In response to Reply # 0

my first trip to Buffalo was a stop on a road trip to Toronto. We stopped at the Anchor Bar, where buffalo wings were invented, and loved the wings. My wife told a friend of hers who was FROM Buffalo that we loved Anchor Bar, and she said you gotta eat Duffs. All the loacals eat Duffs. Anchor is for tourists, but Duffs is the real deal. Next time we went to Toronto, we stopped at Duffs. It was basic, any sports bar in America wings.

I'm well traveled, and a huge cheesesteak connoisseur and Philly cheesesteak is the most disappointing thing I've ever experienced in my life. All that fucking hype for pretty much my whole life and the guy hands me a roll with fucking glorified Steak-Umms and Cheez Whiz. It's literally the worst steak and cheese I've ever eaten. How that city became famous for that trash is beyond me.

This happened 7 years ago now and still the memory makes me fuming mad.

I've never had a cheesesteak that didn't have American cheese on it, and have never had one with Cheez Whiz. Also, you have to build your own sandwich (pick your toppings). If you just ask for "a cheesesteak" then all you'll get usually is meat and cheese.

With that said, I do think that there's so much untapped potential in this sandwich format, and these restaurants here aren't chopping and screwing the recipe enough.

and its not your fault, but it pisses me off that Pat's and Geno's are recognized at the 'real' cheesesteaks. they're the worst spots in the city, and someone must have sold their soul to the devil to get them as much press and publicity as they do.

Think I went to Pat's. Maybe Geno's. Either way, one of the "big name" ones and maybe that's the issue here. I just assumed the biggest names were big for a reason, like most do I'm sure.

But yea - I'm from Boston and I've had about 50 better s&c's than the one I got in Philly. I was appalled.

I don't know when I'll be back to Philly but please, any recommendations for better places to go next time I'm there are welcomed. I was serious when I said it was just about the most disappointing experience of my life, relative to the differential between my pre-consumption level of excitement and my post-consumption level of letdown.

and its not your fault, but it pisses me off that Pat's and Geno's are recognized at the 'real' cheesesteaks. they're the worst spots in the city, and someone must have sold their soul to the devil to get them as much press and publicity as they do.

>Philly Cheesteaks = top 20 food invention list.

They may have invented it but other places perfected the craft.

Again, I'm only judging by one of the big two (Pat's/Geno's) that I had and I'm gathering that I need to dig deeper next time I'm there to get a true indication of what a Philly cheesesteak should be. But just because they invented doesn't mean it's still good. I can name 100 places in Boston that make a better one and other places across the country.

But again, I will be digging deeper next time I'm there and will report back.

The reason they are a staple in Philly

is because they are open 24/7

not because of quality

That intersection comes to a standstill after 2AM

having said that

many a drunken night was capped with a cheesesteak from Pat's

and my memory tells me it was delicious.

you gotta recognize Ben's for what it is - a greasy spoon.

It's become sorta fashionable for even people in DC to start shitting on Ben's given the rise of bougie foodieism over the past 6-7 years.

On that scale, no it's not great. It's not life changing. Nothing on the menu will give you an orgasm.

But on the greasy spoon scale, it's still a good spot. Not great, but good.

I just always tell people, don't go there for the chili. That's not bowl-eating chili. Ben's chili is put-on-top-of-something type chili.

i happen to dig Sbarro pizza well enough. it ain't the best but it ain't the worst either. the worst NY style pizza in NYC is not as good as Sbarro. IMO. w/o even having tried it i know this to be true. of course, the best NY style pizza in NYC is undoubtedly far superior to Sbarro pizza. i'm sure of that w/o trying it.

Late 90's. They misjudged their market something awful. I had heard how legendary they were and thought I would give it a try. The food was a step below what I can get on every corner in the ATL...at triple the price! I don't think they lasted a year.

thankfully i'm not into white bread as a general matter. and since SF is all whole-wheat everything i can usually get bread w/o having to deal w/sourdough. but when i do that shit is annoying. it's not better than other white breads - it's actually a little worse, IMO.

They're not horrible, but far from the best burger ever. They're cheap, though. So, they're decent in a pinch. I'd much rather have Braums or Whataburger, though.

I was headed to Coney Island to ride that rickety-ass cyclone and wander the boardwalk one summer day, so he insisted I try a Nathans hot dog. I never tried one (wasn't eating meat by then), but they looked like regular sidewalk vendor dogs to me when I looked in the store.

At Sunny's, always got to let them know to fry the wings hard, with wedges, salt pepper ketchup and hot sauce on the chicken. Sunnys is clutch all the time to me...

Stokos, for me, is I've been drinking and I need some food and this late night spot is open. Don't have to specify to fry the chicken hard, and their fries are cool but they dont' have wedges.

Both are great boxes to me for different reasons.

Either way, I'd smash both if you put them in front of me.

But when I have to choose one...I go for Sunny because it's not as available as Stokos.

This is pretty much my feeling on it. I can make it better at home if I really had that craving. I must admit, I haven't eaten it in years, but I do remember that shit being hella disappointing. And the sides....ugh.

If anything when it comes to decent spanish food in Bushwick you can hit Sabor Toribio too, and like I said Carrizal, or Kalina a little farther down Broadway.

The Patacon sandwich at Savoy cafe (geared towards incoming hipsters but Spanish-owned) is the shit

Chimu Peruvian food is really good

As far as Mexican I recommend Tres Espigas.

Dry rub in Memphis, sweet tomato based in KC, vinegar in NC, white sauce in AL, all beef everything in TX. Everybody will fight to the death on their preference too

A dislike for pulled pork could come from that. A lot of places will prep the shoulder without a lot of seasonings, relying on the sauce of choice. Depending on where you go, the pork can be drowned in spicy vinegar or sweet BBQ sauce, which may or may not be to your liking. I usually inject and season mine do the pork tastes great without anything on it, but it works with whatever sauce you prefer (I like a sweet/spicy vinegar sauce I make, while my wife likes KC Masterpiece style sauce)

Phoenix had the best burritos, carne asada, and tacos hands down. San Fran didn't disappoint either.

HELLZ THE FUCK NO.

i have been on a mission to eat the 25 best tacos in Chicago as rated by a local magazine and my experience has highlighted exactly what's wrong w/Chicago Mexican food. basically it's brutal in its focus on meat and lack of spice and fresh veggies. i had a taco from one of the joints rated 'best' - it was literally just a half pound of carnitas on a corn tortilla. like, that was it. and the carnitas wasn't particularly well-seasoned. it was just meat and a damned tortilla. that's supposed to be some of the best? and yes, the joint is in Pilsen and nobody in there speaks English and it was full of ppl stuffing their faces. i had another taco from one of the best joints in Pilsen (allegedly)...i also had to have a homie order in Spanish b/c no one spoke Ingles. the taco was a fucking chicken leg on a corn tortilla. a WHOLE CHICKEN LEG ON A TORTILLA is a one of the best tacos Chicago Mexicans have to offer.

GTEFOHWTBS.

Tex Mex > Chicago Mex

Cali Mex > Chicago Mex

fuck you.

i don't give a shit for authenticity. i'm not here to prove anything. i've had Mexican food that's allegedly as good as my Mexican homie's abuela's cooking and it was bland and boring and not relevant to my interests.

i'm in this for good food not brownie points proving how 'down' i am w/the locals or how much i hate whitey. fuck that.

fuck you.

I still haven't been to the Italian places in the North End of Boston, but I've had multiple people tell me it's the best Italian food in North America. Specifically- Giacomo's. I wonder if anyone in this post has been.

Do you mean "standard red sauce" by NYC little italy standards, or just generic italian american food?

been to the west coast three times, San Diego, LA, and Vegas. All three had the worst Mexican food I ever ate in my life.
The meal I had in San Diego was inedible. I was appalled in LA, and Vegas was a nice try, but no. I'm done.

In and Out was gross. Fat burger was the bomb though.
