"boko haram kills as many as 2000 "

so there are elections coming up, and this whole thing seems to be politically kind of a non issue... ?
or just another tallking point, like- jobs, oil subsidies, energy reform, pyschopathic militants slaughtering thousands and building a separate state within the country, town by town

but maybe i got it wrong?

,,,,,,,,,
Hundreds of bodies – too many to count – remain strewn in the bush in Nigeria from an Islamic extremist attack that Amnesty International described as the “deadliest massacre” in the history of Boko Haram.

Fighting continued on Friday around Baga, a town on the border with Chad where insurgents seized a key military base on 3 January and attacked again on Wednesday.

“Security forces have responded rapidly, and have deployed significant military assets and conducted air strikes against militant targets,” said a government spokesman.

District head Baba Abba Hassan said most victims are children, women and elderly people who could not run fast enough when insurgents drove into Baga, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles on town residents.

“The human carnage perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists in Baga was enormous,” Muhammad Abba Gava, a spokesman for poorly armed civilians in a defence group that fights Boko Haram, told the Associated Press.

He said the civilian fighters gave up on trying to count all the bodies. “No one could attend to the corpses and even the seriously injured ones who may have died by now,” Gava said.

An Amnesty International statement said there are reports the town was razed and as many as 2,000 people killed.

If true, “this marks a disturbing and bloody escalation of Boko Haram’s ongoing onslaught,” said Daniel Eyre, Nigeria researcher for Amnesty International.

The previous bloodiest day in the uprising involved soldiers gunning down unarmed detainees freed in a 14 March 2014 attack on Giwa military barracks in Maiduguri city. Amnesty said then that satellite imagery indicated more than 600 people were killed that day.

The attacks come five weeks away from presidential elections which are likely to trigger even more bloodshed. Already under a state of emergency, the three north-eastern states worst hit by Boko Haram asked the central government for more troops earlier this week. The government has said voting will take place across Borno state although the worsening insecurity means few international observers are likely to get clearance to oversee voting in an area that is traditionally opposition-supporting.

Around 1.5 million people have been displaced by the violence, many of whom will not be able to vote in the polls under Nigeria’s current electoral laws.

Boko Haram also appears to be regionalising the conflict, after threatening neighbouring Cameroon in a video earlier this week.

The government has made no official comment on the alleged massacres. President Goodluck Jonathan skimmed security issues when he relaunched his re-election bid in front of thousands of cheering supporters in the economic capital, Lagos, on Thursday.

The five-year insurgency killed more than 10,000 people last year alone, according to the Washington-based Council on Foreign Relations. More than a million people are displaced inside Nigeria and hundreds of thousands have fled across its borders into Chad and Cameroon.

Emergency workers said this week they are having a hard time coping with scores of children separated from their parents in the chaos of Boko Haram’s increasingly frequent and deadly attack

Not that I think its irrelevant but just wondering where you think it should fit.

For me its a huge international issue which an international coalition should be addressing. The US should definitely be a part of that coalition but I don't think it should be in the lead in which case the only talking point for our politicians should be there willingness to support solutions that the international community is working on.

i was watching a pbs report on the situation and it was kind of frightening, but not really sure if that wasn't by design. it seems now like political intervention is not going to be the way to come to a resolution so i wonder how any politician would purport to be able to do something about it.

pres of cameroon reached out to intl community for help securing the border

but without govt taking the initiative, the situation just festers into what we see today

actually mercenaries taking out the leadership is probably not even a bad idea at this point, but would still need govt ok

can a candidate come up and say 'if i'm elected i will rid our nation of haram?' and have people believe it? if they did there'd have to be some at all costs involved in which case you gotta fear they become just as bad. that's what i saw in the report i watched, that the military had deputized local folk, but at the end of the day both the military and the communities given so much power abused it and perhaps made the situation worse.

so i question what trust folk could have in a politician saying they are going to handle it. the only way that seems realistic is if they say they've already secured the international alliance that's going to tackle the issue from a collective approach.

>actually mercenaries taking out the leadership is probably not
>even a bad idea at this point, but would still need govt ok

can they even identify and locate the leaders though. seems like the biggest struggle they've had is actually tracking them down.

Fro hearing how my family members from Naija are talking it seems to be the whisper in certain regions of the country.

Boko Haram have been able to get away with so much bloodshed because of the ineptitude of the Nigerian government and the military. Its a tragic waste of life and it will spread all over west Africa if its not contained and demolished as soon as possible.

Maiduguri (Nigeria) (AFP) - Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan paid a surprise visit Thursday to the heartland of the Boko Haram movement after satellite pictures showed massive destruction in two northern towns razed by the Islamist fighters.

Jonathan spent three hours in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, meeting with survivors of what is thought to be the worst attack in Boko Haram's six-year insurgency.

On a visit to a camp sheltering about 5,000 people who fled the January 3 attack on Baga in northern Borno, he said his security chiefs had promised "all the areas under the control of Boko Haram will soon be recaptured".

"I want to assure you that you will soon go back to your houses," Jonathan, who is seeking a second term in elections next month, told some of the displaced.

The attack on Baga, part of an upsurge in violence ahead of February's presidential and parliamentary polls, is feared to have killed hundreds, if not more.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch published separate satellite images Thursday that appeared to show massive destruction in both Baga and the adjacent town of Doron Baga, which is home to a regional military base.

Amnesty's images showed aerial shots of the towns on January 2 -- the day before the attack -- and January 7.

The group said the images suggested "devastation of catastrophic proportions", with more than 3,700 structures, mostly in Doron Baga, damaged or completely destroyed.

HRW said 11 percent of Baga and 57 percent of Doron Baga was flattened, most likely by fire.

HRW said the exact death toll was unknown and quoted one local resident as saying: "No one stayed back to count the bodies.

ummm
how bout pay consultants from europe to study the problem 2 more years, then offer suggestions

http://news.yahoo.com/west-africa-leaders-mulling-regional-force-fight-boko-151842876.html

ACCRA (Reuters) - West African leaders are considering creating a military force to fight Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist militants and will hold a regional summit next week to discuss the issue, Ghana's President John Mahama said on Friday.

Regional bloc ECOWAS will seek the support of the African Union (AU) for its plans, said Mahama.

"Nigeria is taking military action and Cameroon is fighting Boko Haram, but I think we are increasingly getting to the point where probably a regional or a multinational force is coming into consideration," Mahama, who currently chairs ECOWAS, told a news conference.

"It is what we want to discuss at the AU because, if that must happen, there must be a mandate to allow such a force to operate," he said.
