner,” but both movies landed here, and deservedly so.

Short Film – Animated
“The Bigger Picture,” Daisy Jacobs and Christopher Hees
“The Dam Keeper,” Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi
“Feast,” Patrick Osbirne and Kristina Reed
“Me and My Moulton,” Torill Kove
“A Single Life,” Joris Oprins

Writing – Adapted Screenplay
Graham Moore, “The Imitation Game”
Damien Chazelle, “Whiplash”
Anthony McCarten, “The Theory of Everything”
Jason Hall, “American Sniper”
Paul Thomas Anderson, “Inherent Vice”

Writing – Original Screenplay
Richard Linklater, “Boyhood”
Alejandro González Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo, “Birdman”
Wes Anderson and Hugo Guinness, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Dan Gilroy, “Nightcrawler”
E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, “Foxcatcher”

Visual Effects
“Interstellar”
“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”
“Guardians of the Galaxy”
“Captain America: Winter Soldier”
“X-Men: Days of Future Past”
Immediate reactions: This is the one category that consistently shows love for the blockbuster action and superhero movies, and this year was no exception. This was one of two nominations for “Guardians of the Galaxy,” the biggest moneymaker of 2014, which also happened to be well-liked by critics. “Transformers” had a rough week. This was the only real Oscar hope for the fourth installment of “Transformers,” and the movie led the Razzie nominations, which were announced earlier this week.

Sound Editing
“Interstellar”
“Unbroken”
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”
“American Sniper”
“Birdman”
Immediate reaction: Despite some complaints about the epic volume levels of “Interstellar,” Christopher Nolan’s movie managed to score nominations for both sound editing and sound mixing. This was the only nomination for Peter Jackson’s final (we think…?) “Hobbit” installment.

Sound Mixing
Mark Weingarten, “Interstellar”
Thomas Curley, ”Whiplash”
“Unbroken”
“American Sniper”
“Birdman”

Short Film – Live Action
“Boogaloo and Graham”
“Aya”
“Butterlamp”
“Parvenah”
“The Phone Call”

But I didn't leave the theater with anything.
No thoughts. No feelings.
Just went on with my night like it never even happened.

it was, of course, technically impressive, but the "one shot" trick got in the way of it feeling organic and real. and the dialogue was a little too on-the-nose to really hit home in a significant way.

wanted to love it, but just never really connected for me.

But historically, speaking, it's considered a snub when the a film is nominated for Best Picture and it's director isn't also nominated, since the director is the driving force behind the film.

I feel like the Color Purple was the most egregious with 11 nominations but no best director nomination.

I might break character and skip watching the Oscars this year.

Not necessarily because of Selma getting shut out (as I understand it, screeners went out late for some of the preliminary awards because the film was barely finished before its release date, so that may have affected its momentum and the Paramount marketing department couldn't play catchup) but because I'm genuinely not interested in many of these films.

Birdman, Boyhood, Whiplash, and Grand Budapest should be on any movies lovers should watch list

the others I'm with you. I don't care for either the director or topic. I mean Imitation Game is about Alan Turing who is awesome and tragic, but the film is just focusing on one period of his life and seemed like Oscar bait

I'm assuming you watched Selma from your reply

within the scope of all the Oscar bait and indie darlings that came out toward the end of the year and what those movies really left you with, sit down and rewatch Grand Budapest Hotel in the best possible setting and reflect on it. I saw Whiplash, Birdman, Foxcatcher, Imitation Game and Boyhood all in fairly quick succession and was impressed with various elements of each; then I rewatched GPH on Sunday and was blown away with how emotional, complete and gorgeous that movie is compared to the bits of each of the favorites that are supposedly so great.

Also, Michael Keaton is going to win Actor, so I don't get the inclusion of Carell over Fiennes.

http://variety.com/2015/film/news/oscar-nomination-selma-snub-diversity-1201405804/

This year’s crop of Oscar contenders reveals a stunning lack of diversity that is certain to reawaken complaints that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is tone deaf when it comes to issues of race and gender.

All of the acting categories on Thursday were dominated by white performers and no female writers or directors were included in the Oscar race. It’s the kind of monochromatic constellation that flies in the face of a moviegoing public that is becoming more multi-cultural by the day.

Oscar voters had a chance to make history by nominating the first African-American woman in the Best Director category with “Selma” helmer Ava DuVernay, but instead they opted to reward a contingent that was all-male and heavily white. Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu, rewarded for “Birdman,” was the sole instance of diversity in that category.

Moreover, “Selma” star David Oyelowo has earned raves for his work as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but he was also left off of too many ballots to make the final cut.

DuVernay seemed to take it in stride, emphasizing “Selma’s” Best Picture and Best Song nods and tweeting, “Happy Birthday, Dr. King. An Oscar gift for you. To SELMA cast + crew led by our miracle David Oyelowo! To Common + Legend! Kudos! March on!”

DuVernay wasn’t alone. Oscar voters ignored “Unbroken” director Angelina Jolie and “Citizenfour” director Laura Poitras (although the film was nominated for best documentary). In the supporting actor categories, Carmen Ejogo’s sensitive portrayal of Coretta Scott King in “Selma” was ignored, as was Miyavi’s frightening work as an abusive prison guard in “Unbroken.”

Past reports on the makeup of the Academy’s membership have exposed a disturbing level of racial and demographic homogeneity. A Los Angeles Times article from 2012, revealed that Oscar voters were 94% white, 77% male and only 14% under the age of 50.

To its credit, the Oscars have made efforts to diversify, appointing African-American Cheryl Boone Isaacs as president in 2013, for example. It has also rewarded black actors such as Forest Whitaker and Octavia Spencer in recent contests, and last year handed its top prize to “12 Years a Slave.”

But Thursday’s nominations represent a step back. Host Ellen DeGeneres kicked off last year’s Oscars telecast with a joke that read as a warning, noting that the night could end two ways.

“Possibility number one: ’12 Years a Slave’ wins best picture,” DeGeneres said. “Possibility number two: You’re all racists.”

Who’s laughing now?

Full disclosure: have not seen Selma yet; opted for Inherent Vice and Foxcatcher last weekend instead, but will likely go see it this weekend should the weather fall apart again.

But when this article points out Jolie not getting nominated for a pretty mushy and obvious film like Unbroken as something worthy of a gripe, I can't really take much of the rest of it that seriously. A gay quadriplegic alien could have directed that movie and rightyfully not been nominated for anything without mention.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/criticwire/the-sobering-statistics-behind-oscar-campaigns-20150114?utm_campaign=Indiewire&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_content=1421341489

With the Academy Award nominations just a day away, writer, producer and self-described "film data geek" Stephen Follows has crunched the numbers on the cost of an Oscar campaign, and the results are not pretty. According to Follows' research, which combines numerous published reports as well as his own off-the-record survey of four recent Best Picture nominees, the average cost of a Best Picture campaign is a whopping $10 million, with half of that going to advertising alone. By most accounts, even a successful campaign doesn't earn that money back — a Best Picture win increased a movie's box-office take on average by only $3 million, while a Golden Globe nod somehow earns more than four times that — but it's been obvious for a long time that these campaigns have more to do with Hollywood ego and bragging rights than dollars and cents.

More sobering stats:

The Oscars are incredibly predictable, and not just in their penchant for rewarding middlebrow issue movies about white men. According to statistician Iain Pardoe, once the nominees are announced, "it should be possible to predict future winners with a prediction success rate of approximately 77% for Picture, 93% for Director, 77% for Actor, and 77% for Actress."

The system by which Best Picture is awarded — a complicated process that involves sorting the ballots by first-place votes, then, if no film has more than half the vote, redistributing the ballots with the least-popular film in first according to their second-place choice — means that Best Picture is often determined by which films are ranked second and third.

The cost of sending out DVD screeners to the Academy's approximately 6,000 members — a huge factor, especially in a year where the lack of screeners has been widely blamed for "Selma's" terrible showing in the early guild nominations — can run upwards of $1 million all by itself.

Academy members have, as of 2012, a median age of 62, which means most of them are old enough to remember the events of "Selma" firsthand. Fully 86 percent were born before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed.

It just seemed like a real basic biopic to me. Important story, yes. But just a good, not great, movie.
It was Oscar bait just like The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game, and it got it's best picture nom.

But people clamoring for it to be in every category are going way to far (like the woman who played Coretta should be in the running for best supporting actress. Cmon. For what lol?)

people are conflating the importance of the historical content with the quality of filmmaking.

it's a by-the-book historical drama. i totally get the urge to big up a black female director, but the movie just isn't that exceptional.

Uh huh....

It scored 99 percent on RT and was one of the most lauded critical films...Of course Ava should have gotten a nomination for directing...And dude should have gotten that nod for best actor for playing MLK....No one is saying that Selma is the greatest movie of all time...But come on...

When a movie like American Sniper gets major nominations but has been off and on critically then it is what it is....

is it also possible that Warner Bros. ran a better Oscar campaign than Paramount did?

it's a strange ass reality that things get nominated and possible awards because they were "courted" to / for the film by its makers

i was a huge fan of the Grand Budapest Hotel, and it should at least win for wardrobe and set. but i want Wes to get the director Oscar as well.

i'm bout to go see Birdman in an hour tho, so all that might change.

This one, in particular, leaned on the design of the hotel, the heiress' home, the museum, landscape etc. to define the psuedo time-period and location of the film. Previously, there seemed to always just dismissal of his art as just indulgence on his part (although how the production quality of Darjleeing or Mr. Fox was overlooked is criminal).

BTW, highly recommend The Wes Anderson Collection from Matt Zoller Seitz; if anything, if you can find it at a good price, it makes a great coffee table book.

Other women in that film??? I like Emma stone but she basically played the angsty daddy wasn't there teen role and didn't add much nuance or Anything new to it, I think Naomi watts, the ex wife and the girlfriend had more depth and feeling to their characters and performances than stone

Even if I don't consider how well it works as a whole (it works beautifully), it has five or six scenes that, individually, destroy Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game. And I liked The Imitation Game just fine.

The scene between Jimmie Lee's grandfather and MLK at the coroner's office ALONE should make it a real Best Pic contender instead of this "happy to be nominated" bullshit.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/15/whitest-oscars_n_6466052.html

Predictions that this would be a particularly pale year sprung up after Vulture's Kyle Buchanan provided a preemptive warning for what we could expect from the "overwhelmingly white" group of males that comprises the Academy. (The hashtag #oscarssowhite blew up on Twitter following Thursday's nominations.)

And CNN's David Daniel tweeted, the lack of diversity for this year's nominees was widespread:

In response to Reply # 65

Wasn't last year like the blackest Oscars ever?

People are bringing up the old white men stat to explain why whites are the only one's represented.
But did the composition of the Academy change overnight?

I think there is a bigger issue here. And that is that there can only be one black, critically acclaimed, award winning movie each year.
And we put all our eggs in one basket and get upset when probability works against us.

We need to have more viable entrants in the running for these nominations.

75. "there are a lot of issues that affect this"
In response to Reply # 66

1. The people making movies with predominately black casts - regardless of their own ethnicities - tend to aim for producing "populist" films - comedies and melodramas that pull box office or download sales but tend to be critically derided. While there's nothing wrong with that in general, if the aim is to increase the number of potential Oscar films starring black folks, that is a problem

2. The Oscars tend towards one of three types of films: big, important dramas with slightly showy acting parts and top-notch direction & technicals (e.g. "12 Years a Slave"), intimate dramas with showier acting parts and often more innovative writing (e.g. "American Hustle", "The Social Network"), and quirky art-house films with strong stylistic direction and filmmaking (e.g. "Birdman")

There are very, very few black films that fit into categories 2 and 3. Some come close ("Dear White People" is an example of #3).

3. Making a good film isn't enough to win an Oscar or even a nomination. The big studios spend millions of dollars on Oscar campaigns - hosting screenings, sending out screeners (often with extras and "goodies"), hosting dinners, and participating in the multitude of run-up awards to the Oscars. One of "Selma"'s issues was that the film wasn't done in time to enter many of the run-ups like the PGAs: it had just been shot over the summer and was barreling its way through post-production.

Really, investment is the #1 thing needed to solve much of this: investment in better quality production (giving filmmakers time and resources to craft better product), and marketing/promo muscle to help the film get noticed and win.

It was a limited release on Dec. 25th. Now, iirc one of the criteria for an Oscar nomination is the film has to be released in both NY and LA which was satisfied by the limited release on Dec. 25th. The movie has a North American wide release date of Jan. 16th.

You asked what I thought was an honest question which I thought I gave an honest answer.

Q:American Sniper ain't been out a WEEK how the fuck did they get a nod?

A:Because of it's staggered release, it qualifies. It doesn't matter that it's only been out a WEEK in some parts of the country. As long as it was released in both NY and LA last year it meets that specific qualification.

In no way was I trying to be combative or trying to pick a fight with you.
