"Outside of Blackish...how many black couples are on TV?"

That Mindy Kaling thread has me wondering. How many times do you see black people on TV and they have a fully fleshed out significant other who is also black?

We can include other minorities, but lets be honest for a second...Asian men are not allowed to date on western TV.

I think BET or TVone might have some Original programming, but you'll have to enlighten me. Every black person I can think of on Network is dating a white person. Same goes for cable.

the reason why many of these show are only found on these other networks is because of the dispersion and branching out of audiences due to the availability of cable and sub-channel networks.

It's not 1990 anymore. Broadcast TV isn't the 800-pound gorilla it used to be. That's why they're in such a hurry nowadays to cancel anything that only does OK and doesn't become an instant hit. A lot of these programs that would never make it on ABC, NBC, CBS, or FOX can make it on cable, and earn ratings that are good enough for cable but would have them canceled in a second on broadcast. That's a lot better of an outcome than waiting around for crumbs to be thrown from corporations already worried about shrinking audiences and a need to reach the biggest audiences possible in every programming block.

Cable TV counts. Now, Netflix, Amazon and Hulu are starting to count. If they're good enough for Emmy nominations, they're good enough for this topic.

that's like saying Bollywood and the Korean TV on my Apple TV is proof there are Asian couples and Indian couples being represented on TV.

I have no idea if their is a Bollywood app on Apple TV but I know with the highest cable subscriptions can get you damn near any TV station in the world.

and many of them tend to be shot without studio audiences, so their total shooting times are shorter, and everyone involved can go do something else the rest of the year.

I still watch Grey's but I can't stand her character. Never could. Nearly every other character has something redeeming about them that would allow me to root for them at one point.

But not her. She's horrible.

Assuming we're excluding "black shows", there aren't a lot of black leads, and we can't expect spouses of secondary characters to be fully fleshed-out.

>We can include other minorities, but lets be honest for a

If an Asian man is portrayed as a sexual creature, 9 times out of 10, he's portrayed as a perv.

>on Network is dating a white person. Same goes for cable.

I don't watch enough network TV to speak on this.

a black couple was arguably the emotional center of Walking Dead this season, and Fox just debuted Empire.

and that was back when cable was still rapidly growing, and before many of those networks were able to sustain professional quality original programming.

The dad was a big pussy and the mom was angry within the first 2 minutes over almost every episode. I didn't hate the show but the angry mom killed the vibe.

It could be done but just let black people be black people.

stupid reality shows: they're cheaper to produce, quicker to produce, there's no credited WGA writers to pay (generally speaking), there's clearly next to no standard of morality, and yet people still watch them.

Yeah I'm all for Asians and Latinos getting some spotlight. Like I said to start out, no one on TV is more undermined than Asian men.

That being said, I don't understand the logic of, "Well we had the Cosby show, so we're good for a while."

I want to live in a world where I can choose from black shows that run the gamut from HBO quality right down to Public Access.

I was just referring to how a few people have brought up the past as if that placates the present concerns.

I didn't mean that you were literally suggesting that black people stop for a while so Asians can have a turn.

a Canadian cable show where Andra Fuller (now of "Rommieloverfriends" and "Black Jesus") played Kaldrick King, essentially a roman-a-clef of DMX who was also a closeted gay man.

Kaldrick had two relationships with men (and one with a woman) over the course of the show. All persons involved were black or mixed.

but, at the same time, one of the best reviewed.

The show was poorly promoted (it was a show about 20-somethings struggling to "make it" - Kaldrick, who is clearly not in his 20s and may not even be in his 30s, came into the picture because he was the boyfriend of one of the 20-somethings who was a main character. The CW couldn't find a way to promote the show w/o making it sound cliche)

There is a Cuban-American on it, though. But no blackness for miles.

there was a random one at the end of Amazon's Mozart in the Jungle. Random in the sense that the character who was gay's only lines the whole show were in the last episode to his black boo saying thanks before a kiss. Kinda irked me in the, why wasn't this a storyline prior, but maybe they'll build on it if they get a second season.

I know she's Cuban but...

She's actually dated a couple but her current man works for the firm so he's become a minor character on the show. He was on there all last season and should return unless they randomly decide to fire him.

My teenage brain made me sit through a shitty sci-fi show because of Gina Torres and then a shitty Bruce Campbell show for that British chick with the huge boobs.

Man what happened to Saturday action TV?
