"When did airfare to Europe hit Asia prices?"

Over $1000 RT for major Western European destinations. I haven't left the Americas in a minute, but I swear some of these $1200 routes were like $650 just a couple years ago.

i checked from omaha and it was the same sitch 12-1300. i checked nyc to central europe and i can find $750ish which is about what it was the last time i went. if i go, i'll buy a ticket to new york, fly into newark or laguardia and take a flight out of jfk after a day or two.

there are two issues with omaha. there are no good cheap routes from omaha to jfk (THE international airport) - so you're essentially buying two tickets. 1. a nyc to chicago AND 2. a chicago to nyc ticket for $4-500. i think the tickets max out 3-4 stops so you're missing ALL the good cheap tickets where you fly into istanbul and back to central europe.

I wouldn't do it to save $100 but a few hundred sure. Istanbul to Central Europe or Paris is only 1-2 hours.

I'm also looking at JFK and IAD, and tickets aren't demonstrably cheaper. As a matter of fact, I priced nonstop PIT to CDG and JFK to CDG in May, and there's a $40 difference. Both fares are roughly $1100.

I still remember periodic sales to London for like 300 rt.

He'll I flew ANA to japan then thailand in 04 for 800 rt. I think in the mid 200s gas prices went up and so did flight prices.

It was gas prices that caused the raise in prices. That doesn't mean they feel the need to give back the money though. There are probably fewer airlines and less competition then there was nearly 20 yrs ago in 1998. Or 10-15 yrs ago in the 2000s.

I've only been to Europe in the spring or summer. I've never paid more than $800.

I'm also following air fares for Madrid and Barcelona for early July and bo of those are going to be 1200-1400. I can get to Seoul for that money. These routes used to cost half of what Asian flights used to cost.

I was flying to Europe for $800 - $900 range even less
Or maybe I've just become more fiscally conservative

That and the glorious days of the high riding recession-proof Canadian dollar is now over.

Either way I'm having a harder time pulling the trigger on a Euro trips these days.

And also become tighter to hubs, like if you're going to Europe from NYC or Asia from LAX/SFO, the selection is wider and chances of a good price are better.

I don't try to make sense of airfares anymore. Just guess and check.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I was just looking at tickets the other day. There were a good amoumt of flights at that price (the lowest I saw was $550) it just depends on when you go.

Unfortunately my bday is in June when
prices seem to be the highest, but you can definitely find a $650 flight to london from jfk. I just use Google flights and click the calender so that I can see the prices for the entire month. Sometimes it's a lil off, but that's to be expected.
