"is it always poor taste for a white person to say 'nigga' in the company..."

of niggas?

or is it okay if they are re-telling a story that condemns the word?

for example.

white woman at the bar talking to a black man: 'oh my god, can you believe my co-worker kept calling people nigga?! I couldn't believe it. I had to tell that bitch to stop' - *righteous smirk*

as the black person, do you take issue with this stranger at the bar?

she (seemingly) obviously understands that the word is obscene.

does she really have to repeat it?

if she really understood the word, where is her cultural sensitivity.

im sort of flabbergasted that you all are managing to blame/hate yourselves (ourselves?) for this.

im almost impressed.

like how come no one rallied behind Dionne Warwick and them when they tried to get congress to get involved in minimizing the hate speech directed towards women in our own music? Where was Jesse? Where were Al and Louis?

The debate is whether it was in poor taste though. I'd say no. She maybe could have said "sorry if I offended you" or a "pardon my expression" but she wasn't attacking anyone.

based on the content of her conversation, she understood all of the negative implications.

she's not disillusioned into thinking that it's an okay word.

but why did her understanding stop short?

i think it's a wonderful example of white people's hearts 'being in the right place', but in the end - they should probably keep a safe distance from 'the struggle'.

little or no civil rights legislation. It would have likely meant no underground railroad and it would have certainly meant no abolitionist movement.

Whether or not those things helped or hindered us as a group is another discussion for another day.

The above mentioned groups I sincerely doubt believed enslaved Africans as second class i.e. Niggers. That's why they were fighting for "Equal Rights". They didn't win a full victory, but there was SOME progress made. Enough for us both to be able to sit behind a computer and bitch and moan about it at least.

The popular slogan was "Am I not a man?" not "Am I not a nigger man?"

No one would risk their life for someone they believed was beneath or less than them. You may be confusing the mentality of those at the top (who sign laws into effect) with those at the bottom who seek the laws to be changed.

I'm glad my often used Malcolm-X quote has found a new home though.

Or I can just slap the shit out you. Your call.

Me and the fellas was at a Becky-centric club.

DJ threw on some uncut rap...think throwback dmx ie love my niggas but where's my bitches?

Whatever song it was was real popular because every white chick in the spot put her long island down & hit the floor

Now all these white girls are screaming nigga at the top of their lungs and we were literally the only niggas in there

I caught ones eye riiiiight when she hit the n in nigga and she looked at me...frowned while she thought it over...shrugged like "you will be OK"....and went right back to screaming nigga and twerking poorly

And you know...shes right - og maco

mixed company, as in, strangers, not race

one example

we're on the bus

and through the re-telling of a story

the word nigga was used abundantly

story tellers = black (young bols)

bus driver = black (ol' head)

bus driver pulls over and kicks them off the bus

even older co-worker. Some of the young(er) white women plugged in an ipod to the stereo and had a whole ratchet song playlist filled with these type of songs.

I found myself slinked into the backgroud just watching this sh*t. I was in pure amazement of how no one self edited themselves as these songs played.

I haven't warmed up to these people since...their actions have forever been stained in my head.

I think they process music differently. Not giving them a pass-- it's just you know how they love to dance to the most misogynist shit right? This seems to overlap. Like they just want to dance or some shit. Most dudes of course will fall in line with em regardless of their personal feelings if it means getting some play.

we were reading heart of darkness and it's a dense book so we read a lot of it out loud and kind of went over it (i found this very annoying).

there was this THICK little soccer chick, out-and-out white bread, and every time she came to the word "nigger" she would pause or pass it over or say "n-word," and it was brutally inconsistent/awkward.

finally the teacher is like "you can read the word, heather."

from that point on, i think she felt liberated or something because she was like "NIGGER!" with serious emphasis as she read, even where it was not warranted.

any which way, personally i avoid it but if it's a critical part of the story i will just say it. recently i told my friend, who is not black, the jordan "i don't take pictures with no niggas!" story and he got slightly offended. that was odd.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

theres a million fuckin slang words to refer to a friend without using nigga. just say "bro" like every other white person.

one of my best friends is Irish and he dropped nigga in casual conversation once and I checked him on it and he hasn't used it since. Loves reggae, has fucked black women, alladat, but nah breh, you still can't say it. It's kind of a bad look past a certain age anyway. (I can see HS kids givin each other passes, but if you like 25 tryin to say nigga? ....)

Got some flip homies that like to say "my ninja" and I just roll my eyes at that lame shit.

when I worked at a university in kentucky they had this play with a white guy, asian guy and a black guy. They were trying to break down racial stereotypes and it was obvious they were from Cali.

Black dude says the the audience after the show "I have white friends and they say nigga but I know them and it's a term of endearment"

I stood up and screamed "Oh HEEEELLLLL NOOOO!"

Also had a white coworker who moved from NC to Philly and he said it casually on his first day like it was cool. Young dude dating a Black woman. He looked like Jesus. I had to let him know that if he ever said that shit in my presence I would fuck him up...

and I also warned him that these Philly dudes will kill you... LOL.

And shit, what you gon do if you got a urkel build and some UFC lovin white dude says it around you? Check him? lol

That's why I say if you're a black man you gotta be yoked up unless you run with goons. Gotta let people know in advance that you're not about the fuck shit

9 times out of 10

There is the occasional instance of it actually demeaning someone, and few things disgust me more than meanness, but the vast majority of the time, I'd have to be dense to believe the negative reaction is anything more than a combo of opportunity/duty. Far from genuine, but I play along because its not even part of my vocabulary anyway.

Emporer has no clothes, but I can compliment the fabric. No problem.

Yall and I both know its just a cheap leverage game at this point, with the occasional golden ticket beat-up pass to boot.

Once you put your lips through the paces of saying something, even putting your mind through the paces of mentally thinking it (only time I even allow myself to mentally think it is hearing/reading the word or recalling someone else's expression), you've made it that much easier for the word to slip out around others. The fact that I HEAR the word constantly and casually (around black family/friends, music, podcasts, movies, etc) already presents enough of a danger of slipping up some day.

Side note: its extremely rare that I hear a white person say it in any context, even when talking about the word or singing a song. I know my experience is nothing more than anecdotal, but fwiw thats what it is

My girl's always trying to get me to slip up because she thinks it's funny, but she's not managed it so far.

There's no need for it to come out of anyone's mouth; white or black. It's holding the whole of society up. I pretty much give anyone who uses it the Stetson Kennedy treatment.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I'm not a child. You don't have to censor yourself when telling a story. If saying a racial epithet is essential to the story, then say it. If you are reading aloud from a book, say it. If you are singing along with a song, say it.

Just don't use it in general conversation.
I'll never use words like faggot, spic, cracker in general conversation.
But if it is necessary to use them, I will. I won't go out of my way to alter my speech and avoid them.

The whole thing is so silly.
Like the meaning is gone if you censor it. Same as those who don't want to cuss but instead say things like "darn it", "a-hole", "fudge", or "shoot".

It's like you're spelling out curse words around me like I'm a child. Either say it and deal or don't. Deal with the uncomfortable feeling because EVERYONE should be uncomfortable with it.

I'm just not down with singing along and saying it. I've always felt the need to sensor that word out of songs except for Chubbrock in Crooklyn Dodgers 2.

When I first heard him rap on that I was like "this is the lost in the storm guy?" But yeah I hate N-word too. Say it or don't say it. Don't try to water it down because you just make a mess in the end.

Intent matters...

If the non-Black person is telling a story and it involves the usage of the word nigga, then depending on the level of rapport I have with that person, I may or may not say something about it.

But, as a general rule, I prefer if no non-Black use that word in my presence and in return, I make it a point to also not use the word in their presence.

In the case of the example you have given, I would not have taken offense, unless she continued to use the word.

poor taste is a low bar nowadays

i'd give an exception to telling a story and comedians as far as taste is concerned even though she very well may have relished the free pass she gave herself

Also, so much overlap between 'we say it so can they' brigade & 'Mike Brown should've never happened but if we don't respect ourselves...'

It's like when do Black people get to partake on the "fun" parts of white womanhood like higher wages in jobs one is barely/under-qualified for & less murderous/heinous violence from the police/state just to name a couple.
